I believe Rob Lowe's problem was that he was told that Sam would be star (hence that shoe-horned in plot about the call-girl in the pilot) and it then became clear that Josh and Bartlet kinda stole the show.

And then CJ. And Toby. It was just an amazing ensemble cast. I can't pick a "favorite." On rewatching, there's an episode where Toby says he and Sam are the Batman and Robin of speechwriting. And of course, Sam is Robin. I wonder how much that got under his Rob Lowe's skin.

Had some tech issues ... there was no link to Watch on YouTube like there usually is. I click through, add the video to Watch Later, then I have you guys on the TV with Max playing the episode on my laptop. Sound on your video seemed low, but that could be something on my end. I made it work but thought you'd want to know.

I usually have the same issue with the sound and use the YouTube link for louder audio also.

Every time I see Joanna Gleason i think - Monty Hall's kid! :) Originally airing on October 2, 2002, 'College Kids' is Episode 3 of Season 4 of The West Wing. It is the 69th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.9, placing it as the #13 ranked episode of this season and #60 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I didn't realize he had that kind of ego. I mean he is a huge celebrity so he obviously has one. Just a shame that he leaves something so great and so important.

According to what I can find, Lowe was signed at double the salary of most of the ensemble. And then they insisted on a raise to the same amount and he insisted that his salary also needed to go up so he was still being paid more than the others and the studio said they couldn't afford that. [https://ew.com/article/2002/08/09/what-really-made-rob-lowe-quit-west-wing/] He's also complained about feeling 'undervalued' because he had less to do later on than in season 1 but, as we've said, that's because this is more of an ensemble show. A lot of international law hasn't been written for the simple reason that when you're the strongest player in a game, you don't want the rules to be changed. And guess who has veto powers... My country has been (weakly) spearheading changes to international law, but it quickly turns into problems. We made changes to our judicial system where it allowed for people to sue governments for crimes against humanity (A term that needed to be invented for the acts of terror of our King Leopold II in Congo Free State) and genocide (again because we were an important factor in the Rwandan genocide). And quickly it became a major diplomatic problem when Kurdish freedom fighters/terrorists (depending on your position) started suing Turkey. Then Armenians sued Turkey for the Armenian genocide. Quickly it spiraled into a problem because Turkey is such an important NATO member for tactical reasons in the Middle East. And when the US was sued in our country for war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, they had to turn back the naive law changes they introduced. The world isn't fair and never will be.

I think of her as The Baker’s wife from Into the Woods.

Whenever I read the name of this episode I have to say it out loud like they did in Tucker and Dale vs Evil (if you've seen it).

Le-oh No You Didn't made me laugh while taking a drink...well played.

Allison Janney on re-watching this and discussing it on the podcast: "Wow, I must have REALLY been feeling comfortable with my body to wear that shirt at the concert. Probably did a ton of arm exercises that week."

Funny coincidence: I'm just procrastinating about studying for an international law exam that I'm going to write tomorrow. In this episode of all places, Article 51 of the UN Charter is mentioned. And as President Bartlet and the lawyer talk about it, I think, wait a minute, there's nothing in Article 51 of the UN Charter about "waging war" or "a war must be declared." So I looked in my law book in front of me, and I was right. It's interesting that a show that's usually researched so closely, makes a mistake on what's probably the most famous article in the UN Charter. Especially because the discussion that President Bartlet and the lawyer had would have worked with the correct wording of the law. But anyway, I feel better prepared for my exam because I can tell myself that I know more about international law than the American president and an expert in international law.

I was a freshman at UCLA on the first week of school, and a bus rolled up to the dorms during orientation week and said "who wants to be on The West Wing?" Sorkin was late on scripts and they didnt know they were going to shoot that Rock the Vote concert until the very last minute... they didn't have background actors booked for the day and decided to try and round up real college students... and so lil 18 year old me and a few other idiot theater majors got to be concert-goers on my favorite show. Got to meet Allison and the Barenaked Ladies. I genuinely thought that's how things worked in LA. (I was wrong.)

You lucky SOB! Yeah, LA doesn't work that way but still! A close family friend of mine in Pittsburgh, grew up wrestling his whole life. When they shot the film Foxcatcher in Pittsburgh, he went down to be an extra. They had him fill out all kinds of information and he told them that he grew up wrestling and was very good. Next thing he knew, they took him into the dressing rooms and had him fitted and cut his hair. He met Channing Tatum and one of the scenes fades out on his face! To this day it's still crazy to me. You never know what opportunities you can get being an extra, that will last forever!

The Inedible Mattman!

I always thought a good "gang name" for Leo would be The Zoot Suit. I mean, that man wears the NICEST SUITS on the planet lol

Bare Naked Ladies only had one album that chartered in the US, but they had multiple big hits in Canada. It was fun, as a Canadian, to see them have that kind of success in the US after so many years.
