Michael's Gambit. OH MY GOD!

Comments

Andrew Hansen

Ugh the moment we've all been waiting for and you have to pick the worst time of day. I have to wait like at least an hour til I get home from work to watch this. An hour later I could just down and watch it at home. An hour earlier I could watch it at work, but I'm stuck doing end of day stuff and catching a bus home and just wanting to watch this

Sydney Frasure

I’ve been so excited for this day! I just got out of surgery and I’m going to watch it the minute I get home!!!

Sydney Frasure

And now you know why we’ve all been so crazy about every single thing you’ve ever said! Lol

D Gyre

IT"S HERE!!!!!! HUZZZAAAHH!! We have been waiting for this moment...

N

the mother of plot twist

Roland Cooke

"My head's exploding right now."

Roland Cooke

A quick note to everyone that posted rot13 code, I recommend going back and marking it in plain text if it contains spoilers for episodes beyond S1.

Roland Cooke

"The hints were there..." You mean the huge one in S1E1? ;)

Actuarial Lurker

So now you know that the Good Place isn't so good after all....

Tyler Mckenzie

Fun fact: There is a video on youtube of the cast finding out the twist for the first time. They didn't know ahead of time that this was the bad place.

Roland Cooke

I never thought you guys were dumb, not once. In fact I thought you picked up several hints that _something_ was off way faster than most folks. I think the reason that people were so good with helping you avoid spoilers (including the length of the season!) is that we wanted you to get the same joy from the surprise that we all did. To me, the second biggest surprise of the show is just how well the creators manage S2 and beyond, after a stunning finale like that.

Taylor

I literally haven’t been commenting on this show because I was so worried about possibly slipping up! Also, Ted Danson and Kristen Bell were the only two who knew the twist going in. There is a video of Mike Schur explaining it to the others on set. They spent most of the first season thinking their characters were in the good place.

b

the best part of doing a rewatch is clocking that in EPISODE ONE Eleanor says her parents are probably in the Bad Place "being used to torture each other" because "it would work" !!

N

fun fact: if you rewatch the first season we never see Michael alone on screen all his scenes are with one of the humans until this episode which confirms that he was plotting from the start

N

also Michael kicks a dog into the sun lol

Pam Nail

You HAVE to see this video of the cast finding out about the twist (except Ted and Kristen, who already knew) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Bhyin0HaLU. I'm always amazed when reactors get to this point unspoiled because at the time there were gifs of Kristen Bell's "THIS is the Bad Place" EVERYWHERE. Two things this episode brings out that I love: - It completely upends the stakes. We start the episode thinking there are some people on their side. With this reveal, we realize there's NO ONE on their side. - It takes emotional and psychological pain seriously, treating it as equal to physical pain and a comparable form of torture.

Andrew Hansen

I was laughing most of my coded messages was lol, jk. You ain't seen nothing yet. Its arguable this isn't even the biggest WTF moment. I was really tempted to ask "what does none of them belonging in the good place tell you?" but resisted the urge to do so. This may be controversial, but this was the season finale. Just imagine having to go all that time without knowing what happens next. I had it "spoiled for me," because I wasn't watching it and my mom after the finale said "you gotta come see this" and that's what got me hooked into the show. I did that to a couple other people who watched the first episodes and said it was boring, and after they convinced me that they were never going to watch more of it, i showed them the twist to get them to reconsider. I will respect others wishes not to say how many episodes there are moving forward. You talked about possibly doing a special longer review and reaction to things, thats why I'm saying that this was the finale. Also, when you play next episode it'll say season 2 so its not really a spoiler. Michael and Eleanor were the only ones in on it, and there's a video of them finding out the twist that's worth a reaction to. Also season 1 bloopers. I had eagerly anticipated your reaction to "The Good Place" all day. It was indeed worth the wait. Now, I am looking forward to the release of this week's episode of "Resident Aliens.

Roland Cooke

Indeed, it's right there around the 17.30 mark, if my maths is correct, when Chidi helps Eleanor to bed, and she apologises to him (something she had probably never done to anyone before). Per Wikipedia, Michael Schur took the core inspiration from Jean-Paul Sartre's stage play No Exit, where three strangers die and are escorted to a single room by a friendly bellhop and informed they must co-exist. They ultimately determine they are entirely incompatible and reach the conclusion that "hell is other people".

Kimba

That was awesome. Thanks so much everyone for not spoiling it, and thanks to the guys for your reaction. You made my day!

Maria Stoycheva

well, boys, welcome to the show :D your reactions were priceless - thank you for that! and also, I agree that the Patrons did an amazing job keeping this particular spoiler safe. plenty more to come ;)

Phillip Grischa

I remember I thought something wasn't right but I thought the twist was that every soul mate couple had one person who didn't belong there and that everyone kept it a secret from everyone else. I had no idea why and how that would make sense but the thought crossed my mind.

DelGuy03

1. Yes, this was the season finale. (Personally I see no reason to treat length of seasons as a "secret" when it was never a secret to NBC viewers, but whatever. Mike Schur had it in his contract that the network could not ask him to add additional episodes to any season; he had it all plotted out very precisely.) 2. This is indeed one of the biggest twists (THE biggest?) in TV history. Rest assured there'll be loads more surprises and twists, but this one, hiding the very premise of the series for a whole season, is in a class by itself. I'm sure all your viewers, like me, can let out a big breath now that you've seen this episode without being spoiled. 3. You guys love to predict, on every show you watch. Well, knock yourselves out. :) 4. You'll notice that this next time around, Michael is leaning into Eleanor's "hot shirtless mailman" kink that we've already learned about. Luke Golden, who plays Chris Baker, has been a competitive bodybuilder as well as an actor.

Maria Stoycheva

@Joe and Kevin: please keep in mind that some of the rot13.com comments do contain spoilers beyond this episode. if you'd like us to reveal the parts that are now "safe" for you to read, let us know - I am sure we will be happy to :)

DelGuy03

On the question of "did I guess in advance": No, not until Eleanor had her big wide-eyed reaction, about a minute before we were told. Then I started thinking ahead and getting an inkling. Also, I had a moment a couple of episodes earlier, when the subject of "corrupt motivations" was central to the story, and I started wondering "What about Tehani then?" I had figured her good works were enough to give her the numbers to get her into the Good Place, but if motivations matter, then she was questionable. But then (ha!) I just put that aside, figuring that (if it wasn't just a mistake by the writers) it would be explained somehow. So I was as surprised as anyone.

The moment is finally here! I'm so glad you weren't spoiled. This is probably my all-time favorite plot twist in TV, although Mr. Robot has quite a few doozies (highly recommend that show, by the way). You already touched on a lot of the big clues, such as Chidi and Tahani being of dubious moral character, the frozen yogurt dominance, Real Eleanor's fuzzy motivations, all the moments of misery, and so on. But my favorite thing about the construction of this first season is the way that it uses audience expectations of the genre to help mask a lot of the most obvious setup. It's a sitcom, so when Michael "obliviously" says or does something which worsens one of the four humans' anxieties in a very on-the-nose way, the audience writes it off as exaggeration for the sake of a comedic beat. It's such a mind-blowing season to re-watch, because you catch so much stuff which was hidden in plain sight.

DelGuy03

By the way, the show from which I know the "Mindy" actress is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend -- Darryl and she got together at the end of the show.

Kelsey Krehbiel

I am so excited you guys finally got here! This is my favorite twist in TV because when you go watch again with this in mind, there are SO many signs! Really big ones! Dude, Michael KICKED A PUPPY INTO THE SUN. He kicked a puppy--that's like the evil stereotype!

Jason

This episode is the reason why I subscribed today. I couldn't wait. I cant wait for you guys to get through the rest of the series

Jenna Jaggers

I'm so happy we were able to gaslight you successfully (sorry about that, but you deserved the best shock)! It's crazy going back and rewatching knowing the truth, there's so many little things to pick up on. Please trust the show, it's pretty great from beginning to end!

James Jones

So much fun. And, yes, the hints were there. But they were all explained by Jason and Eleanor, and Michael being brand new at this job.

Jeff

I've been waiting thirteen weeks for this moment, and the payoff didn't disappoint! I'm so amazed that none of us spoiled it for you. Watching your faces during this was one of the high points of my week, or month, or maybe year. I would say that the only other "show-altering twist" in tv history was the finale of the ninth season of "Dallas", when the deceased Bobby Ewing showed up in his wife's shower, and it was revealed that the entire season had been her dream. But like you said, that wasn't planned ahead, and it was just a lazy way to get Patrick Duffy back onto the show. (I was the only person in the world who liked it, because no other traditional, mainstream shows were attempting anything so "out-of-the-box.") Anyway, thanks to Joe and Kevin and to all the patrons for making this such a fun group experience!

tarrsk

I'm not going to lie, I joined the Patreon specifically because I saw that you guys were about to hit this episode. It's maybe my favorite TV plot twist of all time, and I'm SO glad you weren't spoiled for it. And the best part is, it *all holds up on rewatch.* If anything, it makes rewatching all the more sweet because all the signs were there, they just did such a masterful job of hiding the ball that almost nobody I've ever watched the show with figures it out. They even play to our presuppositions about sitcom tropes to include things that, which considered dispassionately, flat out don't make sense or seem completely out of character (like Michael kicking the puppy into the Sun), and our brains just slide right on by because *that's the kind of silliness that sitcoms pull all the time.* It's absolutely brilliant plotting. And in a show already this rich with character and theme and philosophical inquiry (not to mention the JOKES, holy god), the fact that they then deliver this absolute piledriver of a twist instantly elevates this show into one of the best TV series of all time, in my humble opinion.

tarrsk

Kristen Bell did too - she's actually the one holding the camera in that video. :)

Rachel Thomas

I HAVE BEEN WAITING! I'm so glad you all were surprised. This twist is so wonderful and I'm glad we all managed to keep it a surprise for you all

Andrew Hansen

This is not my original thought but I saw other people comment on other reaction explain what made this work. We saw everything through Eleanor's eyes and she was convinced he was a real good place architect, and that the problems were caused by her not belonging there so we never had reason to question that

D Gyre

I do want to post again just to say you all are definitely NOT stupid or dumb. We did have to sit on our hands and zip our lips when you made certain comments, and the fact you caught on to those other two didn't really belong in the good place either, no you guys did a great job of picking up on the hints, the show just does a better job of making them not point to the actual truth. You guys are absolutely not dumb and for myself no laughter at your expense! I really recommend just binging the 1st season again before you dive into the 2nd season, with the finale fresh in your mind.

nj

i know! i had dinner plans after work with a friend i haven't seen for months, and i saw the notification on my way out of my office. i was so bummed i couldn't go straight home to watch! not that i didn't enjoy seeing my friend, but i also wasn't too upset when she wanted to call it early.

nj

yup. most of us were equally hornswoggled on our first watch.

Taylor

Season 2 episode 2 is on my top tier list of favorite television episode.

D Gyre

Absolutely. I did not see it coming. It such an incredible twist.

Brian Harris

This was such an entertaining reaction. I’m always stunned when people don’t know the twist. When it happened, social media exploded with gifs of Eleanor saying “This is the BAD Place,” and it seems to pop up again every time the world has a bad day. The craziest thing to me about the twist is that it’s not even the high point of the show. For me, Season 2 is the best one because in real time, ANYTHING could have happened. Don’t get me wrong, that’s true of every episode of the show, but Season 2 had a genuinely improvisatory air. I was completely on the edge of my seat all the way through that season. This show also has possibly the greatest series finale of all time. There are other contenders for sure, but it’s in the conversation.

tom

To be safe, I uploaded it to Streamable: https://streamable.com/x2kgx0 This way there's no risk of suggested videos or the algorithm like if they watch on Youtube. Also for some more info: Ted Danson knew from the start, and so did Kristen Bell -- she's actually the one filming the reaction as the other four had no idea!

tom

I was also thinking this, I hope they don't think they all pertain to S1 and would hate for them to get spoiled beyond this.

tom

I also considered Tahani's motivations but set it aside because it's sometimes hard to tell what the threshold is with little inconveniences in a show -- do you throw them out, or are they supposed to mean something greater? I didn't realize until Eleanor said "I was thinking, 'man this is torture'". I've seen some reactions and I'm surprised more people don't pick up on it from those words.

tom

I was writing a comment like that second paragraph but you put it into words better than I could. I love how the twist calms that part of my mind that kept going throughout S1 "There shouldn't be so much conflict and unhappiness in heaven!". Yes, it's a TV show, but it clashing with the premise just so we could conveniently have episode-by-episode drama broke my immersion a little, and it all felt so manufactured. The twist makes it so, yes, it was literally manufactured. They're in this experiment / reality tv show / torture / prank show clusterfork, so of course they keep getting put into these situations that make them ill at ease despite being in paradise. Also yes, I hope they watch Mr Robot. My favorite show alongside Mad Men. I actually came up with the ROT-13 thing because of it.

tom

I don't think they'll quite have the time for a rewatch with how many shows they get through, nor would I recommend it but I agree with everything else you said and I'm excited for S2!

tom

I feel like I saw the gif or it as a meme and somehow forgot it or just didn't know the context because the twist still got me. [S2 spoilers - V rira fnj n pyvc sebz ba bs gur rneyvre F2 rcvfbqrf jurer gurl bcrayl gnyx nobhg ubj gurl'er orvat gbegherq ohg sebz ab pbagrkg gur fubj ybbxf fb jrveqyl nofheqvfg naq V pbhyqa'g gryy vs gurl jrer fcrnxvat va zrgncubef gung V thrff V whfg jvcrq vg sebz zl zrzbel orsber jngpuvat gur fubj zbaguf yngre.] S2 is also my favorite, though with time I've really grown warm to S3 especially.

tom

I'm glad you guys didn't buy "Real Eleanor"'s reasoning, for the sake of the reveal, but I never questioned it. She (and people in the "good place") is a stupidly good person, and this is a pretty straightforward moral situation where you can sacrifice yourself to prevent someone else from suffering. Also she's been to the bad place so you could argue she knows how it's like and can deal with it better. A lot could be said but other comments have basically expressed all my thoughts. I was so nervous with people trying to throw you off the scent with regards to the Chidi and Tahani things, because giving fake/misleading info for reactions can sometimes backfire, but I'm really glad it worked out. Yes we were giggling away in those coded messages. As someone pointed out though a lot of them contain spoilers from beyond. There isn't too much in specific you missed though, and don't worry about not seeing them -- I'm sure this episode and its youtube upload will get a loooot of comments pointing out any details or hints or fun facts that we mentioned in those messages. One of my favorite gags is the lava monster just waltzing into the office after we know the twist. It's like the scene is making fun of those shows that do convenient flashbacks where if it lingered a little longer you would see something that gives it away to go "aren't we so clever???". I love this scene making fun of that by having an absurdly out of place demon just unnecessarily showing up despite everyone else appearing human, for the sake of that meta joke.

Brian Harris

S3 is where the show really grows its heart and becomes more than a clever sitcom, I can understand how you’d feel that way.

Roland Cooke

I advocated for J&K not to look up the length of S1, and I'm glad they (and others) listened. When we watched S1 during its initial run, [we] knew it was the finale, but we were focused on how Eleanor (and Jason) could avoid their fate. We weren't anticipating a twist. But that experience is riskier in 2024 since people have been amping up the finale ever since, so it's more likely that a new viewer's brain would consider a twist to end the season. Not knowing exactly when the season is ending reduces that risk a bit, and at zero cost.

DelGuy03

Well said, and it certainly worked out gratifyingly here. But from here on, surely there's no harm in their knowing the length of later seasons? (I'm not proposing to spill it myself, just asking.) Experiencing the finale of season 2 or 3 without knowing it's the end of a season... that would actually lessen the experience, in my view.

b

exactly this! we completely buy the stuff like "oh no, now there's a marriage counselor and identity theft specialist at their door, how wacky" precisely because it's a sitcom. brilliant

Hey, we are there, at the plot twist! Feels so satisfying.... I joined Patreon because... well, you'd been doing West Wing. So, there's that. But I was so happy that you started the Good Place, too! It's so much fun!

Amelie W

So happy you made it to the FIRST big twist. :3

JVTrickypants

I honestly don't think any other actor has the comedic chops to pull off Michael as well as Ted Danson did.

Youtalkingtome

I'm glad you guys can check it out when you have time. The behind the scenes is awesome!! The fact that you're on the bus waiting to watch us makes me so freaking happy! You guys rock

Youtalkingtome

I love that. I love that they kept everyone in the dark. That shows that they actually had a lot of love and care going into this show. That's how you do a freaking twist!!

Youtalkingtome

Bring on the behind the scenes! This is great. We freaking love you guys. Thank you for keeping us in the dark!

Youtalkingtome

It's fantastic storytelling. Plant the hint early on and just misdirect after misdirect. This show is so underrated

Youtalkingtome

I hope until we do the finale you guys continue to use this code. I'm so eager each week to see what in the hell is going on. No pun. I would honestly have been livid if this was spoiled for me!!

Youtalkingtome

You made this for us. All of you. You guys not spoiling this honestly makes me emotional. You're all so fantastic.

Youtalkingtome

Alright so "real" Eleanor, who is actually "fake" Eleanor, had something off about her from the beginning! This payoff was so worth it

Youtalkingtome

I can't wait. Keep us in the dark as much as possible. This might be the most fun we've had doing a show on this channel. The mystery of it all is so gratifying once it's paid off!

Youtalkingtome

All I know about Mr. Robot is that there is a huge twist. I've heard it compared to Fight Club but have no idea in what way

Youtalkingtome

He really did. It never sat right with me and I should have known something was up, but I love Ted Danson so freaking much.

Youtalkingtome

Well dang, now we can't watch Dallas! Jk ;). Yeah I'm so happy that you guys are all so generous and and kind. We really appreciate you not only being here but adding to our viewing experience! You're all the best

Youtalkingtome

It's up there for sure. Certainly once of the best comedies I've ever seen. We love that you're here and hope that you stick around for season 2!

Youtalkingtome

So I don't watch our videos back really. Watching myself makes me cringe. I wanna go back and watch the show with us predicting to see if we call certain things and what it is that we called! One of the best first time watches I've ever seen

Youtalkingtome

That's one benefit of doing shows that have ended, we've never seen them and can avoid twitter spoilers! We're lucky in that way

Youtalkingtome

such a great moment. I hope we get to see the lava demon and other demons. We see that the show can do special effects pretty well. If you wanna save the coded messages until after we finish the show, that would make a really nice send off!

Youtalkingtome

I'm glad you're with us! As I type these comments there are always certain faces I look forward to seeing! Love you all and I appreciate every single person and comment! If we can react to a show that you guys love, that's why we do this! Educate us on why it's awesome

tom

@b And situations like "OK Chidi, choose between these two things". It's sooo obvious in hindsight! But the fact that it's a show is so neatly interwoven into... well, the fact that it's a show @Watch This! with Joe and Kevin Best to keep you in the dark in case you guys ever decide to watch it, but all I'll say is it's truly something special and I would argue it hits on every possible front. One of those somewhat-hidden gems that thankfully got to see it through to its ending because the network believed in it and it's completely a passion project.

tarrsk

The one exception is his earlier scene alone with Shawn (still in his "judge" guise), but they carefully wrote both characters' lines so that they work in context either way. Another fun scene to rewatch is the scene after Michael finds out about Jason and Janet. It's one of the very few times in Season 1 you can clearly see "Real Michael" in Danson's performance. Michael in that scene is much colder and meaner than we're used to seeing him. And there's this particular predatory glare he gives in "demon mode" that we never otherwise see before the big reveal in episode 13. But it works because we as the viewers just assume he's so frustrated at finding out about Jason/"Jianyu" that the anger is getting to him. Meanwhile, Jason is too dumb to notice (and Michael knows this, hence his willingness to drop the act a bit in front of Jason), and Janet doesn't care either way.

tarrsk

As a San Francisco Giants fan, when I heard "man, this is torture," all I thought was "ahh, so Eleanor has been to a 1-0 Matt Cain loss at AT&T Park." ...I kid, of course. Eleanor is obviously a Diamondbacks fan. ;)

tarrsk

Apparently both the evil laugh and the moment where he pushes the potted plant off the table were both improvised by Danson. What a comedic genius.

Maria Stoycheva

Since I hear you are wondering: you did "soft" call a lot of things in your reactions but you were never very confident in your predictions. You did say that you hoped we get to see the Bad place and a possible Medium place, if it existed, so....there you go :D you also changed your mind about Tahani about a hundred times. But, to be fair, so did Eleanor ;) you are doing a great job making predictions and not getting too hung up on the outcome, I think.

Henrique Jambu

A subtle hint was Michael's plan having "The Good Place" in quotations but it's very subtle haha

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, we just enjoy the ride. We don't wanna make definite predictions but this show is the definition of unpredictable. We just have a blast doing it each week

Roland Cooke

As amazing as the twist in the finale is, it's a relatively small component of the overall enjoyment. It's the ambition, talent, and sheer HEART that make the whole show endlessly rewatchable.

Charlie H

One thing I love is people's devotion to not spoiling the ending of the first season, even if it means trying, as you noticed, to get new watchers to brush off suspicions as they arise. Most of us got to experience that simultaneous disbelief/gut punch/"how did I not realise this entire time!" moment at the end, and wish we could wipe it from our memory to experience it again. The second best thing we can do is to make sure others have that opportunity, and then re-experience it vicariously through them! The showrunners did such a good job of ushering you along to the next thing in the story so you didn't linger too long on your suspicions. I had a suspicion something wasn't right the whole way through (my first big doubt was unironically how they could have so many frozen yogurt shops, rather than ice cream lol), but not what. I idly thought perhaps it was purgatory and they were being tested to see if they could become better. For me the alarm bell started when Shaun was happy to accept any two souls, and was fully ringing when "real Eleanor" barged in, saying she would take a spot (it seemed to hit Kevin at the same time that something was off!). I knew then that it was a ruse, but it wasn't until Eleanor said "I thought, wow, this is torture" that I was certain it was the Bad Place. I was watching with flatmates, and getting the twist as soon as she said "torture" meant I had already turned to look at my friend's faces as she said "THIS is the Bad Place!" and saw it hit them all too. So much fun.

Laura Filler

No one wants Frozen Yogurt in the good place

Youtalkingtome

100% This twist was amazing and you all are the absolute best for not spoiling it for us. It's so rare that something with a twist this big isn't common knowledge, ala The Sixth Sense. I'm really glad we could experience this fresh and totally blind

quinintheclouds

came to patreon to see what y'all were watching next and hoo boy, if it couldn't be Bojack Horseman, I'm SO GLAD it's The Good Place! :D Just caught up with these reactions and y'all are proving once again how observant and insightful you can be! Truly a well-written and expertly-performed show! Can't wait for the next season!

Jamie Morgan

I've never seen a fandom so dedicated to not spoiling a show; we don't even skirt around spoilers, we will outright lie to protect them! I love watching reactors see the twist, it's the closest I get to experiencing that feeling again. This show (and particularly this season) is an entirely different show on rewatches.
