I have a lot of thoughts about 9/11, and how it’s touched my life. September 11, 2001 is a day burned in my memory unlike any day I’ve had before or since. The original version of this, Ashes, was written sometime back in 2001 or 2002. Sometimes I don’t like the fact I’m getting older because it keeps pushing things in my life further into the past and reminds me I’m no longer as young as I want to be. Sometimes it lets me reach back and pluck things I did in the past, like I did here, and revisit them. The original draft was only seven lines, but this new version is twelve lines.

Anyway, with today being the twenty-fifth anniversary I’d like to take a moment to reflect and share this, even though it isn’t furry at all.

The towers were one great and tall,

their facades gleaming in the sun.

Millions walked among the cathedral of glass,

in the great rooms and endless corridors,

rising into the sky,

fretting over the business of daily life,

Now the buildings are just ruins,

ashes and toxic dust,

and all that remains are the ruined walls,

carried away by the mourners and placed on display,

to remember the lost,

and the freedoms we once had.
