The woman, who sacrificed herself for Peeta, was mentioned only in the context of having won the Hunger Games by staying in hiding until the very end. She was one of the tributes who knew the plan. Some background on the dynamic with the other guy Gale. He wasn't really her boyfriend. They grew up together and their dads died in the same mining accident. Katniss mother fell apart and Katniss and Gale both became the sole providers for their families at like 12 and 13. They learnt to hunt and track together and kept each other and their families alive. They were in pure survival mode for years. It was only in that summer before the first games when Katniss was 16 that the dynamic had even slightly started to shift between them but before they could even think about it the Reaping happened and Katniss was sent to the games. She was still the only person who could make sure prim didn't starve so she NEEDED to try and survive the games. She stopped having time to think about Gale or Peta despite whatever stuff playing out and how they felt about her beyond acting her part. That's why she doesn't really have any chemistry with Peta in the first movie and there's this awkward dynamic of what could have been with Gale. Between games shes trying to work out how to live after the games only to realize she still has to play the part every year and then she's thrown in the games again and it's sheer survival and trauma bonding with Peta who is consistently keeping her alive and helping through everything. As another wee side note if you remember Peta throwing her the bread in the rain in the first movie, that was just after her father died and she was literally starving to death. The bread he gave her saved her long enough for her to notice a Katniss plant and she remembered her father told her they were edible, and about other edible plants, and the bow. She goes into the woods and manages to hunt something and it's a turning point in her ability to survive and provide for her family. Because of that she has a mental connection of Peta to that day and the plant that meant she'd live. So she had the 2 guys who points of hope in a shitty life that helped her and gave her hope. Before she can get further along in anything in life she's thrown in the games again and is a PTSD ridden mess. This movie she's actually bonding more with Peta cos there's more history now and they're keeping each other alive. Which is the only move they have available

When Effie apologized to Katniss and Peeta about everything they have to go through, you guys imitated their reaction with, 'We don't need your sympathy because we're dying and you're not.' I have to say, I've never heard a reactor have that take. Arguing that Effie can't feel sorry for them just because she isn't in the Games is like saying Katniss can't accept sympathy from her mother or sister since they aren't tributes either. Really bizarre take.

Also, don't get too married to the chemistry concern, focus on the rapport they're building. Effie, Haymitch, Peeta, Cinna, Katniss, etc. They're becoming a team, but also they're surviving things none of them were made to. Trauma makes things strange, but Effie is deprogramming from the Capitol, Katniss has PTSD, Peeta is heartbroken & Haymitch is learning how to hope again after decades of despair. They WILL feel uncomfortable in the roles they're forced into, but they're authentic in how they fill them.

I think it's implied that when they returned to the cornucopia(when Phillip Seymour Hoffman spun the center really fast), KatLips refilled her quiver with more arrows. The Cornucopia is usually a supply location. same as in the first Hunger games. Regardless, She probably has ran out of arrows a hundred times over lol. I laughed because the first moment you guys mentioned she only had maybe 4 or 5 arrows left, she climbed that tree to look at the sky, and proceeded to use one of her FOUR or FIVE arrows to shoot at the sky.........wasted an arrow for that...lol you know. you two remind me a bit of "Grumpy Old Men" such a good movie. if you two haven't seen it. you'll love it so much. right up your alley. HA!

I’m neither depressed nor in a bad mood. I have a great family and plenty of friends, but not a single one who actually enjoys watching movies with me. I go to the cinema with my sister maybe once or twice a year, that’s it. And that’s exactly why I love you guys: you’re basically my friends when it comes to watching movies together. I forgot to comment on the previous movie - but the costumes of the people in the capital were meant to evoke French nobility in the 18th century. The king and his court were described as having makeup plastered on, perfumes to cover up their body odors (since bathing wasn’t in fashion….), wigs etc. And most importantly - they were out of touch with the rest of the population. Think of Marie Antoinette’s “let them eat cake” quote. So in Hunger Games, the makeup and wigs are a shorthand for “these people don’t know what everyone else is going through.” It’s artificial beauty covering up real ugliness.

Katniss did have romantic feelings for Gale at some point, but it was complicated, especially since her main priority was always survival. There was definitely some unresolved romantic tension between them, but no, they were never actually a couple. 😆 It’s understandable, though, if you haven’t read the books—it can easily be misinterpreted that way, especially since they do kiss quite a bit! 😂

For the guys: notice how from the start president Snow is like " we need to contain her, kill her, kill her now, kill them all" and Plutarch Heavensby is very skillfully putting him off the whole time "yes she needs to die but in the right way at the right time, wait, kill her later, wait til she's done things she'll look bad for then kill her, wait" then he scoops her up and flies her away after orchestrating it all right under Snows nose

As everyone else has already said, Katnip and Gale are NOT together. They have always been really close friends when their fathers died in that mines together. They virtually co-depended on one another to feed and keep their families from starving

I will add that the animals in the games are almost always genetically modified in some way... they're called 'muttations'. It's a heavy theme in the books but can be missed in the movies. Katnis' symbol, the mocking jay, was the result of a mutt called a Jabber Jay bred with a common mocking bird. Jabber Jays were used during the war and released into the districts to spy on rebels. They could repeat conversations word for word like a recording. Jabber Jays died out but the mocking jay lived on with only the ability to mimic sounds... I won't beat you over the head with the mocking jay's symbolism but I think this is important background info.

I watched the first movie when I was 12. I hated reading at the time because my parents and teachers only gave me boring books as a kid. When I realized I could read the books instead of waiting a year for this movie I chose to read them and it sparked my life long enjoyment of reading. That scene with the tree at the end and everything that followed was so ridiculously better in the book that when I saw this movie I chose to not watch the next two lol. Now seeing this again years later its diffidently good but man, some times the book is just so much better lol.

I also cannot even begin to explain the horrors Haymitch went through. Reading his story (Sunrise on the Reaping) shined him in a whole new light watching these movies again. His games was a quarter quell (50th)…. 4 tributes per district, 2 male and 2 female. He was 16.

The books are wonderful. Much darker too. I’m glad they didn’t make Jennifer Lawrence lose a bunch of weight for the role bc I would have hated that for her but in the books the desperation and near-starvation of the folks in the outlying districts is shown through their descriptions of being very thin and gaunt and malnourished.

There is flooded comments about this, but i will comment again because its really important. Gale and Katniss are NOT together and NEVER have been. The films make this love triangle trope when there never was one in the books AT ALL. Katniss' narrating in the story makes it clear that she sees Gale as a brother or cousin, of course there has been some attraction but nothing more. Gale is the one who has been into Katniss romantically for years. The movies are very good, but unfortunatly unable to replicate katniss' thoughts during them. She describes her and Peeta's kiss at the beach making her feel warm and fuzzy, feelings she has never had before. She fell for Peeta, Gale is not an option for her. I hope seeing these comments makes you percieve these scenes differently AND how you view the next films!

Peeta is the one who painted the portrait of Rue during the skill evaluation. Also the lady that was vandalized is called an Avox. Someone who committed some sort of offense against the capital or tried to escape from their district. Their tongues are cut out and they're forced to work as slaves in the capital.

This isn't entirely true. It's not that she doesn't have feelings for Gale, it's that she never allowed herself to have feelings, because she never wanted to have children that could starve or be reaped into the games. She also saw how her father's death affected her mother, and probably didn't want to go through that either. However, when Suzanne first wrote the books, she did mean for Gale and Katniss to be platonic. The publishers (I believe) made her add more romancey stuff with Gale to make the love triangle. The fact that happened, is proof enough that there is intended to be a love triangle in the books as well, but the movies do play it up a bit more.

They don't show it in the movie, but in the books she actually grabbed two bows and quivers the first time they were at the cornucopia, then as you said restocked again later when they went back. The first book also mentions the exact number of arrows she has many times. Suzanne is very good at not giving infinite ammo, but instead explaining how frugal she is using them.

Small correction, it's a dandelion that she sees that gives her hope, and after that every time she sees dandelions, she connects them with Peeta, and spring, and life. She does later find katniss in the books as well, but they are a water plant, so she can't find them until she starts leaving the fence again after her father died

Everybody's commenting already about Gale not being Katniss' boyfriend, but I want to point out that the quote unquote "love triangle" side of this franchise was played up for the movies. It's totally understandable that movie-watchers would be under the impression that there's a more concrete relationship going on there. Ironically, the hype and media coverage when the movies were coming out did exactly what the Capitol does: they fixated on the love story and glossed over the revolution. It's much clearer in the book(s), but Katniss and Gale are much more of a will they/won't they thing. Gale's feelings for her are obvious, but Katniss doesn't really know if how she feels is romantic or not.

two important pieces of context, in order of importance: 1) In the books, Peeta lost his leg after the damage in the first games. He uses a prosthetic leg. The films cut this, but retain a lot of his struggles with the terrain/combat. So instead of looking like an amputee in a tough spot, he looks lowkey incompetent in this movie. Also, Katniss lost some hearing due to the explosion at the cornucopia, but it is less impactful so I get why THAT was cut. Not so for Peeta's leg. 2) Haymitch's games were the quarter quell before this, the 50th games. The twist on his games was that they reaped double the number of tributes. 2 boys and 2 girls from each district. I won't give any more details because there is now a book and soon to be movie detailing his games, but I think his experience as a victor against all odds is important to keep in mind.

Katniss tried to feel that way about him, that's why she's kissing him. She thought she needs to response to his feelings with a kiss once in a while, because it was what she is supposed to do. Katniss doesn't understand love, that's just not on her mind. She ignored and misinterpreted her own feelings for Peeta for the longest time lol
