LittleHorus

It's finally here :)) What a show!!!

Rob

We salute the rank, not the man.

Arthur Tollinchi

Fun fact: Do you know why the lieutenant at the jump door tells him to let him know when the light changes from red to green? It's because he has color blindness; is that why he asks him to let him know when the light changes.

Arthur Tollinchi

Jennifer Lopez is overrated but Tom Hanks mmmmm I don’t think so.

Arthur Tollinchi

Fun Fact: Donnie Wahlberg—who plays Sgt. Lipton in Band of Brothers—is actually the brother of Mark Wahlberg and was a member of the legendary boy band New Kids on the Block

Echo Moon

Donnie is a much better actor than his brother Marky Mark. IMO

carrot

So many great younger (up & coming) actors in this whole series, just scattered in the background, in this episode I noticed.. Michael Fassbender, Simon Pegg, Stephen Graham to name a few! Great Series HBO know how to make a limited/mini series that for sure!

Rekebeger

Ohh my gosh! You have a hell of a show infront of you. You are watching the number 1 rated war series. This is flawless!

Perry Taliaferro

They are called "The greatest generation" for a reason!!

MomzillaAngie

Well I’m pretty excited to take this first time watch journey with the guys! I’ve avoided it over the years because I’m not into war shows per se even though I knew it won a million Emmys and Tom Hanks. I’m all in now though. I see my man from the Walking Dead there! I hope he’s as bad @ss as he was in TWD!

I am German and very familiar with the history of this period. The German Army, the Wehrmacht, was strongly influenced by the traditions of the Prussian Army, particularly its emphasis on strict discipline and demanding military training. During the earlier years of the Wehrmacht, roughly from 1934 to 1943, training could be extremely harsh and, in some cases, brutal. There were even cases of soldiers taking their own lives as a result of abuse and excessive pressure during training. However, the conditions and disciplinary practices within the Soviet Red Army could be even harsher, particularly during the war. From 1944 onward, the situation in the Wehrmacht changed dramatically. As Germany suffered enormous losses and urgently needed replacements, training periods were increasingly shortened and the quality of training deteriorated. Many recruits received little more than basic drills, marching, and rudimentary weapons training before being sent to the front. As a result, large numbers of inadequately trained soldiers were thrown into combat, particularly on the Eastern Front, where casualties were enormous. By 1945, the situation had become even more desperate. Some very young recruits received only a few weeks or in extreme cases even less of preparation before being expected to fight experienced Soviet troops. Teenagers with virtually no combat experience were sometimes sent against Soviet armored forces with inadequate weapons and training. Many of them were killed in battles that, by that stage of the war, served little meaningful military purpose. The Germans used mainly the K98k a rifle, Mp40 machine Pistols, Stg44 (first Assault Rifle in history) and of course the MG 42.

Tom Hanks has made a career out of being underrated every-man kind of guy. I love him!

B-String

Just starting the reaction. This series may be one you want to take notes for.

SamlovesWillow

Great reaction again guys. You had me and my fella laughing with "I'm sorry what?!" (we're from the UK). I'm told that some of the material came from Winters' memoirs.

amy McLoughlin

Another fun fact: Spielberg made all the actors do a real intense bootcamp run by army guys for several weeks and David Schwimer (the friends guy) only had to come for the last few days. This was to make the guys truly resent Schwimer to have that dynamic play on camera

Joanna

I’m European. I studied English in school a long time ago, and now I mostly keep it up by watching movies in the language. At the 1:05:45 I was starting to think I was in bad shape... And then I heard that angelic voice: "I'm sorry... what?" 😂 Thanks for those comments, guys. I feel so much better now. 😍

LordM8rshal

I have just one request of you. I am German. Distinguish between the Germans in this series and the Germans of today. Okay? The Germans of today are allies and friends of the United States. Please, and this is the only request I have, keep that in mind.

ODW

I guess I'll be the military guy to add a bit of context here. First of all, these guys were pioneers and not "just" war heroes. They laid the foundations for all parachute forces going forward. They would simply jump out of a plane, break some limbs and decide to do it again once they healed up. Unreal. With respect to Captain Sobel, he is one of the few victims of the series, so to speak. A victim of artistic licence. While he may have been a bit of a prick (who hasn't had a douchebag of an officer?) he did in fact lead a distinguished career throughout the second world war. Dick Winters himself said Sobel made Easy Company, and credited him with forging the unit that walked into D-day along with everything else you're going to witness. That is not a small admission from a man like Winters. Sobel was reassigned before D-Day, but he eventually made it to the continent and served through to the end of the war. The series needed a villain in the early episodes and that's fine. Sobel fit the bill, but reducing a man's entire wartime service to "the douche from episode one" does a disservice to someone who served from start to finish. There will be one or two other characters like that throughtout, you'll see. Probably the greatest mini-series ever made. Glad you're watching it. It is very important to keep these stories alive and I have a few from my family during that time that I can share along the way.

Dan

My grandfather was with these guys in WW2. Watching this show reminds me of him. The greatest and bravest man I ever met. I would give anything just to shake his hand one more time.

Kevin Bisson

I can't wait for you guys to see the next episode. It truly is amazing. This entire series is stunning from front to back. Thanks so much for watching it.

Carlos Gonzalez

Ranked #4 on IMDB greatest shows, just ahead of Chernobyl.

Carlos Gonzalez

This show is where Tom Hardy made his debut.

Phylicia ✨🌸

So excited to be watching this series with you guys! One of the most unforgettable masterpieces ever made. ❤️ please watch the special in the end and the Band of Brothers: Legacy documentary. The last one was just released last September 9th. It’s the show’s 25th anniversary!

Carlos Gonzalez

I had no idea Stephen Graham was in this.

laurajoybubbles

He did the same in Saving Private Ryan, they all went to boot camp except Matt Damon

David Crawford

Yes you should know more. LOL, my favorite series of all time. My impatience is going to kill me on this

Kyle Kozina

The Americans carried an M1 Garand not the Germans

Kyle Kozina

lol you corrected yourself

Steven A Brown

One of my favorite series. prepare the tissues for episode nein.

Kyle K

Not a big Tom Hanks guy either, currahee!

Oliver Pendle

This cast is so stacked no matter how many times I watch I keep pointing at the screen going "Oh it's him!" "Oh it's him!" "Oh it's him!"

marc

Sean - We had a Vietnam and Korean War Memorial in D.C. before we ever had a WW2 memorial - Tom Hanks was the spokesperson for building one - In this series you will hear the voices and testimony of men now taken from us only because of Hanks. Guys, after watching the second episode, watch "The Longest Day" to see more of the first 24 hours of D-day

Travis Groot

Sorry about your chargers. Go bills!! Love ya both.

Travis Groot

They should watch saw and saw 2 for Halloween

Jane at Home

Just a heads up -- you have to watch the documentary We Stand Alone Together which is meant to be seen after you've concluded the series. Just fantastic.

Weston Roberts

I could cry, I am that excited for this. Game of Thrones is one thing, but this is my favorite series of all time. I watch it the week of June 6 every single year.

Ladyjaded

Can you fix your subtitles? First it was Chernobyl and now this? I’m sorry but I’m paying 15 dollars and I’m Deaf. So I just need to know if I should just stick with YT? I’m sorry I’m such a fan and I want to watch you react to both really badly!

Carlos Gonzalez

Yeah, like Michael Fassbender. Holy cow how did I miss him the first 3 times I watched this?

Furkan

best series ever. thank you guys!

Sarah_M

I feel certain this will make me cry. I'd take bets on that. It's good odds.

BrillC

@16:30 "Spaghetti," he says 😂

Alex

incredible show cant wait for this and the pacific must be watched next!

Kimber Voss

I’ve never seen past episode 2 of this. It’s not bc I don’t understand the weight of its successful impact, it’s bc I do.. and the series deserves my full attention & time. So, what better way to watch it, than with M &S and the lovely patrons here?? I’ll do my best to keep up!! That said, I gotta agree with S about Hanks. I thought he was brilliant, when I was a kid. And while, I still enjoy some of his roles & films he has been in, I prefer more nuanced actors now. He’s one of those actors for me, like Nick Cage, where you can’t take the Tom out of Tom Hanks or the Nick out of Nick Cage, in any role..if that makes sense..though they are both probably lovely people. Give me the acting brilliance of the Steve Bushemi’s & the DDD’s and the Paul Dano’s.. and the Damien Lewis’s.. incredible.. Alright.. I don’t think I could write anymore today if I tried.. I’m posting this during the opening sequence.. I’ll save more opinions for later.. Best to everyone this week.. kick its a*s, no matter what it tries to throw at ya!! Xo

Richard Frost

There is an amazing podcast by the creators of the show - I suggest Mikey and Sean go listen to it it's incredible

BaboulasMan

I cannot imagine why kids these days dont want to fly to the middle east to kill and torture innocent civilians for oil profits... when their grandparents wanted to fight the NAZIS SO BADLY... WW2 was different. Also alot of American Nazi lovers both then and now....

Carissa

I am a young’n - 32. My parents had me watch this and The Pacific when I was in middle school and high school and I am really glad they did. My grandfather fought in the Pacific and it gave me a whole different perspective as to what the world was like then. Major respect for all of those who fought for our country. Love you guys!! I hope you move onto The Pacific after this.

The Japan "man, woman, and child" thing is a fairly common myth perpetuated to make the American public believe that dropping the atomic bomb was a necessary evil. There certainly were fanatics in the Japanese population, however a majority of the people were poor and hungry. A full scale land invasion was far from the only other option to end the war besides dropping the bomb.

Peter Magyar

Hi, guys! MSP OG from Hungary here! (so I'm sorry for my engkish) I have read the book by Stephen E. Ambrose, and as far as I remember the members of Easy Company later admitted that without the harsh treatment of Captain Sobel, the company wouldn't have performed that excellent in combat as it has. No matter how they hated him.

Robert Galle

They did lots of terrible things to us to make us suffer more. This guy took it too far and was a lot worse than the ones I dealt with. There were some that were worse than others but mostly different training methods. Also they used to tell us when jumping at 1000ft that we had the rest of our lives to open the reserve chute if your main didn’t open.

Vicious Id

You asked what purpose it served for Captain Sobel to act the way he did towards the men under his command who he was training. The point of all the things he did was to TRY to get them to quit. His job was to try to wash out any man who wasn't strong enough mentally or physically to be a paratrooper.
