I've been doing this YouTubery since 2008, so you'd think I'd be getting the hang of it by now, but no. I'm using DaVinci Resolve now to edit, and it has a lot of annoying quirks. I keep having to watch tutorials on how to do the simplest things and thinking "How in the world anyone guess THAT?" Anyway, it doesn't tell you whether a clip is stereo or mono unless you ask, and the way it displays the sound VERY strongly suggests stereo, and the way to make the sound come out of both speakers involves a deep delve into arcane menus, equipped with pitons and a packed lunch. Twice now I have uploaded videos with some or all of the sound in one speaker only. Poo.Anyway, here is the fixed sound version of the Battle of Asculum (war waggons) video: https://youtu.be/Ru9JByZBeSgWhile I'm here: I've been trying out the new testing feature with three alternative title and thumbnail combinations. So far, the results have all been very similar: all three get roughly a third of the clicks, even when they are very different.

My first thought was to set the title and thumbnail combination (I wish they tested the two things separately, but they don't) to whichever got the highest number of clicks, but then it struck me that this might be very bad strategy.

There are some people who are going to click on one of my videos because it is one of mine. I don't have to worry about those. There are others who won't click no matter what, and there is no point in worrying about those. The only ones of interest are the floating voters, who might click but only if the title and thumbnail appealed to them. Having three thumbnails in use at once triples my chance of reeling any given one of these in (well, not exactly, because each might be shown only one of the three once, but I notice that I am shown the same thumbnails a few times before they disappear off the RADAR).

Perhaps, then, the best long-term policy is to keep all three types of bait in the water (unless perhaps there is a clear run-away winner, but in eight tests I've done so far, there never has been). It should also increase the number of new viewers, and perhaps they are the most important. What do people think?(No charge for this post, obviously)

I do get served MULTIPLE different thumbnails and titles on various videos, not just one. Honestly sometimes it's annoying, because for a moment you think there's a new video out, when it's just a different thumbnail/title. Such is life. Heh, your experience with DaVinci reminds me of me trying to use Premiere after being used to Vegas. Just absolutely no clue how anything worked, and nothing made sense. Hope you get the hang of it, from what I hear it's as capable as Premiere, but significantly cheaper (or free for personal use).

I always wandered how YouTube is counting clicks from a notification or from a subscription tab because that's the only way I watch videos (and I already have more in the pipeline than I have time to watch). Anyway... I saw your video with one thumbnail then YouTube proposed your video to me as the next one, but now the thumbnail was different so I thought "stupid YouTube is again suggesting old videos thatbI have watched already". Not that I ever click on those suggestions on purpose. I'd love to disable all suggestions from YouTube and the ReVanced team is doing their best but it's a cat-and-mouse situation. Anyway... thumbnails. Then I finally started your video... (the notification still had the old thumbnail) and immediately I remembered something I had to do. So now here I am searching through YouTube history for that Lindybeige video I wanted to watch and thinking how broken YouTube is that it didn't remember it. Of course your video was there, but with a different thumbnail but my reaction was "when the hell did I accidentally click on that?". Anyway... I really should get back to sleep. I'm sure all that insight will be very useless to you. Good night.

Most of the time when I am working, farming or driving and then I am listening on the phone, filling the gap of a radio. I wouldn't be able to make sense of the thumbnail anyway. Short, witty tittles appeal to me – the long ones are too long to read without clicking. I'd actually prefer them to not have video for the battery life. To me, these are the majority of videos I listen. Content like much of yours I like to WATCH. I would be sitting down at my computer and I might be able to see the thumbnails or witty long titles. I would take the time and enjoy watching, like a documentary maybe. Time is too precious to watch everything interesting. Then there's the ones that might fit a coffee break. And since you're on that list too, I'll mention someone I've never heard before and happened to click yesterday: Title: Medieval Shoes are Surprisingly Simple to Make. Thumbnail: Feet in pointy shoes. Length: About 20 mins. By: Bernadette Banner (1.89 milj. subs. not that it matters to me.) Berdanette interviews someone who makes her a pair of shoes which she will be using with her armor to be used in a costume themed after Joan D'Arc. There's some history, some methods and tools shown and the plot was interesting enough for me to maybe click on her next video on a break. Not to go too deeply in the video my point is: Both the title and the thumbnail were simple with a subject I'm reasonably interested in. I tend not to muck around searching for content. The algorithm feeds me it's propaganda and she happened to be in the first dozen icons I clicked. I hope this helps. Ps. I have wondered is it normal to have more or less every word written in capital letter in a title in English? I've seen it done before, but haven't bothered to check the rules for the grammar.

I think returning viewers will more easily recognise your titles that follow the form "A point about ---" New viewers might be more interested in something unique, but I'm not a new viewer so I don't know. What I do know is that having three seperate titles and thumbnails does stir up conversation I'm the comment section, and loads of people get very confused by that. That being said, I think using all three will be as effective as anything else, until the math shows a clear winner.
