Hey patrons!

For December's update, I thought I'd take a look back at some of the most interesting things I've played in 2020. I think Hades has been my biggest surprise of the year, but there are some other beauties in this list too.

Let me know what I've missed! What video games mattered to you this year?

I agree 100% with your feelings on The Last Of Us 2. For me, the best thing that game did was show what can be done with accessibility.

It felt to me like The Last of Us 2 went in with the assumption that you completely agreed with Joel's decision at the end of the first game and spent the whole time trying to change your mind. Given the games that dominate the triple-A space, I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually an accurate assessment of their target audience overall, but yeah, if you're not one of those people it does kind of feel like you're in an argument with someone who's shouting too loud to hear that you're agreeing with them. The thing I did actually really like about the game though is that - in complete contrast to the main story beats - the gameplay is actually really supportive of minimal-murdering play-styles, and it felt like a lot of the NPC dialog (plus an inability to move/hide bodies) was actively encouraging that kind of play. I actually got through a decent majority of the (non-infected) encounters purely through some a combination of sneaking, diversions, and making a mad dash for the exit, with a relatively small number of murders when I felt I had no other choice, which made for an interesting challenge. It also played nicely into feel of being an intruder struggling to survive in enemy territory, as opposed to the one-man invading army that I'm used to being in most action-adventure games. Overall I did mostly enjoy the game, but it definitely felt like there was a big conflict between the characters as I played them in gameplay, and then characters as they behaved in cutscenes, which did make it hard to really engage the plot (aside from Lev and Yara's storyline, which I thought was really good).

First of all, Crusader Kings III is a masterpiece. Thank you for stating that you were bothered with the themes in The Last of Us. That means that they got their message across. The whole game is about how we percieve our "enemy". I played the game, was bothered by it. Thought about it. And after thinking about it, this is one of the best games I have ever played. I haven't seen that in any other game. They are breaking boundries. You can love that or hate that. I love that.
