Hey patrons!

Over the last month we've interviewed 19 employees from outsourcing studios in Malaysia and Indonesia who've provided artwork for SO MANY games you've likely played.

What we found was yet another example of the games industry benefiting from a massive amount of unpaid labour. As we continue to see more reporting on the working conditions for game developers at the world's top studios (which is great!), it's important to note that not everyone is being heard from.

Here's our story on how AAA game publishers profit from other people doing their crunch overseas.

This took a lot of work, with so many interviews being done and we've also needed to hire voice actors from both countries to help read the quotes and protect the anonymity of our sources. We couldn't do this kind of work without your generous support. Thank you!

What an ambitious & important topic. Looking forward to watching this one!

Thank you for this important work. Truly disheartening to see unpaid overtime only getting worse with outsourcing and the view of game development culture baking this in. I'd been at EA for less than a year at the time of the ea_spouse LiveJournal blog post, and even then, the open secret was that the games industry was a meat grinder for bright eyed and optimistic people who could be replaced when they inevitably burned out. What a tragedy. Thank you again for your work. ❤️
