Happy Friday, Addie. The Bourne Identity (2002) is my all-time favorite Matt Damon movie where he's in a lead role of an action movie, although Oppenheimer (2023), where he's in a supporting role as General Leslie Groves, is ranked higher. In general, the Bourne film series was my introduction to Matt Damon. I own this movie on DVD in both Widescreen (2.39:1) and Full Screen (1.33:1) formats. See you soon for The Bourne Supremacy (2004).

My Friday evening entertainment is now set... Thanks, Addie! 😁

Happy Friday, Addie! 😊 I've been looking forward to this one ever since it won the poll. This is easily one of my favorite Matt Damon movies. Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today, and a great weekend! 😊

You should check out Run Lola Run. It stars Franka Potente and she's incredible in it. It made me such a big fan of her, I was disappointed at how little she got to do in this franchise(especially since, in the original Bourne novels, her character is much more important and gets to do as much action stuff as "Jason" does, particularly in the 2nd book). Anyway, Run Lola Run is an action, comedy, romance, crime and family drama with a thumping soundtrack. It's an exhilarating experience.

Speaking of Doug Liman, who directed this movie & Edge of Tomorrow (2014), I also suggest Swingers (1996), Go (1999), the Unrated version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Jumper (2008), Fair Game (2010), The Wall (2017), American Made (2017), Locked Down (2021) and Chaos Walking (2021). #MoreDougLimanForAddieCounts

LightsCameraJake

Its like James Bond if he were a fugitive who lost his memory.

Alex Tan

I second those. Maybe Addie can put them in a Matt Damon poll. #MoreMattDamonForAddieCounts

Paranoid, conspiracy theory Addie is so much fun! 🙂. Looking forward to you unraveling more in the franchise.

Happy Friday, Addie. The Bourne movies are great action movies, and pretty influential for it's time, and although I love the movies, a part of me will always be slightly disappointed. My dad had the novels the movies are based on, and I read them when I a few years before this movie came out, and was a bit dissatisfied when I realized that the movie scrapped almost half of the concept of the novel. That said, I understand the reason why they did it, since the novels took place in the cold war and had characters and plot elements that were mostly relevant for that time, which would make it hard to modernize in the same way. Instead they opted to highlight the secret/illegal black ops part of the story, which fit more for the times of the movie. Which also means that the following movies has basically nothing to do with the novels of the same name. Still, if you like these kinds of thriller novels, the Bourne Identity novel has an extra layer to the mystery of his identity that the movie scrapped, so even those that saw the movies would find something fresh in it. There, that's my book recommendation for the day. Hope you have a great weekend! 😊

Patrick Egan

Yes, this movie is loosely based on the novel by the same name, but there are a LOT of changes, mostly because the novel was very much a story of its time. The concept of Bourne being a government operative who gets amnesia after being shot and lost at sea is from the book, and the idea of having the bank info embedded on him is from the book, but the mission he was originally assigned and pretty much everything else is brand new. As a result, the sequels have nothing in common with the books except their titles(Supremacy & Ultimatum). One thing I love about these movies is they don't spoonfeed you the information. We as the audience are given some information that Jason doesn't have, but not enough to know everything. If you liked the twists and turns of this movie, I think you'll really enjoy the second one. Many people think The Bourne Supremacy is the best in the series. If conspiracies and secret black ops organizations etc. are your bag, I HIGHLY recommend the movie Conspiracy Theory. It was directed by Richard Donner who did the Lethal Weapon movies and it stars Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart. Very underrated little gem of a movie.

Love this series (...up through the third one). This is a great movie, but the second one is better than this, and the third one is better than the second. Spectacular cast, characters, direction, dialogue, just everything--also, the only allowable use of shaky cam in all of cinema (all other uses are hereby disallowed--shazam!).

Steve SG-1

I've never seen this movie but I enjoyed it, don't like the shakey cam but I'll suffer through it.

Just a heads up then if you’re not aware, the next two films (which I like as much if not more than this one) are from a different director (Paul Greengrass) who comes from a documentary background and loves close-up, handheld camera work. It will make much of the first film feel like it was all done on a tripod and I completely understand when people find it hard to watch and even motion sickness inducing.

LightsCameraJake

Man, I forgot how bad the camera work was in this film. Never been a fan of the shaky cam, but its Matt Damon so.

LightsCameraJake

Despite the shaky cam I enjoy all the original 3 films but yeah even some of the "found footage" films out there where its meant to look handheld are not as shaky as these movies lol.

As someone who is very susceptible to becoming disoriented and nauseous by the motion of select movies and some video games, I found these movies to be extremely hard to watch on a large screen. I wasn't old enough to see these in theatres (I wasn't even alive for the first one) but my first watch of the trilogy as a marathon was on the 65" screen in our living room, and I had to cover my eyes for most of the action scenes because I felt like I was going to throw up. I still enjoyed the movies, but I missed a lot of the action. Fortunately, after discovering that watching movies on a much smaller screen like my tablet didn't have the same effect on me, I watched them in full years later without having to look away. But I was NOT a fan of the shaky cam for obvious reasons. And for a while a LOT of movies did the shaky cam thing. It sucked.

BubblyRainbows

I can't say a lot about the content of this movie because a lot of my thoughts are tied to the other two in the trilogy, and I don't want to spoil anything. But I will say two things: One, this is my favorite spy-movie franchise. I was never a fan of the Bond movies, and the Mission Impossible movies are really good, but they just didn't grab me the way these did. I'm so glad you're reacting to these. I liked them all. Even the 4th and 5th ones, though obviously the initial trilogy are by far the best. The second movie is probably my favorite, but the third has a sequence in it that might be my favorite sequence ever put on film. Two, the ending credits song, "Extreme Ways" by Moby (of which he did a different mix for every film as far as I know, so each end song is a bit different) became a permanent fixture on my music playlist because I liked it so much. Looking forward to watching the next two with you!

Most of the principle shooting was done in 2000 and post production was initially completed in 2001. Due to the nature of the subject matter the film was held back from release after the September 11 attacks in NYC. The studio wasn't sure at first if a film in which the CIA were presented as bad guys would sell post 9-11, so they shot a few additional scenes that would have affected the plots of the later films. One of these scenes had Brian Cox cornering Bourne in Mykonos before he contacts Marie, offering to bring him back to work for them again, no hard feelings. I presume this edit would have excluded the shooting of Chris Cooper's character as well. Luckily (IMHO) they left the new material out of the movie and stayed with the original concept and ending.

LightsCameraJake

Walton Goggins is in a lot of films, but always just a background character or a supportive roll. I had no idea he was in this movie for the brief time until you pointed him out lol. Im glad he got a main roll in Fallout.

Prophet2272

Hell yeah "Extreme Ways" is such a great song for this movie. Introduced Moby to me.

Prophet2272

With the Bourne movies I can count on is fast paced action, an intense car chase, and "Extreme Ways"

Doug

I remember seeing this one in the theaters when it came out and it was funny because if I remember right it was right around when the running joke about Affleck and Damon having a rivalry over who could be the best action star was going around since Affleck was playing Daredevil not too long after this first Bourne movie hit. (And frankly I think Damon definitely came out with the better film of the two! That Daredevil film is kind of mediocre.)

LightsCameraJake

Addie going: "Jason, you need to be careful, they are planning on killing you!" Its actually them that needs to watch out for Jason Bourne xD

Mister Lou

loved your reaction Addie! your excitement/frustration is just so pure and raw and enduring.. can't wait to continue this journey with you! keep up the good work!

Ido Gordin

The movie is based on three books but the plot in the books is different from the movies.

Joe Blankenship

I think it works for these Bourne movies. But like in Cloverfield? All that shakiness got on my nerves. Hard to watch at times.

Joe Blankenship

He's hilarious in Vice Principals and Righteous Gemstones.

ButtercupsTrueLove

Thanks for an enthusiastic reaction! The assassin at the cottage was played by Clive Owen - best known for "Children of Men" (2006). He gave a late night talk show interview just a few years ago and admitted to the host that what he considers to be the high point of his acting career is... his single appearance on season 10 episode 5 of Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2020). Another film that has an espionage theme with the protagonist trying to figure out why people are trying to kill him is "Three Days of the Condor" (1975), starring Robert Redford, based on the best seller, "Six Days of the Condor". I guess the movie ran short on time.

Byrd N. Hand

Owen would've been a great James Bond. Unfortunately, he's too old for the role now.

JBK405

I consider this one of the best of the Bourne films, but that opinion is a relative minority since others say they get better and better after this. I love the slow pace to it. The steady, methodical movements Jason makes, which helps sell everything as "realistic". It's not, but they SELL it. I could more easily accept this as "real life" than almost any other action movie out there. Watching you spin theories at the end is half the fun of watching any reaction. Some are closer than you might think, some are way off base, but that's what helps me recapture the feeling of watching something for the first time.

crazyivan

I loved the Bourne novels.
