Happy Wednesday, Addie. Cowabunga to you for watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990). Jeremy is gonna be so proud of you. This will also be MY first time watching this movie as well. In fact, I recently got it on DVD and I plan on watching it soon.

This was pretty much the last 'kid' IP I ended up getting into (via the original cartoon series) before transitioning into adulthood. My biggest issue with these movies upon their release was how Raphael was portrayed in them; in the cartoon series, he was basically the group wiseass (and, along with the fun-loving Michelangelo, my favorite as a result)... but here he was a brooding loner whom the others didn't seem to like all that much. Of course, I would later find out that that's also how he was written in the original comics by creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, but it still felt wrong to me. 🤔 P.S. You're going to put "RoboCop" on YT, right? You kind of skipped over it for this week's schedule over there...

Phil Stubblefield

Awesome, Addie! I wouldn't rank this as a great movie, but for some reason it *really* captured me when it came out; I think I saw it three times in a theater in the first month of its release. It will so fun to watch it with you! 🍕🍕

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 I've been looking forward to this one since I saw it win the spinning wheel on your Q&A. And I had no idea that Sam Rockwell was in this movie until I looked up the cast list for a couple of actor recommendations. For more Corey Feldman(the voice of Donatello), I very highly recommend the 1988 "License to Drive", and for next Halloween the 1989 "The Burbs" and the 1987 "The Lost Boys". Looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

The Dingo

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! WHAT A GREAT DAY!

...and are we going to get a Holiday Movie Recommendation post tomorrow?

Steve SG-1

Did you catch all the Daredevil similarities? And yes that was a young Sam Rockwell as one of the thugs.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003) animated series will always be my favorite version of the Turtles, but I still adore this film. The origin of the Turtles draws heavily from Frank Miller's work on Daredevil, along with Jack Kirby. The original concept was that the same toxic waste that gave Daredevil his powers spilled into the sewer, mutating the Turtles and Splinter. Daredevil, and Wolverine, battle a group of ninjas known as The Hand, while the Turtles face The Foot. Splinter is a nod to Stick, Daredevil's mentor. Shredder himself has many parallels to Silver Samurai, who first appeared in Daredevil #111 (July 1974) as a Daredevil villain before becoming more closely associated with the X-Men and Wolverine. Although there has never been a crossover between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel, DC delivered Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019), and it is fantastic. The animated film not only does justice to Batman, his villains, and the Bat-Family, but it also perfectly captures the Turtles along with their villains, blending both worlds seamlessly together. Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019) is a must-watch and is honestly one of the best Turtle & Batman films.

Oh wow, I had no idea this was coming. For me, this will always be THE Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When I'm 90 it will still be what i first think of when I think of this franchise. I still have my VHS copy, and bought it on DVD a few years ago to keep up-to-date. I think it's the perfect blend of the original comics, which were noticeably darker and more intense, and the '80s cartoon that really exploded their popularity. The best of both worlds. Coincidentally, I just bought the entire '80s cartoon on DVD last week.

Victor

Didn’t think I’d see you react to this but def a great surprise 🎉

The Dingo

I saw this movie with my mom. Ibremember being absolutely blown away by it

Vwlss Nvwls

I saw this in the theater with a friend of mine, and we really did not expect it to be any good, but we wanted a movie to see. We were so amazed at how good it actually was. I love this version more than the recent. I just think these older ones have more heart.

Vwlss Nvwls

The first thing you see at the start of the movie is the Twin Towers, which is always bitter sweet to see in these older movies.

Jasbro

Now this is a pleasant surprise, one of my childhood favorites, hopefully you consider watching the 2nd movie as well it is just as good imo, the 3rd one is ok but i know a lot didnt like it.

Julian San

When I signed up for the Addie Counts Patreon, TMNT was not some thing I expected to see 🤣

Alex Tan

Agreed. I believe that seeing the Twin Towers in 80s & 90s movies will ALWAYS be bittersweet.

Vwlss Nvwls

I always loved how when Casey was saving Splinter, Splinter was trying to hold a fighting pose until Casey said he was a friend, then he eased off. It was a small, but nice touch. Kowabunga was the TMNT catch phrase, so all movie everyone was waiting for them to say it, so it was awesome that they had Splinter finally say it at the end. :D The actors who played April and Casey were an actual couple during the filming. You are right, there is a person in the suit, actors doing voices, and lots of people controlling the facial movements off screen. I remember seeing a behind the scenes. Still amazing today, but I think practical effects are almost always better than CGI, because the mind can tell what is fake even if only subconsciously.

Alex Tan

Hear, hear. Addie, your reactions bring out a lot of joy to us in times both good and bad.

inspectordh

100% Agree. She is the kind of person that you would want as a friend

Prophet2272

I quote this movie so much. My favorite movie growing up as a kid.

Just to answer the question at the end, the turtles and splinter were created by Jim Henson's company (aka the creator of the Muppets), it was one of the last projects Henson before he died in 1990. On a tangent I haven't seen it but the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film from 2023 is supposedly excellent with a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It might be worth considering as a follow-up at some point. 🙂 (I did see Batman versus Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles a while back, and it was pretty decent, if only because the fight between Batman and Shredder was kind of great!)

JBK405

Now that I've had time to actually watch your reaction, I'm so stoked that you enjoyed it so much! Like I said as soon as I saw that you posted this video, this is THE Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for me. I've long been a proponent of practical effects, and you're exactly right that the way these costumes hold up 30 years later is a perfect example as to why. CGI from 5 years ago already looks clunky and dated, while this is still beautiful. Technically speaking this is an Independent Film, and for a while held the record for the highest-grossing independent film in history. That record has since been broken by numerous other movies, but it goes to show how big of a cultural movement the turtles were back then. The sequels have steadily diminishing returns. The first sequel -- The Secret of the Ooze -- isn't bad per se, but it definitely steps down from the solid quality that we saw here. Less heart, more gimmicks. It may be worth a watch, but understand that it's a lesser product. The second sequel -- Turtles in Time -- is a further quality drop and widely regarded as a disappointment. I'd say the best of all the later films is the animated film that came out last year, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem". While the nostalgia factor and history can't displace my fondness for the original film, Mutant Mayhem was brilliant and set its own high bar. That would be great for you to watch as well.

Has this channel turned into the cartoon network? Asking for a friend? ;-)

Hehe, it seems a little like that this week!

You are the best Addie 💖

Hey hey heeeey Addie!😉 This was always one of my favorites since my 90's childhood! Now you need to see "TMNT 2: THE SECRET OF THE OOZE" next! COWABUNGA!!!🤣🤣🤣

baxterzeppo

I saw this in theaters as a kid! I was a TMNT fanatic, came up right when it was in the zeitgeist, chased the toys for holidays and birthdays. Can’t wait to see you tackle Part 2!

Intro to the animated tmnt series

Joshua AKA Spider Man

Great reaction Addie I first saw this movie in theaters when I was 3. Have loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ever since. There are 3 movies this one is the best one. Hope you watch the other two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movies too.

EmAtinyDragon

Wow, that's so cool! I can't imagine seeing this in the theaters. I was a toddler when the movie came out. My brother had a VHS of this that I watched so much. So many of the jokes went over my head as a kid that I can appreciate now as an adult.

EmAtinyDragon

If this is to the original animated series, it's a classic and one of the best intros ever made.

EmAtinyDragon

This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. It's what developed my love for Leonardo and Raphael. What you have to remember is even thought they are huge turtles, they are just teenagers. Not the most mature lol. I love how emo Raphael is in this. I like how the actors of the turtles also were cameos (as humans) in the movie like the guy in the taxi. This was one of the movie scores from my childhood that has stayed with me. The electronic music was so unique for the time.

inspectordh

It is. Great intro and song
