Other noteworthy films that give the impression that it was shot all in one take: "Birdman (or, The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" and Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope" (his first color film, incidentally). Other Sam Mendes films to watch: "American Beauty," "Road to Perdition," "Jarhead," and "Revolutionary Road."

Baldemort

One of the very few movies ever made to look like it was done in one single take and no cuts from the camera

Happy Friday, Addie. I'm glad that you enjoyed 1917 (2019). This is one of my favorite war movies, especially given the cinematography, which was shot and edited as of it were a oner. If you thought you felt like you were right beside Blake and Schofield, then imagine seeing this movie in IMAX 1.90:1, with 26% more picture filling the screen at the top and bottom. That's EXACTLY how my dad & I saw this movie.

Road to Perdition is one of my favorite gangster movies of all time and Jarhead is a great comedy, especially for anyone who’s been in the military.

This is one of my favorite war films. I really wish World War I was given more attention by Hollywood, there are other good WWI movies like War Horse, All Quiet on the Western Front and The Lost Battalion, but it really had a lot more impact on the modern world than a lot of people would think it did. I’m also just really disappointed I was born too late to meet any WWI veterans, there were a handful left when I was younger, but not enough for me to get to meet any. I do have a close friend though whose grandfather lost his arm the first day on the Somme in 1916.

Happy Friday, Addie! 😊 This is such a great film. Easily one of my favorite war time movies. Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today, and a great weekend! 😊

...and also Away We Go (2009) & Empire of Light (2022). #MoreSamMendesForAddieCounts

"Away We Go" is fine, but I wouldn't consider it essential viewing. And I still haven't seen "Empire of Light."

Just like Indiana Jones, the wheel has chosen wisely.

Would love to see you react to Fury, another fantastic war movie and one of my all time favorites, it also has quite the ensemble cast as well with Brad Pitt leading the way.

PHILLIP CORNISH

I second Fury. A well made creative story line and real filmmaking. Not super heroes running around coloured underwear saving the world over and over again on a rinse and repeat business model to milk money. ;-)

Andrew Roach

I second Birdman, a great "one shot" movie that also happened to win the Oscar for best picture for whatever that's worth.

Alex Tan

I third Fury (2014). Another war movie for you, when you're ready for another one. #FuryForAddieCounts

Baldemort

I 4th the Fury movie. WW2 movie about a Tank squadron.

Quantum Unicorn

Thanks for watching my movie recommendation, Addie, I am glad you enjoyed it! This is one of my favourite war movies, and it made for a great watch-along.

Mister Lou

this is also one of my favourite war movies! the lead is also in a great movie called Captain Fantastic.. and it's... just fantastic, what can I say? I'd say if you like this movie and the Lord of the Rings (which I know you do) you're gonna love Captain Fantastic!

Everyone is suggesting Fury, I'd just like to toss "all quiet on the western front" into the convo! Anyways great readction as always :)

The new Nosferatu movie that was released in theaaters last month is now available digitally. I hope you react to it. It stars Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe.

Horror movies can be watched in other months too. :)

Davis H

Good shout.

What I enjoyed so much about this movie is that it never switched to a different scene with other actors and settings. So very unique. What I did notice this time watching is that they would circle around the actors so they could introduce a different scene and location.

Doug

What a great movie. Just to answer the trivia question, there are 34 cuts in the film, almost all of them are just very carefully concealed. 🙂 I think the longest uncut section is about 10 minutes? (It runs from the time Schofield exits the truck all the way through when he crosses the bridge, gets shot at, gets into the building and then kills the sniper but gets shot in the process.)

Addie Counts

34 wow!! I only caught maybe 4 of the cuts!

Doug

Same here, I wouldn’t have guessed there were that many if I hadn’t looked it up!
