Here's the full length reaction to Taxi Driver! I don't think this is one of my favorites of Scorsese's movies (I think my favs are The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street). I know this is one of his most iconic movies though, so I'm glad I watched it! I feel like this ending can be interpreted several different ways, so let me know your thoughts! Enjoy!

Also, I'm going to add Shutter Island to my October schedule because it was second place in the poll. It seems like it might be a lil creepy, so I think it'll be perfect for October!

I never understood why this movie was considered such a classic. It's good, but not amazing.

Add-E finding the loophole! A “creepy” movie? I’m going to fill in a spot for October so I won’t have to watch a scary movie! Well played, Add-E 👏👏👏👏👏

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 It's been awhile since I've seen this movie. So I'll definitely be checking this one out. The only thing I remember is the cast. Glad that you're adding "Shutter Island" to your list. For more Jodie Foster, I highly recommend the original 1976 "Freaky Friday" and the 1996 "Nell". Looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

Happy Monday, Addie. You talkin' to me? Taxi Driver (1976) is one Martin Scorsese movie that I must watch soon. BTW, I've noticed that you've worn your The Midnight Heroes t-shirt during almost every Martin Scorsese movie since you watched The Departed (2006). It looks great on you.

Baldemort

Shutter island will blow you away. Buckle your seat belt.

The Dude Abides

Just imagine how bad Travis Bickle would’ve been like with the internet at his disposal.

The Dude Abides

Because some people think everything Scorsese makes is Oscar worthy. I’m not one of those people but they’re out there

I will have to disagree with Addie, 'Shutter Island' isn't what she thinks, maybe she'll move it up in September. But she can always save 'Dracula 1991' and 'The Evil Dead Trilogy' for Halloween time. Maybe even 'Sleepy Hollow'.

I agree that not every Scorsese film is Oscar-worthy, but neither are the works of Kubrick or one of my favorite directors, Ridley Scott. People can have a different opinion of what makes a great film and I'm okay with that. No one is forcing us to watch someone else's choices.

ButtercupsTrueLove

I glad that Addie let's us know how she thinks about the films we choose for her to watch and not feel like she has to sugar-coat her opinions. I've watched "Taxi Driver" a number of times but I only want to do so in recent years when someone else's reaction can accompany the movie, otherwise I'm too familiar with it to really enjoy it on my own. What I can appreciate these days are the comedic interactions when Albert Brooks is in the scene. I've never looked it up but it makes me wonder if his character was written as the first choice to be cast in the role, as there is little else humorous in the movie. I also enjoy Bernard Herrmann's luscious film score, after his work for Hitchcock's films. As for Travis Bickle's motivations in the story, it almost feels like the movie sets a precedent for real life events that were to follow even to the present day, with shooters and murderers targeting people, sometimes well known people and other times people they have never met, solely to gain attention. The notoriety might be what Travis was seeking - it looks like Senator Palantine was his intended first target until the opportunity fell through.

Addie, Are you talkin' to me? yes it is suppose to make you feel that way and the ending was deliberately ambiguous for interpretation.

Steve Mercier

My favorite Scorsese movie, without a doubt, and one of my all time favorites period.

Doug

And he came so close to killing Senator Palpatine and stopping the Empire! 🤷‍♂️ Back on track, though, this movie is good but definitely not one of my favorites, off the top of my head I can think of at least four or five other Scorcese films I enjoy more than this one. It's kind of slow at times, the music is annoying, and the plot just doesn't hold me much. Aside from Robert De Niro being a top notch actor, and some interesting shots, this one just doesn't grab me. P.S. Shutter Island works for October, although FYI it's more of a psychological thriller than anything else. So really you could just watch it next time you're in the mood for a suspenseful flick. P.P.S Peter Boyle was also the dad in Everybody Loves Raymond, and the monster in Young Frankenstein (which is unfortunately very hard to find on streaming these days because of some byzantine licensing issues I think.)

Doug

I think my top picks for October would be Let the Right One In (2008, not the remake), An American Werewolf in London (1981), and The Cabin in the Woods (2012). And as a dark horse entry (since I doubt it would win a poll), I think she might like Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2007) since it's got kind of a Tucker and Dale vs Evil parody vibe to it. 😄 (The Exorcist would also be good, but she's said a few times she's really reluctant to watch that one.)

It's been a loooong time since I saw this movie. It's really heavy. Probably be a long time before I watch it again. In the beginning, he *almost* seems like a normal guy. Then he goes and takes a date to the porno theater. And the ending was definitely all in his head. A random taxi driver shoots 3 people in a brothel--I doubt the cops would assume that he was being heroic. But maybe, hopefully, the cops returned Iris to her parents. Also, I couldn't help but think of the OG Freaky Friday. Jodie Foster was in that movie around this time too. Add that one to the watchlist, since they just came out with a new one.

Joe Blankenship

Yeah. It's certainly not my first pick if I'm in the mood for Scorsese. It's good, but not one you can watch casually.

Luis Fernandez

I dig this one. If you rewatch The Watchmen you can see the influences Travis Bickle had on the Rorschach character. I give big kudos to Cybil Shepherd's stylist in this one. She looks fantastic in every scene. You should also check her out in The Last Picture Show (1971). By "her" I mean Cybil, not her stylist. Not sure who the stylist was or what else she's done.

Lana Gorgeous

Oh with regard to this film, The Joker character of Arthur Fleck, the Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix was patterned somewhat after Taxi's Travis Bickle. Also in the scene with the man talking about killing his wife in the back seat was none other than director Martin Scorsese in one of his earliest acting debut's. on on a side note actress Jodi Foster was stalked after this movie by John Hinckley who wanted "impress her" by playing out the Taxi character and trying to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. That movie and its aftermath ended up traumatizing her for life https://www.thewrap.com/jodie-foster-stalker-theater-reagan-assassination-john-hinckley/; https://english.elpais.com/culture/2024-06-26/jodie-foster-and-the-trauma-that-has-stopped-her-doing-theater-for-40-years.html ;

I found Taxi Driver to be dark, dreary, and depressing. I like watching movies that make me feel better after I’ve seen them and this wasn’t one of them. I think this is a prime example of when critics got it wrong. There are other movies that covered the same topics but were much better made.

If anybody needs it, I've got a code for a digital version of this.
