It's almost October, and you know what that means... I'll finally watch a few not-TOO-scary movies! I love this time of year, but I certainly don't love this part! But here we go... give me some not-so-scary movie recommendations for October! I'm already planning on watching:

The Addams Family (1991)

Zodiac (2007)

Shutter Island (2010)

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

So far we have a couple of comedies and a couple of thrillers! Comment below your recommendations for some horror/thrillers that you think I can handle! And if horror isn't your thing, don't worry (it's certainly not my thang either). I'm also planning on watching two Bond movies in October, and I'll be continuing with more Ted Lasso!

Comments

Fawks

Zodiac isn't scary but it has one of the most disturbing scenes in any movie.

ItzE99

The Witch (2015)

Supr

What We Do In The Shadows is amazing! You'll definitely love that one

axr714

THE SUBSTANCE (2024), which very heavily recommended and a thematically perfect fit for the month.

Archive23

Freaky (2020) A horror/comedy for those who want a spook and a laugh 😆 A mix of Freaky Friday with a slasher like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees.

Randee Carreno

"Night of the Comet"(1984), "IT: The 2-part Mini-Series"(1990), "IT"(2017", and the 2019 sequel "IT: Chapter 2". And I don't remember, did you watch the original 1984 "A Nightmare on Elm Street" last year?

KingGoji94

I think you would have fun with the final destination movies. Old school horror the omen shouldn't be to bad. Since you watched the first one psycho 2 is actually good. Not sure what else to reccomend. I would reccomend the exorcist, Texas chainsaw massacre but I know that's not happening lol

Joe Cross

Something Wicked This Way Comes 1983. It’s slated to be added to Disney+ in October so it’ll finally be widely available

Alex Tan

Happy Tuesday, Addie. I'm actually excited for this time of year. Again, my girlfriend & I are horror movie fans. So here are my suggestions: I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998), and I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025). Jennifer Love Hewitt is a scream queen here. #IKWYDLSForAddieCounts I also suggest Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000), Scream 4 (2011), Scream (2022), and Scream VI (2023). #MoreScreamForAddieCounts I'm also looking forward to The Addams Family (1991), Zodiac (2007), and Shutter Island (2010), three of the Scare-A-Mounts (Paramount Pictures Horror/Halloween movies). #ScareAMountForAddieCounts

Billy Dancel

Young Frankenstein (Comedy) A Quiet Place 2 (with Camilla, she hasn’t seen it yet)

HaikenEdge

Dredd, and The Raid Duology are great action thrillers. John Wick before John Wick.

justin swan

Shutter Island is one of my favorite movies ! ... Could you please add: The Others (2001) to your list's please :) ... Have a good day everyone !

firegrilled

In that case, I have a few scary/not scary recommendations: The Monster Squad (my #1 recommend) Ernest: Scared Stupid Hocus Pocus (not scary, but Halloween—y) The Craft

BND

Sleepy Hollow (1999) The Frighteners (1996) Gremlins 2 (1990) The Blob (1988)

pickupthepieces

The Frighteners (1996) with Michael J. Fox. Nice mix of comedy and horror movie elements. Not too scary.

Tom W.

Zodiac will seriously give you nightmares. Too real.

Luis Fernandez

- Trick 'r Treat (2007), a series of short stories, all fun but none too scary - The Universal monster films: Dracula (1931), The Wolf Man (1941), Frankenstein (1931) Bride of Frankenstein (1935), etc. These are plot driven and calm by today's standards so you'd enjoy them. - An American Werewolf in London (1981). Scariest on my list but still not very scary at all. Has nice funny moments. Brilliant practical effects.

Justin

Took one of my picks. 😆

Dean J

The Haunting (1963) Rosemary's Baby (1968) An American Werewolf in London (1981) Poltergeist (1982)

The Dude Abides

She asked for scary movies, not action movies

Justin

Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp as Icabod Crane. Directed by Tim Burton, music by Danny Elfman I believe. A rather good twist on the original story.

HaikenEdge

They're claustrophobic and they're written for audiences to worry whether the protagonists are going to live through the movie. That there's a lot of high quality action doesn't make them not thrillers.

Evan

Arachnophobia and Something Wicked This Way Comes

carbsix

The Omen 😬

The Dude Abides

Lords of Salem House of 1000 Corpses The Devil’s Rejects Hellraiser The Evil Dead Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn Army of Darkness I don’t think these movies are scary at all so you will probably find them mildly scary

carbsix

Sssssss (1973) 🤣

Doug

Hi Addie, here are some of my top horror suggestions - The Wicker Man (1973) - Carrie (1976) - The Omen (1976) - An American Werewolf in London (1981) - Interview With The Vampire (1994) - Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) (this one is a horror comedy parody) - Let The Right One In (2008) - Drag Me to Hell (2009) - The Cabin in the Woods (2012) Plus a couple of scarier ones that I really liked but be warned if you watch them - 28 Days Later (2002) - Hereditary (2018)

Ian Forbes

The Monster Squad (1987) Army of Darkness (1992) Both with lots of comedy and good for relief from anything scary.

Adrian Duenas

A double dose of spider movies: Arachnophobia (1990) and Eight Legged Freaks (2002) Also Final Destination in honor of its 25th anniversary

Alex Tan

The Frighteners actually came out in 1996.

Quantum Unicorn

I think Cabin in the Woods would be a good option for you! It's more like a parody on horror movies, but still a few horror elements. I don't watch/like horror, but love this movie 🙂.

Doug

Young Frankenstein is great but unfortunately it’s not available currently on any major streaming service in the US because of some licensing issue or other.

PaulChristopher

There is a parody Dracula movie from the 1970s called "Love at First Bite" that is fun to watch and available on YouTube for free. It has some racism, fairly typical for the 1970s, but it's a small part of the whole.

ButtercupsTrueLove

Pretty happy with the four picks that Addie has already mentioned. This is not a suggestion for an October movie pic but a mention of "Dark Shadows" (2012), a movie loosely based on a daytime soap opera that was about a vampire. The premise was as odd as it sounds and pretty tame since it was a soap. The movie adaptation has a very good cast but in my opinion the famed director couldn't decide whether he wanted to make a tragic drama or a wacky comedy. Has anyone else seen "Dark Shadows"?

Justtired

• Doctor Sleep (2019) sequel to the shining • Get Out (2017) • The Cabin in the Woods (2011) • Arsenic & Old Lace (1944) more funny than scary • Ready or Not (2019)

Billy Dancel

That’s right. She has likely mentioned that and it went in one ear and out the other.

Randolph Tirazona

Ollie told me "All the Adam's Family" movies!!! Yeah!

Steve SG-1

Final Destination (2000) Resident Evil (2002) Late Night with the Devil (2023) Weapons (2025)

ButtercupsTrueLove

Some of the comments are already hinting at what's to come in some of Addie's upcoming watchalongs. I really wish you'd resist the temptation to build expectations in a movie that is already selected for a reaction video. All that does is to make the first-time viewer try to anticipate what's about to happen in every tense scene. Thank you for your consideration in advance.

Baldemort

I have one "Not to scary movie" a movie called "cloverfield" (2008) youd love how this movie was filmed.

Andrew Storing

The Good Son (1993), wouldn’t say it falls under horror or is to scary but thriller like.

Flounder

Please! Watch JACOB’S LADDER! Based on the Tibetan book of the dead, plenty of creepiness and jump scares, and TIM ROBBIN’S BEST PERFORMANCE EVER. It really is a beautiful film; a must-see.

Duane Klaus

I hate scary movies as well. Poltergeist (1982) is scariest I ever want to see. Knights Moves (1993) Mystery/Thriller. But only if you can find it. And if you are going to watch The Addams Family (1991) you also need to watch the sequel Addams Family Values (1993)

Doug

FYI If I remember right Addie mentioned elsewhere probably watching Addams Family for October and then Addams Family Values in November (since it's kind of got a Thanksgiving-ish setting)

Doug

It's not my favorite Tim Robbins movie (that would be Shawshank Redemption followed by Bull Durham) but Jacob's Ladder is definitely an interesting movie and fits October scary movie season! 👍

Doug

Wow, I totally forgot about Love at First Bite, that's a bit of a deep cut but a funny movie if I remember right. 👍

David

The Witches (1990) is on theme, but is more fun than scary. Also, Edward Scissorhands is a classic.

Doug

Ooh, Hotel Transylvania is a great pick!

Jon Anderson

I'm going to suggest a couple of old ones that are favourites of mine. The Wicker Man (the 1973 original, avoid the remake) is more mystery than horror. And if you're in the mood for a horror comedy, Theatre of Blood (1973) is a hoot, and a great introduction to the legendary Vincent Price.

Andy Munden

I'd recommend Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp, and the Nightmare Before Christmas

StonedTrunks

The Evil Dead by sam raimi, who you might remember as the director of the original spider-man trilogy and dr strange 2

Philip Davetas

Let's go extremely wild. EVIL DEAD RISE. You don't need to watch the others. But I'm scared it'll fuck you up too much.

Chris Gentry

You should watch It: Chapter One (2017). It takes place in the 80s and revolves around a group of kids giving it a Stranger Things vibe that could make for a good reaction.

Kevin B.

I agree with every movie on here haha

David Lucas

These don’t seem too scary to me, so I’d like to recommend them for October. After all, we can save the real fright for Halloween! 🎃 The Village 2004 - Bryce Dallas Howard & Joaquin Phoenix Totally Killer 2023 - Kieran Shipka Happy Death Day 2017 - Jessica Rothe No One Will Save You 2023 - Kaitlyn Dever

Alex Tan

My girlfriend & I saw that movie in the theater and we both enjoyed it. #EvilDeadRiseForAddieCounts

Pendragon1951

When the topic of scary movies come up I always think back to those Saturday afternoons when there was always a monster movie on like The Thing from another world 1951, The Beast from 20k fathoms, Forbidden Planet, The Beast with 5 fingers, Murder in the Rue Morgue, Phantom of the opera, non of which would be classified as such today because no ones head goes flying off. In those days things were implied, you didn't have to see it to be scared of it, but in any case these are my selections for you addie all of which would fit you scary not too scary requirements:)

Ghost, Death becomes Her

Mary W

The Adam’s Family

Duane Klaus

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure how to reply to this without spoiling anything so I'll keep it to myself.

Salsa Shark

There is an early 80s movie called Private Eyes that would be perfect for you in October. Tim Conway and Don Knotts. I watch it every October and even showed my kids when they were younger!!! A perfect Addie Halloween suggestion... I hope you check it out

Salsa Shark

Nice pull!!!!! I love that movie but always forget about it!!!

justin swan

I think she would really like Death Becomes Her ! :)

justin swan

Another one I think you would really like is: Interview With The Vampire !

Jeff I.

Yes, she has to see Weapons sometime! It's so good from the writing to the editing and the acting. It relies more on tension/dread than jump scares (though there are a few).

Jeff I.

Hereditary and The Witch are both must see horror movies! Two of the best in modern times, IMO.

drew

fright night from 1985 even with some scary momments but its more funny than scary

Have you seen Arlington Road? Tim Robbins and Jeff Bridges. Really good suspense thriller. And even more relevant now than when it was made.

Nope (2022) - suspense/mystery The Lighthouse (2019) - eerie/weird

Tim Boxall

Crikey! Hellraiser as a not-so-scary for Addie?! Well, that's just your opinion, man...

John W Foster

Love Late Night With the Devil so much!

Alex Tan

Yes! That's my favorite Reese Witherspoon movie. #FearForAddieCounts

Jasbro

It Follows and Happy Death Day are great movies and not too scary.

Flounder

Please! We would love to see your reaction to JACOB’S LADDER! Based on the Tibetan book of the dead. Plenty of creepiness and jump scares for Halloween. My favorite TIME ROBBIN’S performance. Please!

Joe Blankenship

Rocky Horror Picture Show, if ya haven't seen it.

Robert Lemond

Poltergeist(1982) Rosemary’s Baby(1968) The Omen(1976) Carrie(1976) American Psycho(2000)

Robert Lemond

That might scare her more than The Shining(1980) 😳

Theater of Blood is a good one.

Harry S

Arsenic and Old Lace is a good one.

Harry S

I used to watch the old soap as a kid, the remake, and I liked the movie.

Harry S

Night of the Comet in a good one.

Alex Tan

I second Weapons (2025)! I plan on watching that movie with my girlfriend. She wants to watch that movie too. #WeaponsForAddieCounts

Daniel Lowther

How about Hannibal...the tv series, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy. Yes, I know it's not a movie, and I doubt you'd have time/want to commit to the whole series, but I highly recommend it: it's more of a psychological horror/thriller, than an out-and-out horror, so it's not too scary, which I'm sure you'll appreciate. It's also beautifully shot, and has excellent performances from the whole cast, especially its main 2 leads. I know it probably won't make the list, but just thought I'd give it a shout out, as it deserves it for how fantastic it is.

Harry S

Comic Horror Movies, Arsenic and Old Lace 1944. The Old Dark House 1963. The Ghost and Mr Chicken 1966. The Nightmare before Christmas 1993. Dark Shadows 2012.

Harry S

Not too scary. The Bad Seed 1956. The Little Girl that lives down the Lane 1977. Fright Night 1985.

MrAustincummings

The Others with Nicole Kidman. Period piece, couple jump scares, spooky house, spooky people.

MrAustincummings

I suggested The Others, but this would be dope too. Forgot about that voodoo movie.

MrAustincummings

Loved The Ghost and Mr Chicken when I was a kid.

MrAustincummings

Those guys that did super troopers made a horror comedy called Club Dredd. It's hilarious.

Alex Tan

She has seen The Shining (1980). It scarred her. She's also seen A Quiet Place (2018).

MGCR

Sweet. Two down, 29 more to go.

BJ Stephens

I'd like to recommend a thriller called Identity (2003). It's even got a bit of spooky stuff going on that makes it pretty fitting for October IMO.

Joeheg758

Definitely watch Poltergeist. I'd also second Cabin in the Woods (co-written by Joss Whedon.) Another one that's not overly scary is Creepshow (1982).

Gary Brown

Addie, i have some Addieween movie ideas: The Craft, Scream 2, Beetlejuice, Paranorman, Goosebumps movie, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Carrie(1976 version), Christine. Wrong turn, and maybe Doctor Sleep (Excellent sequel to The Shining).

Milton Reduxed

Comedy Horrors: • Critters (1986) • Night of the Comet (1984) • The Blob (1988) • Return of the Living Dead (1985) • Chopping Mall (1986) • The Stuff (1985) Seasonal October Movies • Ed Wood (1994) — Tim Burton & Johnny Depp (spooky but not scary) • Matinee (1993) — Family friendly film about a traveling horror movie showman

Josh McHugh

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) It's an animated adaptation of "The Wind in the Willows" followed by an adaptation of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" Skip ahead to the second feature, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", it's cute and a bit scary.

The Dude Abides

I guess that depends on the viewer, but I don’t think they’re that scary

Alexander George

World War Z -- starring Brad Pitt; now it features zombies so there will definitely be jump scares but it is not as gory as you may think. For a Halloween Comedy movie might i suggest the sequel to Zombieland.

MrAustincummings

Matinee is a movie you can watch anytime. It's a masterpiece.
