Here's the full length reaction to One Battle After Another, the winner of our Best Picture Nominee poll! This movie was such a wild ride! I believe this is the first Paul Thomas Anderson movie I've watched. What other movies of his do you recommend? F1 was only a few votes behind in the poll, so I'm planning on watching that later this month as well. Enjoy!

Boogie Nights next! Magnolia is also great

XanderWhat

There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights would be great PTA movies to react to. Then if you like those, maybe Magnolia

Happy Friday, Addie. I'm so glad that you watched One Battle After Another (2025), this year's Oscar-winning movie. My best friend & I saw it in IMAX 1.90:1 and we both enjoyed it. This is also my favorite PT Anderson movie. I have it on Blu-ray and I'm definitely upgrading to the 4K Steelbook in June. Viva La Revolución! ✊

On a heartbreaking note, when this film won the Best Picture Oscar, one of the producers of the film (Adam Somner) won his Oscar posthumously, becoming only the 2nd ever posthumous winner in that category (after Sam Zimbalist for BEN-HUR (1959)). Somner died of cancer in November 2024 (shortly after filming wrapped), and he was also the film's assistant director (his AD credits list are insane, working with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese and more).

Here's a technical fun fact: 70-80% this movie was shot on a film format called VistaVision, which has the 35mm movie film running sideways with 8 perforations of hi-res film stock capture, just like with still photography 35mm film, especially with those disposable Kodak film cameras. During its heyday, the first movie to shoot in VistaVision was White Christmas (1954) while the last one was One-Eyed Jacks (1961). It was recently used to shoot The Brutalist (2024). Yorgos Lanthimos used it on 95% of Bugonia (2025) after having used it on a scene in Poor Things (2023), Emerald Fennell used it to shoot the wide shots and landscapes of "Wuthering Heights" (2026), Alejandro González Iñárritu used it on his upcoming movie Digger (2026) with Tom Cruise, and more recently, Sabrina Carpenter used it on her music video for House Tour, the penultimate song from her Man's Best Friend album. Alfred Hitchcock and DP Robert Burks used it to shoot To Catch a Thief (1955), The Trouble with Harry (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Vertigo (1958) and North by Northwest (1959). It was revived by ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) for use to shoot the VFX material for the Star Wars trilogy, as well as the Back to the Future, Jurassic Park & Spider-Man trilogies, alongside Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Death Becomes Her (1992), Casper (1995), Jumanji (1995), Twister (1996), Men in Black (1997), The Matrix (1997), The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and Pearl Harbor (2001), just to name several that come to my mind. DreamQuest also used it for the VFX in Con Air (1997) & Armageddon (1998) and Sony Pictures ImageWorks used it for the VFX in Speed (1994).

Happy Friday, Addie! 😊 This was my top pick for the Academy Award 'Best Picture'. Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today & a great weekend! 😊

There Will Be Blood and Punch-Drunk Love hands down. Career best performances from Daniel Day Lewis and Adam Sandler.

axr714

Regarding other PTA films, do not miss PUNCH DRUNK LOVE (Adam Sandler's first dramatic role, and the launching pad for more dramatic roles he has been playing lately), and also MAGNOLIA (all-timer performance from Tom Cruise), INHERENT VICE (essentially a slow burn BIG LEBOWSKI), and THERE WILL BE BLOOD (all-timer performance from Daniel Day-Lewis).

Regarding your Best Picture poll, I hope you check out HAMNET. Related to theatre, but recommend both going into it blind AND being emotionally prepared. It won the Best Actress Oscar for Jessie Buckley.

JL_83

might not be as acclaimed as PTA’s other works, but think you’d really enjoy Licorice Pizza; also Sean Penn won his first Oscar for Mystic River, which has a stellar cast so you might want to check that one out

axr714

Contrary to popular belief, LICORICE PIZZA is arguably just as acclaimed (check the critics scores). It is the social media discourse that makes it look like it is not so.

There Will Be Blood...is my favorite from PTA followed closely by Boogie Nights

Thanks for reacting to "One Battle After Another". This is my third time watching it in its entirety and it still feels fresh. I'd like to suggest watching an early P.T. Anderson film, "Hard Eight" (1996), featuring a familiar cast and a wonderful soundtrack. I don't think that DNA paternity comparison tests can produce valid results as fast as shown in the movie but imagine how great it would have been if the old Jerry Springer show had one of those. His guests could have been up out of their seats and getting into fistfights within minutes.

Speaking of Oscar movies... Addie I just heard that The Substance is considered a new year's eve movie... Maybe you could put it in a holiday poll instead of horror. It will have more chances to win 🙏🏼

The ending was setting up to be an unsatisfying finish but the pieces came together. I'm incredibly impressed by Sean Penn's role and his performance. Can't deny he's in great shape at his age. Benicio del Toro's character seemed incredibly unfazed at everything. Just a normal day.

Mister Lou

Sean Penn introduction? You gotta check out I Am Sam and Mystic River! My two personal favorites! He also was on Friends BTW as a Pheobe love interest after she broke him up with her twin.. 😂

XanderWhat

Also fun fact, the camera was restored by Giovanni Ribisi

Addie Counts

OH YEAH! So this is the second thing I've seen Sean Penn in hehe

Doug

Lol, I didn't recognize Tony Goldwyn from Ghost until Addie mentioned it. Man, she HATED his character in that movie! 😄 It also sounds like maybe a Sean Penn poll would be a fun follow-up. He has been in quite a few films, but some to consider include: - Bad Boys (1983) - The Falcon and the Snowman (1985) - At Close Range (1986) - State of Grace (1990) - Carlito's Way (1993) - Dead Man Walking (1995) - Mystic River (2003) - This So Called Disaster (2003) - Milk (2008) - The Tree of Life (2011)

Doug

On a tangent, maybe the most unrealistic thing was all the working payphones Bob kept using. Good luck finding a working payphone randomly on the street in 2026! 😄

Joe Blankenship

off-topic, but are we gonna watch a weed movie for 4/20? Half Baked? Pineapple Express? Harold & Kumar?

John A

Another great reaction channel Sean Penn movie is Mystic River
