Here's the full length reaction to Mortal Kombat (1995)! I saw that a Mortal Kombat movie was coming out this month, so I wanted to see what this was all about! I've played the game before but not enough to be super familiar with the characters. I'm planning on watching the 2021 movie here soon as well. Enjoy!

Happy Wednesday, Addie. It has begun. Let's watch MORTAL KOMBAT!

This movie is pure cheese but it's great.

JL_83

Addie wins…FATALITY! 😂

Franco V.

I'm glad you won't watch Mortal Kombat Annihilation. That one is really bad.

Jasbro

Normally i suggest you watch sequels to most movies that have them, but yea do not watch Annihilation, as someone watched both these movies when they first came out it is an awful movie, i didnt love the 2021 version either but compared to Annihilation its a masterpiece.

Here's my take as a Martial Arts fan: Fight scenes still hold up Robin Shou should have been a bigger star Soundtrack is classic Christopher Lambert loved how he gave Raiden a personality Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (RIP) is gold standard for Shang Tsung Trevor Goddard (RIP) gave Kano his iconic personality Sometimes the stars align and give you pure 90s cheese and I love it!

Oboy. . . you're in for a ride, Addie! And yep, that's Christopher Lambert, who played Connor MacLeod in Highlander, as Lord Raiden. I was hoping you'd recognize Talisa Soto! I first saw her in this, so I had a bit of "what's Kitana doing in a Bond film?" This is largely regarded as the first film adaptation of a video game that didn't completely suck. While fans at the time were rather upset at it being PG-13, when the original video game was so violent it sparked Congressional hearings on the content of video games (because video games are obviously exclusively "for kids," just like comic books), the film is overall pretty good. Many deviations from the source material, but enough of them were improvements that they were backported into the games. If you win as Raiden in the first game, he takes over the Mortal Kombat tournament, and quickly gets bored fighting mortals, so invites other gods, and their battles end up shattering the Earth. This film created the idea that Raiden was the protector of Earthrealm and a guide and mentor for the heroes, which has pretty well stuck. Also, Kano being Australian, and the Liu Kang/Kitana and Johnny Cage/Sonya Blade romances are original to the film. It's also fascinating as kind of straddling two eras: a lot of it borrows from (often cheesy) 70s and 80s martial arts action flicks, but it also makes copious use of the brand-new CGI technology (and the effects have not aged well, and weren't exactly the new gold standard when it was released. . . serviceable for the day, but a bit too ambitious, especially Reptile as a wholly CGI character). But yes, on the whole, it's a mostly enjoyable film, and its flaws actually tend to add to its charm. (It's pretty obvious Linden Ashby and Brigitte Wilson are nowhere near as competent martial artists as Robin Shou, but that's actually a plot point, and the choreography and editing mostly covers up their weak points).

Not even "so bad it's good" bad, just BAD.

Jake Steffen

I love this movie, and the theme still gets me majorly hyped. 2021 is fine, but I loved the new one that just came out

Doug

Lol, to quote Johnny Cage on Dorkly: "Yep, we've got three movies. Mortal Kombat 1995, then nothing, then the 2021 movie, and now the new one." 😄

Doug

Lol, man this movie is cheesy, I still like it though! 😄 That said the soundtrack and Johnny's sunglasses got me in the mood to rewatch Blade. 😎

The Dude Abides

Hold Block and press ⬆️ twice and you can do the fire breath fatality with Scorpion. One of many Mortal Kombat button combos I still remember 😂

The Dude Abides

Nah the sequel is cheese on a scale previously thought impossible

Gabriel Lozano, WLC

The "blood code" for the Genesis version is ABACABB during the intro screen. I still remember that one!

Aaron

Probably more like FRIENDSHIP! for Addie.

Aaron

This is a movie I never thought I would see on this channel TBH. But glad I was wrong.

Chris Capitano

This theme song lives rent free in my heart Haha

Sarah Shelby

This is one of those movies that is a guilty pleasure. Absolutely terrible but just hearing the theme again makes me want to watch it. Even though the CG was primitive, at least Goro was done with practical effects, which I appreciate so much more in the modern era. The banter still makes me laugh, fight scenes are great, and I'm not complaining about all the muscles!

David Lonewolf Wright

All of my video game friends and I loved this movie. We knew it wasn't a great movie, but it was fun... and we constantly played this soundtrack all the time. Yeah, jumping straight to the modern ones is the right call.

Lanny Stanfield

I remember being in the theater with my friends. We sat in the front row and cheered at every single reference to the game. Not exactly high cinema, but a guilty pleasure.

Franco V.

Addie you watched Project Hail Mary! Can't wait for the reaction!

Joe Blankenship

11 year old me loved this movie. It's not great, but it's good cheesy fun and it's got some decent fight scenes.

JBK405

This movie is awful…AWFULLY GOOD! Hey-o! This and “Street Fighter” always get that same response from me.
