Here's the full length reaction to The Last Samurai! I'm so glad I walked into this movie without knowing anything about it. Tom Cruise's performance in this one really surprised me since I've only seen him in the Top Gun movies. Enjoy!

Happy Friday, Addie. I'm definitely watching this movie tonight. BTW, if you're reading this, I was in Central Park when I typed this.

Ah yes, the Tom Cruise long hair decade. He looks great with long hair.

...and if you have seen the Disney Channel Original Movie Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior (2006), then Shin Koyamada, who played Shen, is in this one. He plays Katsumodo's son, Nobutada.

This is a great segue into the 2013 Keanu movie 47 Ronin 👍

Chip MC

Oh i do love this movie. Hans Zimmer’s score, Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe’s deep and soulful performances. So good. Looking forward to this later.

Happy Friday, Addie! 😊 This is one of my favorite of Tom Cruise's fairy recent movies. Although it has been a while since I've seen it. What I do remember I really liked. Looking forward to revisiting this movie later this evening. Two other great Tom Cruise movies that I highly recommend are: "The Outsiders" from 1983 and "Cocktail" from 1988. Have a great day and weekend! 😊

...and also all six Mission: Impossible movies.

Speaking of Edward Zwick, I also suggest Glory (1989), Legends of the Fall (1994), Courage Under Fire (1996), The Siege (1998), Blood Diamond (2006), and Defiance (2008).

Great reaction! I hadn't watched this one in a while and that's always fun. The scene near the beginning when he says the troops aren't ready, and then challenges the trainee to shoot him to prove it, took me to Mathew Broderick in Glory (1989), I would definitely vote for that one. Other big names and academy performances as well, I just don't want to say who because it's fun to me when a reactor recognizes their newly favorite actors in a movie,

TheGuy

I'd throw in Born On the Fourth of July, Rain Man, and The Color of Money. Those are also great examples of earliesh Tom Cruise.

This movie is so stunning in so many ways. I first rented to DVD and after returning it I bought my own copy. All of the Japanese actors and even the historians happy and grateful that this kind of story was made about the Samurai. I believe that when Algren learned how to speak Japanese, it was not to impress them, but totally out of respect. My two favorite lines are, “I will tell you how he lived.” and “I do know it is here, that I have known my first untroubled sleep in many years.” (That’s the kind of peace we all hope to find) This was a fantastic way to start the weekend. Take care, Addie!! I’m happy that Ollie popped in for a quick visit 🐶

SquaredSpekz

He was asking about the 300 Spartans. When Algren said, "Dead to the last man, he meant the Spartans". So basically they would lose. That's why he smiled. Honourable death in battle.

DaftBasterd

This is one of my favorite movies, I've watched it countless times, and I tear up every time. The music, the acting, the editing, the cinematography, the sound design, they're all so amazing, you just can't help it!

This was a great reaction, Addie! I visited Japan back in 2018. It is such a beautiful country and culture. I recommend to anyone to put a visit there on their bucket list.

Don't forget "Risky Business," basically his star-making role. Also, I'd watch "The Hustler" (1961) before "The Color of Money," since the latter is actually a sequel to the former.

Gideon James

Addie, the Jedi and Star Wars were the influenced by the Samurai.

Pokeysaurus

Basically the Age of Chivalry in general. The relationship of the Samurai to war and economics in Feudal Japan was extremely similar to the same with Knights in Feudal Europe, and those ideas were borrowed upon heavily.

Sabrecho

Incidentally, the Japanese Kanji (that single character word on the scroll) that Higen gave Algren when they left for Tokyo is "Samurai".

2026-09-06 15:00 Why would he apologize to her? It was war — he was defending himself

You can be sorry for the consequences of your actions even if what you did was was justified, that's fairly basic empathy

I enjoyed the reaction. Katsumoto on several occasions contemplated on killing himself (seppuku ritual) as the honorable exit. Algren told him the story of the battle of Thermopylae to convince him to die in battle instead. I recommend the movie '300' (2006) a very iconic film.

he wasn't apologizing for defending himself, he was more apologizing for dirtying the floor and for smelling pretty bad. You know, he was apologizing for being an imposition and by being there in that house. When not in battle you try to behave better.
