Help me choose a sci-fi/action movie to watch next!

Chip MC

i hope blade runner takes this one. it’s undoubtedly top 3 greatest sci-fi of all time and its influence on the genre, as a whole, is remarkable.

Randee Carreno

Happy Tuesday, Addie! 😊 Great sci-fi movie choices for this poll. For me it was a three way tie between "Blade Runner", "Armageddon", and "Starship Troopers". "Blade Runner" was my final pick because of...Harrison Ford, and because I haven't seen that one in a long time. Have a great day today! 😊

Patrick Egan

Blade Runner is a classic that you should definitely watch at some point, and I think you’ll have fun watching Demolition Man. But Dune is definitely my pick to watch first, it’s incredible and Part Two is almost here :)

Rich

Great choices. Picking one was difficult

Gcvftw

Demolition Man is amazing social commentary.

DazzMetalStorm

I'm surprised to see Armageddon voted low.

Alex Tan

Happy Tuesday, Addie. All are great choices but my votes go for Armageddon (1998, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Michael Bay), Edge of Tomorrow (2014, with Tom Cruise), and Dune (2021).

Fawks

I think it's just played. Played but not infinitely rewatchable.

Alex Tan

Speaking of Michael Bay, I also suggest Bad Boys (1995), The Rock (1996), Pearl Harbor (2001) and Bad Boys II (2003), all produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, as well as The Island (2005), Transformers (all five films), Pain & Gain (2013), 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016), 6 Underground (2019) and Ambulance (2022). #MoreMichaelBayForAddieCounts

Alex Tan

DazzNovaNation, me too. IMO, I definitely find Armageddon (1998) totally rewatchable.

Alex Tan

I second Armageddon (1998).

Mr. Writhms

As an avid SCI-Fi geek, I suggest watching them ALL. And BLADE RUNNER is sci-fi staple. You have to get to that one eventually, especially since the sequel is entirely excellent as well.

Richard Maurer

The fact that anything is beating Dune (21) is just sad. The greatest Sci-fi movie ever taken from the greatest sci-fi Books ever - basically the Lord of the Rings of science fiction. No accounting for taste I guess.

David Crabtree

Top choices: 1) Armageddon (by a mile) 2) Starship Troopers 3) Demolition Man 4) Edge of Tomorrow

Eddie

Michael Bay movies just seem all the same to me. Armageddon is one of the first ones so it seems like he used it as a blue print for all his future movies. It's explosions, jokes, moment protagonist realizes that this is a serious situation, more explosions, more jokes, and a bigger explosion just in case.

Brian Leonard

Out of the movoes listed, I have only seen Armageddon.

Eddie

Dune is on my watchlist, it's just so long though. I'll make an effort to watch it so I can decide to vote on it next time.

Bryan Fritchie

Edge of Tomorrow, Demolition Man, Starship Troopers.

matthew james Stromberg

If you do Armageddon in future also do deep impact they literally came out around same time and both are good imo

PHILLIP CORNISH

100% With you. Armageddon is class, Some other great films too. Shocked at what's winning but Addie does sometimes watch two from the same poll so fingers crossed 🙏😘

Rich

2.5 hours is too long?

Alex Tan

...and if you do Oppenheimer (2023), also do Barbie (2023) as well.

xBATx

Might I recommend, along the lines of Armageddon, the (slightly) more scientifically accurate Deep Impact (1998).

sarCC

Starship Troopers is an excellent follow-up to Total Recall. Robocop is definitely the better movie, but Troopers is spacey like Recall, so it makes for a natural transition.

Alex Tan

I see your frustration here. When Addie did the Steven Spielberg poll, Ready Player One won. My guess, most people on her Patreon community just wanted to see her squirm when she got to The Shining sequence, since that movie LITERALLY scared the crap out of her, when she said to suggest not-so-scary horror movies for Halloween and to not steer her into anything too scary for her. Another notion with trends occur when Remember The Titans won her Denzel Washington poll. Turns out, nobody has even heard of Crimson Tide (1995) or Man on Fire (2004). If a Christopher Nolan poll was posted, chances are that Inception (2010) would win with The Prestige (2006) being the runner-up. I would love to see Addie watch more straight pure action thriller movies like The French Connection (1971), Black Rain (1989), The Fugitive (1993), Speed (1994), The Rock (1996), Con Air (1997), Ronin (1998), Enemy of the State (1998), Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000), The Fast and the Furious (2001), The Bourne Identity (2002), Tenet (2020), and The 355 (2022), even though she's more drawn to anything sci-fi or fantasy themed.

Alex Tan

Hear, hear. It's a very underrated Disney sci-fi movie that's directed by Andrew Stanton, the director of WALL-E (2008). I would also like to throw in The Black Hole (1979), Dinosaur (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Treasure Planet (2002) and Tomorrowland (2015). They're all very underrated Disney sci-fi movies.

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

Hi Addie, may I suggest for one of these polls in future, the 1998 film (Soldier) starring Kurt Russell. Also, the following films1972 (Silent Running) starring Bruce Dern, 1976 (Logan`s Run) starring Michael York & Jenny Agutter, 1973 (Westworld) starring Yul Brynner & 1975 (Rollerball) starring James Caan.

Luis Fernandez

"Logan's Run" is the sexiest movie ever! Sorry, I'll shut up now :D

Michael Bergeron

These are all great movies in their own right. Watch all eventually. I think Blade Runner and Dune are the best two, but they also might be more serious drama sci fi movies, where all the others have more comedic moments and can be more fun. But again all are great.

Andre Agog

Personally I'm disapointed to see Edge of Tomorrow winning 'cause it's honestly the only one there not worth watching IMO. Would have loved to see Addie's reaction to Starship Troopers or Dune.

Aaron Taft

Blade Runner is quite possibly my favorite move of all time. I also Love Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick

Fawks

Fun hater alert. It's the only one that likely won't get a Criterion release but it's a legitimately good and fun film. Clearly not as underrated as it used to be, it's definitely picked up in popularity over the years. With the exception of the Michael Bay movie, the rest are film school deeper meaning James vs Cinema reaction type of movies. I'd rather watch Addie react to things happening in a movie than react to cinematography.

Billy Dancel

More Tom Cruise. Dune would be a great movie when the second part is available. I think votes for Starship Troopers is mainly to gross Addie out.

Byrd N. Hand

I'll admit I'm not really into 'Tom Cruise the Action Star,' but if you're talking about movies like "Risky Business," "Legend," "Rain Man," "Jerry Maguire," "Eyes Wide Shut," "Magnolia," etc., then I'm on board.

Richard Maurer

Deep impact is much better - and it's not exactly a great movie. But compared to Armageddon it's a masterpiece.

Richard Maurer

@ Alex They should have combined the two to make one super movie - Oppenheimer vs Barbie.

Alex Tan

I'm in favor of Tom Cruise as an action star in movies like the Mission: Impossible & Jack Reacher film series, Days of Thunder (1990), Minority Report (2002), War of the Worlds (2005), Knight and Day (2010), Oblivion (2013) & American Made (2017). His dramatic roles are great too but as an action junkie, I'm still more drawn to his action movies. Hopefully Addie gets to the two aforementioned film series when she wraps up X-Men & John Wick. #MoreTomCruiseActionMoviesForAddieCounts

ButtercupsTrueLove

I've watched "Minority Report" many times since its availability on disc and streaming and for a science fiction slash crime procedural film that is 20+ years old it holds up very well with both its compelling story and its visuals.

Billy Dancel

What I should have said/what I meant is that with EoT in the lead, it looks like we're getting more Tom Cruise. Maybe Addie will post a TC poll.

Luis Fernandez

If Addie does a TC poll, I'd support including "The Outsiders" (1983). He only has a small role in that but I've been wanting to find an excuse to rewatch it. Heh.
