Well, Youpi essentially found out that he can use his emotions to release more power than he otherwise can. And that controlling his emotions properly can be a valuable asset in combat. As for the pride thing... it's not just a Japanese culture thing. Women can be like it as well, but... it's a trait mostly found among men. There's simply times when a man has to act. It might better or smarter not to act, but for the sake of his own sense of pride, he has to act. Kinda like when people lose their crap completely when someone says something bad about their mother. That kind of thing.
