This moment was so impactful, and your reaction to it was as good as expected. Yes, I imagine that Jinshi has a level of decorum that he has to maintain, that he can't do anything that would bring shame upon the dynasty,, so though he might want to he is unable to run with her to get help. Of course he could probably have commanded someone to rush her to get help, but I imagine there's a couple of reasons he didn't do that either. The first, purely emotional reason is that in that moment Maomao must have looked so weak and fragile to Jinshi that he was afraid to let go of her, that the moment he did she would break and die, so instead he continued carrying her while silently praying that the gods watching over her would keep the thread of her fate unbroken a while longer. The second, more practical reason was that she had just literally risked life and limb to save him from an apparent assassination attempt. While they were both still alive, the truth is that the assassin(s) could still be around & they would surely conclude that Jinshi had survived because of Maomao, and that if they had any chance of succeeding next time let alone not being identified and executed before they can try would be to ensure that Maomao's injuries were fatal. Therefore, without anyone nearby that Jinshi could definitely trust he took charge over her alone. Anyway, that's my take on the matter, can't wait for your next reaction.

The Lakan's face to the official who hit Mao mao is one of my favorite moments to understand a little about him.
