Something else to bear in mind regarding Zuko's banishment - the Avatar was thought to have disappeared, never to be seen again. So when the Firelord sent Zuko to search for him, he was essentially sending him on a wild goose chase

I love re-watching Avatar with your reactions. After certain episodes I wanna watch the next one but it's been so long since i've watched it, it's worth the wait for your reaction. This episode was no exception. Watching Zuko's heartbreaking backstory and Aang's with you was worth the wait.

Here's a little trivia. Did you notice how none of the other kids have arrow tattoos? That's because only masters get tattoos. Aang is already an Airbending master. This isn't a spoiler since this was only mentioned in lore stuff outside the show.

My favorite part of this episode is the contrast between Zuko asking his father for forgiveness and getting burned for it, versus apologizing to Uncle Iroh and being forgiven

The live action series has a nice little addition to Zuko's backstory, that I wish was part of this. I don't want to spoil it because it's a good moment though, and I think it would add to this moment as well. So maybe keep that in your back pocket if you take on the live action series at some point.

This is one of the episodes that really elevated the whole show for me. It gave so many answers and also set up so much of the future at the same time.

Fun fact: the method in which the monks identified Aang as Avatar is (fittingly enough) based on how Tibetan Buddhist Monks would identify the next reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. Monk Gyatso (Aang’s guardian/Airbending Master) even derives his name from that of the current Dalai Lama: Tenzin Gyatso.

I've never read the comics or did research but I figured that out easily when I watched it for the first time. It's a bit obvious, only the elders have tattoos and the kids are not very good at air bending so that kind of explains the mastery level. Also if you follow martial arts philosophy that also helps lol
