Something most civilians don’t know is how military orders work. You have to follow LAWFUL orders. Unlawful orders you do not. But it goes beyond that. You have a duty to not follow unlawful orders, and if they would have been war crimes, you must report it. It stems mainly from WW2 when German soldiers involved with the holocaust and other atrocities claimed to just be following orders, and that they had no choice. That defense wasn’t accepted, and the allies had to determine who exactly should be held accountable. The Cold War starting right after WW2 meant we needed West Germany as a front line ally and compromises were made, but if you committed war crimes you were tried and sentenced. In order to know which orders are lawful or not, you have to know the laws governing warfare. You guys know I just retired from the Army, but when I was in Basic they spent a whole day (which is a huge block of time in Basic) going over the laws of war. We fall under the Geneva Convention, but there are a lot more laws than that, and you can be charged for violating them. Punishments can be severe, including the death penalty for the worst. The assault on Private Santiago was an unlawful order, and they should have known that. But it’s not always easy to do the right thing, especially when you are conditioned to unquestionably follow orders. In the end, Dawson figures out where he went wrong, and that blindly following flawed human beings unquestionably wasn’t the right answer. He got caught up in the Hoorah and didn’t think about what was morally right.
