in the comics john "henry" Irons was a man whose life was saved by superman. when superman died fighting doomsday Irons became steel to honor his memory and help others a superman would have. in fact until superman came back Steel took over as the focus of superman's side series "Man of steel"

Yeah Steel is a pretty awesome character. The only thing that was missing from his iconic suit was the Superman “S” symbol and the red cape. But granted this was his origin. I’m glad that you finally got to meet Steel. Also after the next episode, I’m so ready for the last episodes of S2. They are some bangers!

He's your friendly neighborhood Steel. One of many heroes inspired by Superman using a technological substitute, and one of the ones who try to take up the mantle on Superman's apparent death. Very excited for Apokolips Now. It should have been the S2 finale.

Steel's such a cool character. He's like a less wealthy Iron Man, but also a nicer guy. Actually, I'm pretty sure John Henry Irons is also pretty wealthy, just not Iron Man wealthy, he was probably making a lot as a contractor under Lex, and he probably has his own business and is an inventor. John Henry Irons the character was named after the American folklore character "John Henry." In American folklore "John Henry" was the strongest railroad worker around and used a big sledge hammer to hammer in railroad ties. I'm forgetting most of the story, but that's where the name of the character comes from.
