Aresia is actually an original character for the show, though she seems to take influence from a character called "Fury" which is likely where the episodes' title comes from. In the comics the original version of Fury was actually Lyta Trevor, the daughter of Earth two's Diana and Steve Trevor. However dc continuity being rebooted in an event called Crisis On Infinite Earths Lyta's "post crisis" history had to be altered to remove the connection to Diana. Instead Lyta was the daughter of Helena Kosmotos, who is revealed to have been the original Fury. It is explained that she lived in Nazi Controlled Greece in 1941. Upon finding out her brother, Michael, was a Nazi collaborating her mother died for a heart attack. Swearing vengeance on her brother and unknowingly invoked the Furies for Greek myth. One of them, Tisiphone, empowered Helena with her with her powers enabling Helena as to take her vengeance on her brother. Eventually she made her way to the US where, inspired by the heroics of other WW2 era superheroes, she choose to use her new powers for good as "Fury". One hero she grew particularly close to was Queen Hippolyta, who had become trapped in the past due to time travel and was operating as a WW2 era Wonder Woman. The two gained a mentor, mentee relationship, with Fury coming to believe Queen Hippolyta was actually the reincarnation of her dead mother. Decades later shed have a daughter who would have a daughter who shed name Hippolyta or "Lyta" for short who in modern day would take up the Fury mantle. Aresia seems to take much influence from the Helena version of Fury, in physical appearance, connection to Queen Hippolyta and some backstory elements (as yes i believe the implication is the flashback in the episode was WW2) An interesting thing about this episode it originally aired much earlier in the watch order due to the studio deciding to swap its place with the "Injustice for all" two parter (lex's injustice gang episodes) so that those episodes could instead air alongside a justice league video game that shared the same name "Injustice for all" in hopes of boosting its sales. This had the consequence of making the Shade's mention of Luthor here confusing in original airing because the episodes he's referencing had not aired yet. Dvds and streaming services now usually correct the mistake and swap the episodes back so now they're in the originally intended order.

This is another of my favorite episodes of JL TAS! I understand what Aresia went through as a child but not ALL men are evil in the world! There are good ones too and some with families and children. That's what she just didn't understand and Queen Hippolyta really should've just told Aresia about how that one man saved her life that long time ago before instead of keeping it from her. Anyway Meg I really hope that after you finish this series you'll then start "Static Shock" next.

As Werewolf mentioned in the comments, Aresia is an original character for the show but is based on two different characters in the comics that go by the name of Fury, which is the name of the episode. I also believe from what I read her name is supposed to be a feminine version of the God of War, Ares. It was nice to see members of Lex Luthor’s Injustice League/Gang again, even though he wasn't there and they had a new member with Tsukuri. They don’t mention it or really show it but according to one of the writers, unlike the other members following Aresia for the purpose of being paid, Tsuruki’s motive for following her was out of romantic feelings for her, even though she did bail on her at the end. Aresia’s motives and actions are definitely both interesting and dark considering what she went through. Batman fighting through the sickness just enough to save the bus from hitting the firefighters just shows how strong his willpower is. That’s one thing I’ve learned about Batman is to never underestimate his willpower but also remember that he is after all still human and can only take so much. J’onn being affected by the disease is something that I have wondered about since he can shapeshift into anyone he wants. So it makes me wonder if he had shapeshifted into a woman, would it have still worked or would he be immune so long as he stays in that form. But this was another amazing episode/episodes. The next one is another awesome one that I can’t wait for you to get to! Also can't wait for whenever you react to Batman vs. Robin as you continue your way through the DCAMU

Attempted global Gendercide. Justice League doesn't play around. I don't think you could get away with having this in a show nowadays for the reasons you spoke of. Extremists like Aresia (I see that name and immediately suspect her of being Ares in disguise) can corrupt even the most noble philosophy, and even some comic writers seem uncomfortable with the Amazonian ethos- possibly another reason why Wonder Woman doesn't get nearly as much material as Batman or Superman. Insane tangent of the day; my first exposure to anything like this was a very obscure source- the first song in the little-known animated David Copperfield film, where Aunt Betsy is very upset that Davy is a baby boy when she wanted to have a niece, and it does include the line 'Don't you know that boys will grow up to be men?!'. However, she gets over it and helps Davy a lot by the end, making me like her character more.

I think Aresia is an example of someone becoming the evil that she was a victim of. She witnessed acts horrific evil at a young age, mistook and distorted Amazonian teaching to believe the cause of that cruelty is males as a whole, and attempted to commit a g*nocide herself as the solution.
