The Umbara Arc

Oh yeah that was my comment about the armor change and the stormtrooper vibes. Cool, little shout out there. Yay!!! A lot of people wonder why the Umbaran soldiers need those space suits on their own planet. According to the writers, they don't need the suits, they wear them because the suits are full of combat drugs that the Umbaran soldiers breath in to make them more aggressive and brave. This isn't mentioned in the episodes because it probably wouldn't have made it past the cartoon network censors. But yeah, those Umbarans are high on angry gas.

I love how there is no joy or usual triumph in the ending like in the previous story arcs. It's like Rex said what was the point of all this. Instead of droids they fought the native Umbarans who willingly joined the separatists and fought tooth and nail in arguable self defense of their world. They lost so many men due to sabotage by Krell and not understanding the environment they are in. This was both tragic and a clear example of the rot setting within the Republic. With both the Jedi and Clones being unknowing champions of said rot all because of Palpatine. Many people jokingly call this battle the Vietnam of star wars and while I won't make that comparison directly you can find many parallels to wars where it's feels so bloody and the sacrifice the soldiers make in it is pointless.

you might appreciate knowing that commander Appo, who im pretty sure appears in this arc for the first time, is a direct ATLA reference! he even has the arrow coming down his helmet

Wow yes, I was just reading about the Vietnam War this morning, and there are a ton of parallels. Thanks for pointing that out!

I loved this reaction and it's probably one of my favorite discussions you 2 have had in the series so far. I have many thoughts lol First some fun facts; Waxer, who died and told Rex that Krell sent them was one of the 2 Clone Troopers in the 212th, Obi-Wan's Batallion, that saved the young Twi'lek girl, Numa, in the Ryloth Arc in Season 1. Waxer and Boil. Waxer also had an insignia of Numa on his armor in remembrance of her. Waxer was also the first character in The Clone Wars that cried tears on screen. Captain Rex actually welded his Phase 1 Visor to the rest of his Phase 2 Helmet, it's really unique in that no other Clone Trooper in the series has done that, it's really cool. Rex does also have some ARC Trooper training as he has a Kama (the black battle skirt) that other Arc Troopers have, Fives has one too once he became an ARC Trooper. It's cool seeing everyone's armor updates too. Other than the helmet Rex also has different pouches and tally marks on his helmet and forearm armor. It's currently unknown what these signify, some people in the fandom have headcanoned them being droids he's killed or perhaps brothers he's lost in this War. My thoughts on how the Clones were acting over the course of this Arc is that it's hard for them to break their programming. We learned in Attack of The Clones when Taun We and Lama Su were explaining to Obi-Wan that Clones were conditioned to follow any Order. And in Clone Cadets we learned that Jedi inspired creative thinking in the Clone Troopers. I think it's almost impossible for them to disobey a direct order from a Jedi, but because of Anakin's influence and probably Ahsoka too they were able to break a bit from their programming and go against orders that are wrong, even when they come from a Jedi. Rex even said that he once believed that being a good soldier meant doing anything they told him and how he doesn't believe that anymore, that you have to make your own decisions. It's a great continuation for his character, I believe when he met Cut Lawquane in The Deserter in Season 2 he was beginning to question what he believes, and in this Arc even moreso. And I love how Fives kinda helped him realize this. Also shoutout to Tup for coming up with the plan to lure Krell to the tentacle creature and stun him, Tup very may well have saved their lives. It's shocking that Krell was just allowed to do all this, Rex's explanation that Krell had authority to administer punishment, like execution, like this is really telling how Clones are treated. Like they don't have rights even though they should. Rex's and Fives's conversation at end is one of my favorites in the series. "What's the point of all of this? I mean, why?" "I don't know sir, I don't think anyone knows. What I do know is that someday this War is gonna end." "Then what? We're soldiers. What happens to us then?"

What I think is very notable about all the clones in this arc is how particularly brutal they can be to the Umbarans. This is the first time the show got the freedom to show a more neutral perspective of what a Republic invasion of a planet is like. Previous seasons still had to adhere to the overall lighter tone so the clones were consistently portrayed in a very positive light even during events such as the 2nd invasion of Geonosis back in season 2. With season 3 introducing darker themes and really skyrocketing TCW's popularity back in the day, the show got alot more leeway by Cartoon Network. The first two seasons are sometimes referred to as the Republic propaganda seasons, while season 3 onwards is basically depicting what the Clone Wars were truly like.

Finally getting caught up after *mumbles* months. I’m sure anything I have to share is woefully out of date, especially after so long. Suffice to say I agree. Glad to see you are sticking with Clone Wars and, even if it takes a while and you are selective, you are happy and enjoy the experience.
