Teen Titans: The Judas Contract

this movie is based on the comic arc of the same name from new teen titans 39-40, tales of the teen titans 41-44 and tales of the teen titans annual 3, all from 1984. This comic is probably most famous for being the story in which Dick became Nightwing for the first time following him quitting leaving the role of robin in new teen titans 39 (with Jason having already taken the robin name in the batman comics of the time). In the comic version dick had taken a leave of absence from the titans when he learns of their kidnapping, and with no longer having the robin suit he makes the new nightwing suit and name to rescue them. The name "nightwing" had been previously used by two other characters: Superman when he visited the bottled kryptonian city of Kandor and Van-Zee a Kandorian Clark passed the mantle onto. Whilst originally Dick's usage of the name was unrelated to the Kryptonian versions many years later it was revealed Dick talked to Clark after quitting Robin and learnt of the name "Nightwing" from him, with it being retconned to be the name of an ancient hero of krypton. Later comics would also establish it to be the name of a Kryptonian God who hunted evil. Tara Markov aka Terra was introduced in new teen titans 26 in at the end of 1982. The movie's version is largely the same as her comic though the movie does a better job of portraying her as a victim of slade as the comic kinda portrays her as unredeemable despite the whole Slade grooming her thing which is apart of the book that hasn't aged well. In the comics she is actually an illegitimate child of the royal family of a fictional eastern European country called Markovia. A character called Geo Force, a member of the superhero team the outsiders, is her half brother. In the comics another character called Terra is introduced later and it was sometimes implied she may be the same Terra with amnesia. The members of the team from the opening flashback who aren't present in the rest of the movie are: Roy Harper AKA Speedy, the sidekick to green arrow. In the comics he was often an ally to the teen titans before officially joining full time in teen titans 19 from 1966. Later he was retconned into being a founding member and has been treated as one ever since. In this movie he's voiced by Crispin Freeman, who voiced the character in another unrelated animation. Bumblebee aka Karen Beecher. Introduced in teen titans 45 from 1976, she has the ability to shrink, shoot energy blasts and fly using wings. She is sometimes credited as being the first black woman superhero in dc comics, though she is technically predated by the Amazon Nubia who is a less traditional superhero. Kid Flash. This one gets tricky as everything from his appearance to his voice actor (who like speedy voices him in another animation) would suggest he's meant to be Wally West, who in the comics is a founding member of the teen titans. However apparently one of the people who worked on the movie confirmed he's actually meant to be a young Barry Allen. This makes no sense to me since it seems silly for Barry to have been on a team with Dick but be shown not to know batman is real in justice league war. And again I don't know why you'd get a previous wally actor to voice a young barry who has never been a titans member in the comics. But that's just my opinion. Unfortunately they never did a third movie which resulted in the some of the things the ending teases never being followed up on so i feel safe going into to them. First and foremost the new girl at the end of the movie is Wonder Girl aka Donna Troy. Beast boy references her identity by saying she's a "wonderful" new addition. In the comic books she is a founding member of the teen titans and the only female member prior to a character called Lilith Clay joining in issue 25. She also has one of the most confusing backstories of all time, one that has changed several times over the decades to be completely different. She was also for a long time unable to appear in on screen dc media due to confusion on who needs to be credited for her creation. This is because for the first 21 issues of teen titans her real identity was never confirmed. You see prior to the teen titans comic the name "wonder girl" was just a name used by Diana when she was a teenager with her at one point time travelling and getting stuck in the future where she meets and fights alongside her adult. When Teen titans started many assumed she was just the time displaced teen Diana, a theory supported by a brief panel of her calling Hippolyta "mother" in the first issue. In issue 22 however its revealed she was an orphan saved from a fire by Diana when she was 2 and taken to be raised on Thymesicra as Diana's sister. In this issue the other titans help her get US citizenship and a name of "Donna Troy". This delayed origin however made the question of who truly created her. The writer of teen titans 1 or the writer of teen titans 22? Or perhaps even the writer who introduced teen Diana? This confusion meant she couldn't appear in on screen media as they were required to credit her creator in credits sequences but they didn't know who legally got that credit. This however was resolved in the early 2010s finally allowing her to appear outside the comics, though still not very often. The man seen waking up in the after credits of the movie, who we saw used for Blood's machine test earlier in the movie, physically resembles Joey Wilson AKA Jericho, one of Slade's son. In the comic version of Judas Contract he and his mother are first introduced and they help dick save the other titans from slade. He has the ability to possess people and control their body from brief periods. In the comic Slade doesn't actually betray Terra with instead Joey using his powers to control Slade and make it look like to Terra he was betraying him, resulting her doing what she does in the movie. Following this story Jericho joins the titans. He is unique in that he is one of the few mute comic book characters, having had his throat slit by kidnappers when he was a child looking to blackmail slade. His injury ultimately caused his mother to divorce slade, and shoot him in the eye which is where his eyepatch comes from in the comics. edit: this is the second after credit scene from the DCAMU not to be followed up on as previously in JL throne of Atlantis the after credit scene has Lex seemingly recruiting Ocean Master for the legion of doom. But then when the legion of doom shows up at the start of JL vs TT Ocean Master is not shown as a member.

Hi new to Patreon. Just gonna be honest I think you should start setting a timer for these movie reactions if this is how you’re gonna do them. It’ll be easier to keep up with what part your reacting to

Good reaction. This is the most well known Teen Titans storyline but also controversial due to the whole Slade/Terra relationship. From what I remember & what you read at the end, the intention was that Terra was written to be a villain in the original story. She never really cared for The Titans despite trying to welcome her to the team. She did die in the comic & the film. The difference is in the comic, she died cause she lost control with her power when trying to kill the team. I think the comic writers clearly didn’t understand that she’s still a victim and manipulated yet state she’s the villain of the story. What George Perez said was gross btw. Later adaptations do make her more relatable/sympathetic. As for Slade, yeah ever since you met him in Arkham Origins I thought about how you will react to that part of his character. Everyone hates him for that yet DC still kept him around after that. When DC reset their timeline (which they do a lot), they tried to avoid that part of his story & eventually turned him more anti-hero but still a villain. His beef with the Titans is more personal in the comics but it does involve his family. The whole thing of being part of the League of Assassins is only in the DCAMU films. He is still their archenemy even though these days he’s also fighting Batman. Most other adaptations of him don’t show the creepy side of him much but even in the Teen Titans animated series, even though it’s a kid show, there’s still some creepy undertones whenever Slade shows up. Still highly recommend the show. Ron Perlman does a fantastic job as Slade.

I also want to talk about the heroes you saw in the beginning. There is Kid Flash who’s usually Wally West who is Barry’s sidekick who later took on the mantle of Flash like in the Justice League show but in this universe, it’s Barry who is still called Flash. Idk why they made the choice to not have it be Wally but ok. There’s Speedy who is Green Arrow’s sidekick, & BumbleBee who think of as DC’s version of The Wasp from Marvel. Both shrink in size and have stingers. The character that replaced Terra at the end is Wondergirl/Donna Troy who is Wonder Woman’s sidekick. In the comics, Donna is one of the OG members of the Titans alongside with Dick’s Robin, Kid Flash, & Aqualad (Aquaman’s protégé). Lastly with Dick’s love life, he’s a ladies man but Barbara & Starfire are his two biggest loves. He was with Kory for most of the 80’s to 90’s but things didn’t work out. Later on, Dick does eventually realize he still loves Barbara and currently, he’s in a serious relationship with her. I like both relationships as I think Dick has chemistry with a lot of characters lol. He’s the goat! 😎
