once you read the killing joke comic id love to recommend a list of barbara gordon comics!! dc editorial at the time was using babs being shot as a way to write her off, and her character was kept from being fridged thanks to writer kim yale! becoming disabled ISNT the end of that persons story, and it isnt the end of barbaras story

I think a lot of people probably warned you about this movie. The second half is better because it’s the comic storyline. The first half with Bruce and Barbara never happened in the comics in fact, in other continuities, they have a father/daughter mentor relationship. The reason for this awkward choice is due to one of the writers being Bruce Timm who is one of people involved in the Animated Series. There is a rumor that he’s the only person on Earth that ships those two while every other fan went eww because of what I said. Lol Ps happy you got to see The Joker’s full origin story.

I was both looking forward but also worried about you reacting to this movie especially the first half. I saw your feelings about the movie in your discord after watching it and you basically said everything I felt after I watched the first time. Granted I haven’t watched this movie since it first came out and only watched snippets of the second half that was actually part of the original story. So being reminded of all that happened in the first half made me sick all over again. Which really sucks cause this version of Joker (at least the one in the original story) is one of my favorites cause it not only dives deeper into the psychology and origin of his character but the story made him feel like a horror movie villain with how unnerving he is. Plus what he does to Barbara, Gordon and even Batman is one of the most cruel and vile things he’s done in the long list of stuff he’s done. The whole romance between Bruce and Barbara is honestly so disgusting and idk why they even decided to add this other than it being Bruce Timm’s sick fantasy. It really sucks that some of these changes ruined most of this iconic and amazing story. It sucks even more that both Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are tied to this movie as well despite it being one of their best performances. I will say Meg, despite DC changing some things within their animated movies, this one is probably the worst of the bunch so I’m glad you got through it since the others apart from maybe Batman: Hush are far better

Barbra having a crush on bruce is fine but being the fact that bruce pretty much adopted her into the bat family, being friends with her dad still is what makes it weird. Now I never read the comic but I belive it ends the same with them laughing at Jokers joke, 2nd half better and I just assumed the 1st half was only a thing to add depth to barbra getting shot cause she's barely in the comic right ?

The Amazing Webhead

Ok so the joke that Joker said in the end was really mostly about him and Batman’s relationship comparing themselves as the inmates escaping the abyss. Bruce being the guy that made it across with the flashlight, and Joker is the one staying behind never gonna leave the insanity. Effectively, Bruce laughing was mostly due to irony. XD

Bruce and Barbara relationship was Bruce Timm's idea so he used that concept in couple of his own productions so it is not trully canon actually

Yeah, I was excited when I first heard that they were going to give Batgirl a prologue in this movie, give her a little more agency in this story, and then… just no…

Superheroes Rock

Yea bruce and barbara’s relationship is not canon to the main dc comic book universe this is just a weird addition to the film that bruce timm added because he has some weird sex fetish

And as far as good batgirl representation outside of the books. Batman the animated series and the batman 2004 show are easily the best two adaptations and she is great in arkham knight as well

There have been 3 people who have held the title of batgirl, but Barbara is the one who has it 99% of the time. Also a couple movies i would very heavily recommend are a death in the family and under the red hood. And for Batgirl specifically, she will eventually appear in the animated series, so you can look forward to that.

One thing about bruce you havent seen a ton of is him working with others, very often its either his way or the high way, you do what he says and follows his plans, or you dont do anything at all, sometimes it works out, other times not so much. Also the Barbara and bruce relationship isnt common but its happened before, its usually in things that bruce tim is involved in because he seems to enjoy the pairing. And as for age, Barbara is in her early 20s here, and bruce is either late 30s or very early 40s, also you were asking about cannon, in DC there is no true cannon, just the main cannon which would be the main comic line, everything else be it movie, show, game or non main universe comic, is just a story taking place in another universe in the DC multiverse

Already made 2 comments but need to say these, the joker has had 3 origin stories technically, but not even he knows which one if any of them are the real one, now plenty of comics will lean more towards one of the 3, changing the story around assuming thats the real one, but its all unknown, and the joke at the end is because both batman and joker are crazy in different ways, and sometimes batman even admits hes crazy and the no killing code is what keeps him controlled, also if you notice, joker stops laughing but batman doesnt, the ending is meant to be ambiguous of if batman finally went through with killing joker after all this or not. Again, apologies for 2 long comments

yeah, this movie is a mess... I was really interested to see your reaction but really sad this was your first real experience with Barbra's story. I saw this movie when it showed in theaters and it's just as bad as I remember. She is my personal favorite in the whole DCU and they did her so dirty in this. The issue is she is intertwined with so much of the universe but there is very little that focuses just on her.  For comics, there are three good places. My personal favorite is the new 52-run they did back in 2013. Although some find issues with her getting back her ability to walk I found the story did a wonderful job going through her whole history. As well as diving into her struggle with all the identities and secrets she has held. I absolutely love the original birds of pray run in 1999 (sorry unlike the recent movie little to no Harley Quinn) but it would be a harder thing to jump into because it involves a lot of the extended DC universe. But it's a great comic that spotlights a lot of women in the DC universe. Basically a team of woman superheroes and villains that Barbra brings together as Oracle to do missions. I think you would personally enjoy batgirl year one, like its namesake it does a great job of introducing how Barba became batgirl. There is a voice-acted motion comic of this available but unfortunately, that's really it when it comes to Barba focus media.

I had to write a comment already at 20 minutes to the show.I am not as familiar with comics of DC as i am with Marvel but i have general knowledge. I do not like romance between Barbara and Bruce. That was unnecessary and weird. But what is true is that Batman is over protective towards every partner he has. As you might remember from Arkham City when Batman did not want Robin get involved. You'll see more of that over protectivness in Arkham Knight. What they also got right that Batman is very emotionless especially in his Batman persona. All light heartness when he appears as Bruce is just an act. Bruce is his mask and Batman his true self. Biggest issue with this particular romance is that Batgirl is like 20 and Bruce at his 40s. He could be Barbaras father. In comics Barbara usually had relationship with Nightwing (Dick Grayson). They're same age and it is much more fitting. But don't worry. Barbara and Bruce do not have thing going on in Arkham Knight. In Arkham series Talia and Catwoman are his main romantic interests.
