iirc there was a point where Bruce asked Dick if he wanted to be officially adopted of not. Bruce was hesitant to make this move because he was afraid of coming across as trying to replace Dick's parents even though Bruce does love Dick as s son.

Bruce always calls Dick his ward but idk honestly if he ever officially did or not. I like seeing that Bruce isn't the perfect parent again with Dick just shutting him out but then showing sweet moments between them so similar and different

re dicks adoption/ward status, in the 80 years since he was introduced, the comics have changed it a few times. im pretty sure the current story is that dick was his ward initially, but he mightve been adopted since then. dick and bruce have a complicated relationship thats part father and son, but also part older and younger brother, and part crime fighting duo.

If you ask me Batman WAS being selfish about Tony Zuco and I ain't buying that excuse he gave at the end. Zuco was Robin's burden to deal with not his!

In the current times and this series, Dick is Bruce’s adoptive son. These other answers are overly complicated for no reason.

Finally the full Robin origin story contrasted with the first (but far from the last) time that Batman and Robin clash over the former's controlling nature, unable to trust others' judgment completely (see also: Arkham Knight). Bruce does indeed adopt Grayson in this continuity. His reason for not always being around to help is being in college during the time of the show.

All four of the Robins have pretty depressing backstories. I think it's a rite of passage at this point.
