Good job Meg! You got everyone's, and the ship's, name right. You're on your game tonight.

So many great character moments in this episode. Holden goes through a lot of growth over the course of the six seasons of this series (and even more in the nine books), but the growth definitely occurs in fits and starts (just like real life). I think he's still pretty traumatized from the genocide he witnessed on Eros and from the decision he was forced to make to blow up the ship of well-meaning but foolish doctors. I think these events have really messed with his head, and he's struggling to find himself again. And Naomi is there to help, but she's got her own issues and her own triggers too. I'm not going to say too much about Amos, because I don't want to spoil anything, but you probably can see where some of this is going; the show isn't exactly subtle about it. Clearly, the things he's describing about bullies and prostitution and everything else he was talking about is something he knows quite well, and he's being triggered as well. But the good thing about Amos is that he understands his shortcomings and afflictions, and self-awareness is a very important component of growth and healing. What I find surprising though is that some people feel that Amos is short on empathy, and that deficit was what made him interested in Cortazar (creepy Protogen Scientist dude). In fact, I think it's almost the opposite; I think Amos has tremendous empathy for people who remind him of himself in some way, and he doesn't always like the way it makes him feel. But he's also smart enough to realize that being without empathy would not be better; it would make him more like the monsters that made him suffer as a child. Something like that. I also love the scene at the water's edge. I say this a lot when commenting on this episode, but I'm going to say it again - Frankie Adams (Bobbie) is not a big name actor with a lot of dramatic roles on her resume, but whoever cast her in this show must have recognized her brilliance nevertheless. When she walks out to the ocean and sees it for the first time, she conveys so very much with just her eyes; it's truly a masterful performance. Combine that with Clinton Shorter's gorgeous score for that scene and... well, every time I watch it, I am reminded at how good this show is at the small moments. The special effects and space battles are awesome for sure, but these quieter moments are also such an important part of what makes this show great. Where'd the vines go? I hope you didn't get rid of them on my account. :)

Bobbie and the ocean scene is still one of my favorites in the series. Frankie was already a seasoned actor by the time she got this role. She spent yrs. as a young actor in a night time soap opera in Australia, but this was her first time acting with a world wide audience. I also love the addition of Cotyar to the series (he only had a small role in book 2). As Avasarala says to him in the 1st episode of this series "you're a first-rate spy with a Robin Hood complex, you like screwing over the powerful and protecting the little guy". Nick Tarabay does such a great job as Cotyar, and his smile is so infectious. Love his relationship with Chrisjen.

Another great reaction. Thanks. I pretty much agree with all the previous remarks by commenters. (I'm late in showing up for this reaction. FWIW "Caliban" is a half human, half monster creature in Shakespeare's "The Tempest."

Tony, you were part of the decision 🤣 my brother in law mentioned that he got "creepy chills" from vines, plus I thought it looked a bit too busy, so I decided to go with a simpler view! Ideally I'd have the protomolecule growing out the mic arm, but alas, I think Dawes has it locked it up somewhere. Also, teared up a little hearing you describe Amos as having MORE empathy, because it's so true. Totally agree about Frankie.

Mage Reacts

Oh gosh, thank you so much for reminding me!

Mage Reacts

He is the perfect complement to Chrisjen :') such a charming fellow

I love that you love Holden. But some people really dislike him, and that's ok too. He can be very polarizing. And that is I think done on purpose -the PITA lawful good type coming and ruining everyone's day. But he's changing.

We'd better hope Dawes has it locked up somewhere, because if it gets out... we're all in trouble. Talk about creepy chills. Your brother in law is right, vines are creepy. That's pretty much what they do, right? They creep 🙄. The vines that have attacked my yard and garden are actually very attractive, in theory... they have tons of these bright orange flowers and they're quite striking (look up "Trumpet Vine" if you're interested). I think they were probably planted intentionally by somebody who lived here before me (I moved in late last summer). But man, are they out of control. Kind of protomolecule-like in the way they spread (to bring things back on topic). I feel like I'm losing the battle with them this year. Next year I'm going to have to be more aggressive in fighting them. Glad we agree about Amos and Frankie. But I'm sorry if I made you cry. 🥺 The next few episodes are pretty nuts. Keep your tissues at hand, Meg - you may need them a few times. Just saying.

Just wanted to butt in and say that Frankie was on Shortland Street which is a New Zealand soap opera (similar to Coronation Street in the UK), NOT Australia. As much as we love our next door neighbours we get a little touchy when people confuse the two of us. It's like calling a Canadian an American.
