The Dark Knight Returns Pt 2

I knew you said we were going to get Part 2 sometime early this week but I'm so glad we got it today along with a Jessica Jones reaction (which I loved BTW). I do find it funny though that your first time seeing Batman and Superman interact ever, is this movie. And by this time, they already have an established relationship, at one time a part of the Justice League, and now they're fighting against each other. I'm with you on the portrayal of Superman in this. Never liked how Frank Miller basically made Clark a lapdog for the U.S. government and it didn't feel like he had that same boyscout charm that we know him to have and love. Didn't seem like he really nailed Clark's character well. I've also never liked "who would win in a fight?" debates on any characters like Batman and Superman cause it does nothing and it's a never ending argument. Personally, I always prefer Batman and Superman depicted as being best friends. I mean some of my favorite depictions of their relationships have them acting almost like they're brothers with how they interact with each other. So don't worry, you'll definitely get to see a much friendlier side of their relationship eventually in other show and movie depictions. As for this depiction, it's set in its own alternate universe. So anything you watch in BTAS, STAS, or any of the other animated movies are not connected to this universe. So that's another thing you don't need to worry about. Oh and that Oliver character you were questioning about, you'll find out more about him eventually as you keep watching the DCAU shows. To be honest, I would love if you did a whole marathon of episodes for BTAS and STAS just so we can get to the Justice League stuff a lot quicker. But it's up to you and your schedule and I'd rather you not feel obligated to rush through things just to get to the Justice League, especially when there's some great episodes from BTAS and STAS you have yet to see and they'll also help give you more information on some things in DC. But thanks so much for the reaction Meg! Your content is definitely gonna be my go to for helping me get through this fall and winter

The Amazing Webhead

Omg here we are! Aside from Hush, The first time Meg sees Bruce & Clark on screen together and it’s them in a fight. XD Sooner or later, Meg will be Team Superbat. 👀 😅I will say that seeing them fight was a debate fans always talked about for decades and in a way it goes either way depending on the writer. Bruce & Clark always have a unique bond as they are opposites. Supes is light hearted, fun, & brings hope while Bats is more dark, mysterious, & brings justice. Together they are best friends who despite having differences have massive respect for one another. Bruce admires Clark’s pure heart even if he doesn’t show it while Clark shows Bruce that Justice doesn’t always come from darkness and always believes in Bruce when doing the right thing. I can’t wait till you see more content with them teaming up or in stuff with the other Justice League members.

The Amazing Webhead

Side note: the film & the graphic novel showcases a scenario where Joker technically won because he made Bruce lose control which was his goal, to break him and cause the events of the rest of the story. Fitting their final battle is at the tunnel of love cause of their complicated relationship. Also Oliver Queen (the guy who shot the Kryptonite arrow is the superhero, Green Arrow who I know you’ll like once you get to more Justice League stuff. Can’t wait. ☺️

I love getting to see your reaction to Batman and Supes can't wait for you to see more of their friendship especially how it started like in this you can definately tell they have a history and they have different views on how to do stuff. And I'd say the cop lady is a relfection of Jim and how he first met Batman like in Part 1 Jim talks about Pearl habour and she did exactly what Jim said she would she distrusted him then found a reason to trust him. The Joker part was crazy lots of symbolism with the Tunnel of love and everything Joker said to Batman and yea Frank Miller definately has a interesting view on stuff even in the comic its not fully explained but Superman has continued to be a hero and work for the US since the government made all the heroes except him retire, Superman did say Wonder women went back to her Island and Hal Green lantern left the planet and the Oliver guy is Green Arrow which is pretty much DC's Hawkeye and he's rich there's small references to him in Arkham Knight Queen Industries

Naw

........His first *real* animated intro is ep one of Justice League Unlimited.... AND; it's pretty phenomenal. In fact DCAU Justice League Unlimited Green Arrow *is* pretty much *the* *best*/*most* *accurate* portrayal of Ollie *ever*. Not to mention who I think of whenever Ollie is discussed. Only two other iterations even come close; The Young Justice Series (which I *neeeed* Meg to react to at some point), and the Injustice games.

Naw

Oh IK. I was just talking about how Accurate to the character. Only JLU as an intro to him. Yes YJ, does need at least a bit of familiarity with DC, which Meg is well on the way to having watching the OG DCAU, etc as she is now :)

Naw

I really don't like CW Green Arrow. For reasons I'm sure you know, lol, no spoilies for Meg, in case she ever gets there, lol I thought this was a great spot for TDKR, tbh, she does have the Arkham games under her belt too, after all.

Oliver was Green Arrow. It was probably a mistake to watch this before you got to the Justice League Series. Those were the 'colleagues' of Batman that the reporter was asking the president about. I recommend giving this a private rewatch later once you've gone through Justice League. It's technically not the same canon as this movie but that'll give you a better understanding of Batman and Superman's relationship and the relationship between Human Politics and the Superheroes of DC. Even so, I really enjoyed your reaction to this 2 part movie.

Superheroes Rock

Yea this is years in the future where bruce and the other justice leaguers are all old. Except superman since he ages slowly. Alfred dies legitimately from old age and stress. Clark notices carrie at the end but u can see she’s holding a shovel too to dig bruce up. The dark knight returns is the inspiration for things like Batman Arkham Knight and the dark knight rises and etc. it’s the most influential batman comic OAT. You’ll see bruces relationship with the other league members including oliver who is the green arrow when he was young in the upcoming justice league animated show and movies. The comic was made in the 80s so thats why theres a lot of cold war references. Also Batman snaps jokers neck paralyzing him from the neck down but joker himself finishes the job by breaking his own neck. I hope that answers all ur questions LOL.

Superheroes Rock

You 100% should rewatch it again after justice league because it will make SO much more sense. Im not faulting anyone but i think you should’ve reacted to it after after everything else but then again this isnt a canon future its more like an alternate future that is also weirdly set in the 80s.

Even tho Selina was in this for a little bit I thought it was so sweet Bruce kissing her after all these years cause he probably doesn't even talk to her anymore or rarely at all and Selina was portrayed fine to me and she is older what did you expect her to do lol ? Its not like she can be doing back flips or anything or what Bruce is doing and Joker using the lipstick to mind control her reminded me of when Poison Ivy controlled SUperman in batman hush

Unstablebeast

On the point of wtf happened with superman and the nuke, the nuke apparently gave off a similar type of radiation to what kryptonite gives off so he was drained, and since he gets his powers from our suns solar radiation, he was absorbing the sunlight from the plants.....thats not scientifically how that works, but hey comics Also in many versions, superman does atleast to a degree answer to the government, he tends to allow something else to have power over him, be it lois, the justice league or a government, so hes no completely unchecked, also keep in mind, he was raised in kansas as a love your country good ol farm boy lastly, oliver is a hero named green arrow, youll see him in the justice league cartoon here and there, and i think youll really enjoy his character

Superman official motto and what he stands for is “Truth, Justice, and the American Way.” Always has been, always will be.

Frankie H

I remember in the graphic novel the talk show host who Joker killed was clearly drawn to resemble David Letterman. However, they changed how the talk show host was designed in the movie. In the movie talk show host David Endocrine is voiced by talk show host Conan O'Brien. Also I think they modeled the design of the character after Conan too.

Mage Reacts

In fact, "Truth, Justice and the American Way" did not originate with the first Superman comic books by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Instead, the saying came from a "Superman" radio serial in the early 1940s, as a way to cheer on American military efforts in World War II. The "American Way" motto was revived for the "Adventures of Superman" TV series that aired in the 1950s -- during the first days of the Cold War and the height of McCarthyism paranoia.

Mage Reacts

I noticed that in the comic yesterday!!!

They touch on it briefly, but it’s a blink and you miss it kinda thing. Basically from what I can gather, during the era of the justice league they were operating completely outside the law, but finally the government got tired of being shown up, and made to look weak, so I’m guessing with some threat of force, made them disband, and it seems like the US government offered Superman a deal to continue crime fighting so long as he worked them exclusively as an extension of the military. And Bruce hasn’t spoken to Clark all these years because he considers him a sellout. But yeah I don’t care for this version of Clark as unquestioningly loyal to the US government.
