Anakin made C3PO, and flew with R2D2 first.

No, I'm not okay, thanks for asking.

And yes, you're all getting banned.

Have a good night.

Mage thank you for smashing these Star Wars videos out. Qui Gon makes me moist

Methampheminist

ROTS is probably my fav film too so very keen to see how you enjoy that one :D

FireBall_IA

By-gone Jim is my favorite character

Methampheminist

Just for your own sanity, I think you're looking too much into the whole Qui-Gon and Shmi situation. Qui-Gon did try making a deal with Watto to free both Anakin and Shmi, but WATTO rejected his offer. At the end of the day, Watto owns Shmi and has the last say about what happens to her. Even if Qui-Gon somehow stole her from him she still would've had the bomb inside of her and it would've killed her the moment she left Tatooine. It's also important to remember that Shmi gave her blessings to Qui-Gon to take Anakin with them.

Eugh. So much I blocked out, smh George.

Don't worry ; Clone Wars seasons like 3/4 through 7 fixes A LOT... So does Rebels. #AllPraiseTheFeloni 🤭🤭🤭

Ewan McGregor's uncle Denis Lawson, was Wedge Antilles the rebel pilot through all 3 of the original movies, and survived! Local Hero is another good movie of his. Anyway he advised against it as he thought it might end up ruining his career “He was always really dismissive of it because he did a couple of weeks work, sitting in a cardboard spaceship… and yet he had this massive following. It sort of annoyed him.” - McGregor, he doesn't seem to feel the same way now though. Luckily it didn't turn out that way, and Ewan ended up being the best part of these 3 in my eyes. If you ever get round to reading the comics, X-Wing Rogue Squadron was a good series, the games were great too.

Narutoanime16

Love how seeing everything started Lucas writes these so perfectly just one giant story with soo many moving parts for this being like the 3rd or 4th film you watch in the series it’s written so well covering the bases. Young Obi Wan is bae👌

Tyler Paulson

You mean how Lucas was inventing things as he went along and how he destroyed the lore of his own universe with each film? Even the central plot twist of the entire franchise (Vader is Anakin) was invented while they were shooting Empire.

A polarizing film from the very start, obviously intended to be more kid-friendly than the OT but that only casts the darker stuff into sharper relief. Jar Jar Binks is far more loathed than the Ewoks ever were, the actor being unfairly persecuted for it. You guessed Padme's age perfectly, and they actually did a clever thing with her decoy Queen plan taking advantage of another actress who is nearly a perfect double to Natalie Portman- Keira Knightley, who you might recognize from the Pirates of the Carribean films or various historical dramas. Much darkness on the horizon to be sure, but I'm glad Ep. 1 could end on a positive note. It's also amazingly on-point with the origin of its central conflict- a huge corporation (the Trade Federation) gets mad about being taxed. Their victims try to get help from the government but they can't because of political corruption in the Senate. Both the Republic and the Jedi Council's flaws are highlighted here, showing different types of Roman decadence and detachment from the concerns of ordinary people. You don't seem to like their Padawan braids either.

Brodie Vickers

"Jar Jar makes the Ewoks look like fucking Shaft!" Haha

Wish I’d stayed up after midnight to watch and get my thoughts in, happy to contribute now. I’m gonna be all over the place as I try and get thoughts down, so pardon me. First off, books - there are four to recommend: Master and Apprentice, which is a prequel to Phantom Menace, covers more on Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan’s relationship. Then a trilogy for Padmé - Queen’s Peril, Queen’s Shadow and Queen’s Hope. However, do NOT read the Queen books until you have seen the prequels in full. There’s stuff that gives away the plot. There are two more books, Brotherhood and Padawan, but I haven’t read those yet. Hopefully that will give you what you are looking for. Now, the movie. I remember back in the the year 1999 about to turn 22 and camped out for a week with friends on a rotating shift in front of the theater to see Phantom Menace. I remember letting out the biggest cheer opening night as the music hit as I got the first taste of new Star Wars since I was a kid. I stand by my thoughts then and now - the movie is NOT bad. If you expect more of the same as the OT or for it to be dark and broody right from the jump, probably making a mistake. It’s great at the good, but the bad stuff does stick out. Good - absolutely love Qui-Gon and Shmi Skywalker. Best stuff and characters in the movie bar none. I also really liked Padmé, but some of that may be bias because it’s Natalie Portman too. The basic concept of the plot is good too once you understand this is a puzzle piece, not the entire puzzle. It’s a decent self contained story, but really sets in motion a lot of stuff important to come. And then there is Darth Maul and the absolutely kickass lightsaber dueling backed by a masterful John Williams score. Now, the bad and this is where a lot of prequel hate comes from - it’s incredibly broad. You mentioned the accents for the Nemoidians (the Trade Federation guys), plus the accents for the Gungans just are borderline racist. You absolutely wouldn’t do it today. Lucas was going for a callback to Saturday morning serials and the mysterious bad guys who tended to be Asian stereotypes. Not a brilliant move then or now. There is also criticism of Watto potentially being a Jewish stereotype that people point out. And then there is Jar Jar. He was set up as a marketable character akin to the droids and Chewbacca in the originals. That ended up going badly when people HATED the character. I mean, I found him annoying at times, but I can’t do justice to the absolute venom that was spewed from the fan base. People then and now still hold him up as one of the prime “Prequels are bad!” arguments. I don’t entirely agree. As I said, annoying, but not offensive certainly. Yeah, I missed puppet Yoda too. Ironically, he was originally a puppet for this movie, but George didn’t like him and had him replaced with a CG character for the blu ray release. Yeah, George loves to tinker with the movies. And yeah, that’s Jabba - not his dad, actually Jabba. It’s easy to miss him introduced by name if you don’t have the captions on. Personally, I think the podrace scene is too long, but mileage varies. There are so many times in this movie listening to you watching and commenting that I just smile. It’s like “Oh, you’re so close…” and I just can only smile and say “You’ll see. In time, you’ll see.” Hoping for Attack of the Clones before Christmas so we can get to some really good stuff and I can discuss scenes George cut that he absolutely should not have. In closing, I do have one thing to share, if you ever need to remember the movie, the plot or just to smile, I offer a little ditty by Al Yankovich to the tune of Miss American Pie: A long, long time ago In a galaxy far away Naboo was under an attack And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn Could talk the Federation in To maybe cutting them a little slack Their response - it didn’t thrill us They locked the doors and tried to kill us We escaped from that gas And met Jar Jar and Boss Nass We took a bongo from the scene And we went to Theed to see the Queen We all wound up on Tatooinee That’s when we found this boy… Oh my my, mister Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later Now he’s just a small fry He left his home And kissed his mommy goodbye Saying ‘Soon, I’m going to be a Jedi Soon, I’m going to be Jedi!’ Did you know this junkyard slave Isn’t even old enough to shave? But he can use the Force they say Ah, do you see him hitting on the Queen Though he’s just nine and she’s fourteen Yeah, he’s probably gonna marry her someday Well, I heard he built C-3PO And I’ve heard how fast his pod can go And we were broke, it’s true So we made a wager or two He was a prepubescent flying ace And the minute Jabba started off that race Well, I knew who would win first place Oh yes, it was our boy We started singing… Oh my my, mister Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later Now he’s just a small fry He left his home And kissed his mommy goodbye Saying ‘Soon, I’m going to be a Jedi Soon, I’m going to be Jedi!’ Now, we finally got to Coruscant The Jedi I knew would want To hear how good the boy could be So we took him there and we told the tale How his midi-clorians were off the scale And he might fulfill that prophecy Oh, the Council was impressed of course Could he bring balance to the Force? They interviewed the kid Oh, training they forbid! Because Yoda sensed in him much fear And Qui-Gon said ‘Now, listen here Just stick it in your pointy ear I still will teach this boy!’ He was singing… Oh my my, mister Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later Now he’s just a small fry He left his home And kissed his mommy goodbye Saying ‘Soon, I’m going to be a Jedi Soon, I’m going to be Jedi!’ We caught a ride back to Naboo ‘Cause Queen Amidala wanted to I frankly would have liked to stay We all fought in that epic war And it wasn’t long before Little hotshot flew his plane And saved the day And in the end, some Gungans died Some ships blew up and some pilots fried A lot of folks were croakin’ The battle droids were broken And the Jedi I admire most Met up with Darth Maul And now, he’s toast But I’m still here And he’s a ghost I guess I’ll train this boy And I was singin’… Oh my my, mister Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later Now he’s just a small fry He left his home And kissed his mommy goodbye Saying ‘Soon, I’m going to be a Jedi Soon, I’m going to be Jedi!’ Oh my my, mister Anakin guy Maybe Vader someday later Now he’s just a small fry He left his home And kissed his mommy goodbye Saying ‘Soon, I’m going to be a Jedi Soon, I’m going to be Jedi!’ Anuk bow and thank you very much.

Even if the Jedi Council would have preferred to forego all attachment, I don't think Qui-Gon, especially given his defiance of the Council, would have left Shmi (Anakin's mother) like that. He tried to take both of them at first, but Watto valued two slaves equal to a starship, and with the Hutts in control, going against all of that would have been impossible, so Qui-Gon had to settle on the boy. I think his mother is very selfless and wants Ani to leave Tatooine and train as a Jedi, a more noble and better life by far. "Clouded this boy's future is," "His fate is uncertain, but he's not dangerous." Two very different opinions here. Yoda is much more skeptical and not very caring in that moment for Anakin. It's also not that Yoda can see Darth Vader, but he senses that Anakin's fate and future are clouded. Luke sensed that his friends were in danger, but he didn't sense all the details, and he certainly didn't sense that Lando would end up saving them: destiny can change. Anakin being "too old" to be trained tells a pretty clear story. Jedi are discovered VERY early on so that they aren't limited by attachment, as none could form. It's not that they're not allowed to have these feelings though; they're natural, but as Jedi, they must learn to control their feelings and prioritize love and compassion, something that Luke learned to do after learning the identity of his father and managed to save him, while the other Jedi, much like in this film too, have become detached from that. Also, that duel at the end is ONE OF THE BEST EVER. The track playing is called 'Duel of the Fates,' and that name is very significant because it /is/ the duel of fates. If Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon had failed at stopping Maul, then Anakin wouldn't have been trained, and the mysterious Sith Lord would have retained his apprentice. Who knows how the fate of the entire galaxy would have turned out then? Qui-Gon is different from the Jedi; he believes in love and care and he believes in Ani, unlike the Council—that's why he isn't ON the Council. Yoda mentioned his constant defiance. I think the rest of the Jedi aren't bad per se, but they have certainly become detached from the basic tenets of their side in all this. Qui-Gon knew that there is nothing wrong with love or compassion. And yeah, it's a Jesus parallel, with Anakin being conceived by The Force itself and all that. With all that done, AMAZING REACTION BTW!! I'm so glad you like this movie, and yeah... The Sequels are... they're something. Not sure if you're going to rewatch them after finishing The Prequels.

WerewolfF14

the jedi have no jurisdiction in Hutt space as its outside of the republic's control. It'd be like a cop going to another country. Watto would never allow both his slaves to be freed peacefully and if Qui Gon had tried to free Ani's mom by force it could have caused an intergalactic incident for the Republic. Possibly even a war if things went far enough. There is simply nothing he could do at that point. edit: likewise due to the bomb in her he couldn't simply "steal" her either.

Here's some background info on the Republic, the Trade Federation, and Naboo, and how this stuff all works. There are thousands of inhabited planets in the Republic, and each planet has its own local government and leader and customs. Each planet also has a senator to represent them in the Republic senate. The senate being that giant vertigo causing room. So thousands of senators. The head of the republic is the supreme chancellor, who is now Mr. Palpatine. As you can see the republic government is paralyzed with corruption. The bad guys, the "Trade Federation" is a Mega-Corporation. A corporation so powerful they can bully entire planets. I think the Trade Federation is a reference to the "British East India" trading corporation active through 1600 to the 1800s. The head of the Trade Federation the "Viceroy" is literally the title of the British ruler of the colony of India in the 1800s. So some historical parallels that Lucas was drawing off of. As you might have noticed in the senate debate, there were Trade Federation people in the Senate gaslighting Padme, and the whole Senate saying "we didn't invade your planet you're lying." This is another example of how corrupt the republic is. The Trade Federation, a private corporation has a senate seat. I can not stress how messed up that is. Not only planets have senators in star wars, mega-corporations also get their own senators in the republic. Naboo is democratic monarchy. It is ruled by a king or queen who is elected by the people for a term of a few years. Why would they elect a 14 year old as their leader? Well that's explained in the books, you can google it if your curious.

Mage Reacts

This trilogy was my intro to Star Wars, and that final fight between the Jedi and Maul, especially what Obi Wan did after Qui Gon fell, is forever cemented in my mind. EPIC stuff - Caleb

Narutoanime16

Yes! The Maul fight is the first scene I remember when thinking back on this then I saw revenge of the sith & the others

jdmoss644

Yea, shes not wrong at the jedi wanting the kids to not have attachments but Qui gon was different.

Naturekitty5309

I love these reactions. I hope Meg checks out some Star Trek. Next generation for sure. She would love the progressive ideal throughout the series. Especially if she makes it to Deep Space 9.

Brandon Dodge

Honestly I understand how you feel. I think, had Qui Gon survived, that he would have either asked the Jedi Council to do something about the Slavery in Tatooine or would have found a way to save Shmi Skywalker himself. I think at the time he was thinking about the subjugation and death of several people on Naboo and Anakin and the Chosen One Prophecy and getting home alive.

Brandon Dodge

Brotherhood should be read after Attack of The Clones as it takes place shortly after the end of AoTC.

Tayyib Majumder

I love your reactions because you are asking all the right questions. You will see a lot more of the Jedi council and I can't wait to see what you pick up from their scenes. Also, you really quickly picked up the decoy it took me longer to finally realise when I first watched lmao.

Tayyib Majumder

Filoni's clone wars made the prequels so much better for me.

Tayyib Majumder

He is a great improviser, the only thing to me ,that really comes out of nowhere is Leia being Luke's sister but I'm okay with it now.

Tayyib Majumder

I believe duel of the fates is about if Qui-Gon lives or dies. I believe either Dave Filoni or George himself said it is in reference to Qui-Gon living or dying since he would have trained Anakin instead of Obi-Wan. It makes sense since Obi-Wan wasn't prepared he was very young and still a padawan. Qui-Gon was much more accustomed to training a padawan and especially with a young Anakin who I think he would have responded better to a father figure rather than the older brother of Obi-Wan. And if Anakin did have Qui-Gon as a mentor would he have turned to the dark side? Probably not because Qui-Gon was much more understanding of things compared to the council.

Naw

Not to mention Carrie Fisher actively fixing Georges scripts while she was on set.................... 'S'what happens when you're only claim to fame is stealing from the best (cough Frank Herbert cough cough cough) with mediocre writing skills......

Matthew Periolat

D’oh! I hadn’t read it, thought it was a prequel to Episode II. Thank you for the correction!

Mage Reacts

You know what? I totally agree with you! He obviously cared about Shmi and Anakin, you could see it in the way he touched and spoke to them.

Brandon Gibbs

Well Meg I see you starting to really enjoy this prequel trilogy starting with episode one. Yes that was young Obi-Wan and his former master Qui-Gon Jinn from long ago. Also that was Queen Amidala along with her decoy/bodyguard. Also that was little Anakin Skywalker whom they met on Tatooine and really helped them out as you saw. Qui-Gon tried to free his mother too but Watto said no race is worth two slaves. Anyway you might say Anakin really WAS born like how Jesus was. Perhaps he was born by the will of the force. Next that really was the sith lord in the hood but he wasn't the emperor yet back then. Anyway you'll love the next one called "Episode 2 Attack of the Clones" where Anakin is a teenage Padawan still training under Obi-Wan who will be a master now.

Brandon Gibbs

You're right about all that! The only one who was capable of training and raising Anakin was Qui-Gon. As you said Obi-Wan was more like a strict older brother who wasn't exactly fatherly master material at the time.

DarkLadyofSilver

Love your reaction and I've been loving all these Star Wars reactions. Keep on thinking and asking those questions. A few fun facts! Natalie Portman was 16 when she began filming, but was 17 (almost 18) by the time of release. Keira Knightly played Sabe, who was the bodyguard/decoy for Padme. Their mothers said they always mixed them up when they were in the outfits/makeup since they looked so similar.

Methampheminist

If you're interested to react to it, there's a behind the scenes documentary of Phantom Menace on the Star Wars Youtube channel called "The Beginning: Making Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace". It shows the whole filmmaking process from the writing to casting, choreography, filming, editing etc. It's a fun watch not just for Star Wars lovers but admirers of filmmaking as well!

ResoluteRiot

Since you said you wanted more of Padme's bodyguards. When you finish episode 3. Read the Novel Queen's Shadow by E. K. Johnston. There is also a book Called Queen's Peril by E. K. Johnston which I have not read yet that is set during this movie, and it also follows Padme and her bodyguards but since i haven't read it I would still finish up the movies before reading it.

Logaboga

Seeing someone new to star wars appreciating and understanding the prequels is awesome

Unstablebeast

Im so glad you liked this movie, especially little ani. Im even more excited to see your reaction to the rest of the prequels, and eventually the cartoons. Speaking of the cartoons, star wars the clone wars has a bit of a chronology issue, episodes throughout are out of order especially in the first 3 seasons, and i mean like, an episode in season 3 leads into an episode in season 1 kind of messed up order. i know for something like batman the animated series it doesnt really matter much, but for this i highly recommend trying the chronological order, and as we star wars fans are all obsessed, some figured out the exact chronological order of episodes on this site here https://www.starwars.com/news/were-rewatching-star-wars-the-clone-wars

Casey

I think you’re right, I think Padme was 14 and Anakin was 8 in the movie. Fun fact: Keira Knightley was the decoy Queen Amidala

Foehammer

You're absolutely right that they gave the bad guys either Chinese or Japanese accents, and George Lucas was called out on that pretty fast, and rightfully so. Also not only is that Natalie Portman, but her double is played by Keira Knightly. Portman's mom was on the set, and had a hard time telling the two apart, especially when they were in makeup. And now that you've seen this one you can listen to Weird Al Yankovich's song "The Saga Begins"! He made it by looking at the leaks for Episode 1 before the movie came out, and got an early viewing to make sure his song was accurate. Shockingly, he got almost everything spot on and didn't need to change it at all. It's also just a great song, and a parody of American Pie.

Foehammer

Also just a clarification, the blood test that Qui Gon does is just to measure how connected to the force someone is. The higher the midichlorian count, the greater potential in the force one has. They do that to everyone who starts jedi training. And Skywalker is just his mom's name. She's Shmi Skywalker

Ethan T

Any word on Attack of the Clones? :)

Georg Eide

Great reaction, one note is they couldn't bring Anakins mom with them because she had a explosive device embedded that prevents runaway slaves. Also Padme and Co had no power on Tatooine, they were slightly less helpless than the slaves of the planets and couldn't attract too much attention even if they wanted to. A war against the Hutts wouldnt end well for them given their pursuit. They had little to no bargaining chips against Wato

Residentfan 1

I’m gonna be honest, I watched The Clone Wars in release order and I was not confused at any point. It felt like Lucas was going for a WWII vibe where several things are happening all at once and news is reaching civilians(the viewers) at an inconsistent rate, evidenced by the fact that the intro of every episode is narrated like a news broadcast.

Residentfan 1

While the accent itself is racist, them being the bad guys isn’t. The Empire are based on the Nazis. Who helped the Nazis? Japan.

Unstablebeast

It just makes it easier, rather than meg seeing a battle in season 1, then months and months later seeing the lead ip or conclusion of that battle in season 3 when she's probably forgotten details about the battle itself

Carlisle Richards

What George said. Jedi can't just do whatever they want wherever the want. Think of them like soldiers and diplomats.

SirLagginton

One thing to remember that in Return of the Jedi, it was Anakin who restored the balance of the force, Luke simply motivated him to do so. Anakin is the chosen one.

Danny Steele

In fact Natalie’s own mother couldn’t tell the difference. You are one of the few that picked up on it early on.
