Humanity would never be allowed into the Covenant because we are a living heresy to them. They believe themselves to be worthy successors to the forerunners, but us being reclaimers contradicts their entire religion. So the prophets declared war on us and intended to wipe all of humanity out of existence because of the threat we were to their status quo. A lot of the elites were actually starting to question why we weren’t offered a place in the covenant. A lot of them thought of us as worthy opponents and would rather have us fighting alongside them than the grunts. That was another reason the prophets eventually planned to replace elites with the brutes. Brutes were less likely to question by their nature.

LOL @ 18min. Now I see origin of the tweet. I'd imagine growth hormones made some extra things grow... but there were chemical castration things going on - Does that last forever? Who can say? (The TV show's John is nicknamed "Master Cheeks" (by "fans" and hate watchers), maybe you would like it hahaha)

Knowing how arrogant Doctor Halsey is she probably did make sure her spartans have big .... parts. I've never thought about this, but yes I'm sure every part of them are big. Well now I can't unsee it. Halsey's rationale for the spartan II program was that a super soldier assassin squad can kill a bunch of human rebel leaders as you saw in "Halo: The Fall of Reach" and that this would prevent full scale war between earth and her colonies. Now I don't think that's a very good plan but I'm not a mad scientist. Below is a breakdown of the timeline of humanity's colonization of the stars, this is what is depicted in the video. At 3:31 that's Shaw and Fujikawa winning the Nobel Prize for inventing the first slipspace drive which allowed faster than light travel and for humanity to leave the solar system in 2291. I would assume that before that human's tech level was like the Expanse by having settlements throughout the solar system but nothing beyond that. The Slipspace drive opened of the galaxy for humanity. After that humanity had almost 200 years of a peaceful golden age. But around the 2490s colonies started to rebel from Earth and we get the human insurrection war. Then the human covenant war starts in 2525. Halo 3 takes place in 2552 where the human-covenant war finally ends.

Origins 2 is probably my favorite of the Legends episodes, but it's really close with a couple others that are coming up. I'm so glad you liked it! It's more explained in Fall of Reach the book, but John and the other Spartan II's were indeed made originally to fight other humans. There was a huge insurrection movement going on right before the Covenant showed up, and the spartan programs were made as a way of putting them down extremely efficiently. Sgt. Johnson was actually part of the Spartan 1 program, but they weren't taken as children and were given far fewer augmentations. Also, there was a very good reason why no humans ever joined the covenant: the covenant killed every human on sight. The Prophets knew that humanity was the chosen species to take the reigns after the Forerunners died, because that's what the Forerunners wrote and why humans are the only ones who can activate the Halo's. But if the Prophets told anyone else that fact, the covenant would dissolve and their faith would be lost. So they changed the interpretation to mean that humans were the ones who killed the Forerunners, so no one in the covenant would question the idea of killing every human they could as a form of revenge for killing their gods. It was only much later that they started taking human prisoners because they realized that humans could activate Forerunner technology.

I haven't seen this in a decade, forgot how forthcoming it was with those heavier topics. Glad you enjoyed it! Thought I should also watching recommend the animated short "Headhunters" before playing Reach, as it introduces a significant development to the setting that is really important to Reach's story but for whatever reason goes effectively unaddressed in-game

Good question. It's very strange, I think some of it is nostalgia and people misremembering details of the books. When I read the books as a preteen I saw Halsey as a genius scientist and surrogate mother figure for the Spartans. But when I reread the books a decade later I realized that "cool Halsey" was actually a really bad person. People forget about the whole kidnapping kids, human experimentation, and child soldiers part because Master Chief is saving humanity from aliens. That's my theory anyway. Even some of the worst people in the UNSC government thought that Dr Halsey was awful. Like, some of the people in the UNSC that were doing the black ops and secret police stuff, and war crimes looked at Halsey's Spartan projects and thought, "Oh that's messed up even by our standards."

That's a big part of it. There really isn't excuse for what Halsey's did to the IIs. That said, there are moments in Fall of Reach where Halsey thinks very maternally of the IIs and paradoxically doesn't want to put them in harm's way, so it's not like she's super evil, just super delusional lol
