Wallas

Are you okay after this?

Amber

The way this is gonna be SO good 😭 gonna watch today at work!

Isaac

"I may not be much, but please, let me accompany you" An interesting bit of trivia/characterization, is this line that serves as Komugi choosing to die with Meruem; it is also phrased in the traditional way that Japanese women accept marriage proposals.

alon

lmao lola is literally me

Ammar gayal

37 min :o I was expecting 1h at least, but it will probably be legendary 37min XD

Isaiah Cox

ITS HERE EVERYBODY GET YOUR TEAR BUCKETS READY

Isaiah Cox

I GOTTA OFF MYSELF HOW THIS COME OUT THE SECOND MY LUNCH IS OVER

Jack SV

Damn I can’t believe we are actually here.. I think you girls started this arc last year and now after a long time we are finally almost at the end of this arc. Man I wish the anime came back… maybe one day after the manga is over.

StrawHat

this episode had me sobbing so hard I was gasping for air lmaooo...it was such a beautiful ending

Ben Tyson

I had been waiting to comment the following Gungi symbolism for literal months, for this exact episode reaction. This is from a youtube comment on some Hunter x Hunter-related video: Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side.

I'll never forget the first time I watched this episode and concluded this arc, but one thing I can guarantee, it hits even harder when you rewatch it, that's the magic of this arc and of hxh as a whole

Ben Tyson

Here is an excellent interpretation of Meruem and Komugi's final moments: The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away

Notice, not a single “I love you” was uttered throughout this arc. Yet every interaction between them holds so much gravity. These amateur romance writers need to take notes.

Wrong. Please stop copy & pasting this comment, it's a preposterous misinterpretation. Not only is it inaccurate, but it’s a watered down explanation. Kokoriko isn't an offensive technique that "isolates the King and kills it off." Kokoriko Is a defensive technique that isolates the King / Marshall piece, and uses all the other pieces to protect it from the inside against external attacks. Hence reflecting what the Royal Guards did to Meruem. Killing the King is the point of Gungi / Chess in the first place. That's the obvious implication behind the hunters' plan to separate the king to begin with. It has nothing to do with Kokoriko. Also Komugi didn't "unexpectedly develop a counter" to Kokoriko. She thought of that counter technique years before in a competition. The "she reversed my reversal?" phrase more so signified Welfin saying her name, waking up Meruem back to himself after he temporarily reverted into his old chimera ant identity from losing his memories because of the nuke. Again, had nothing to do with Kokoriko's counter or Kokoriko itself.

Vimeo is bullying us. Let us all join hands and despair

Justin Anglemyer

Waited 135 episodes for this reaction! It was perfect!

Larry Isaac

After many times of rewatching this arc, I began to notice the ending with Meruem asking Komugi "Are you still there?" multiple times. I almost felt as if Meruem began to lose his physical senses as his body continued to decay. In particular, his wording made it seem as if he couldn't see her anymore and was blind just as she was. The idea of that being a possibility made the scene even more emotional for me lol.

Junkboy

I know I say it too much but thank you so much for allowing us to relive this through you. Meruem's ascent into becoming a loving human doing so much for Kamugi while Gon's decent into darkness as he loses his humanity. It's strange because Killua was the one who always doubted his ability to love and care but Gon was the one who lost himself to darkness.

Vicente de Paulo Guimaraes Priante

The paralels are now complete , the human died as monster because of hate and revange, the born monster died as a human because of love … and like paralels they never meet…

Darrach

No notes. Just perfection.

Ulfway

Yeah, imagine a reaction out there for 135 where everyone isn't alluding that something sad is going to happen.. these girls read your comments and you guys are always giving away shit leading up to this, they're not dumb they can piece things together and so ofc they knew how this episode was going to play out.. seems you all don't want blind reactions like what's the deal? Whoever's idea it was to tell them to watch 2 episodes together is also an idiot, you doing that puts expectations on those episodes, like why do that? I don't understand why you guys are like this, how hard is it to just shut up and let them watch.

Daniel Gonzalez

Lola is me every time I rewatch this episode I cry like a baby 😭

Daniel Gonzalez

So glad to have followed along to this with you both!

Yū Nishinoya

thank you girls, you are wonderful 💖. I was thinking that I'm glad the king said "I'm counting to you" to Pitou...all the royal guards experienced a moment of happiness before dying and I find it beautiful that she started crying when she heard those words

Alberto Almeida

Meruem in this episode was drawn as a young boy in love.

Giancarlo Martinez

you know, first time I watched this episode, the day it aired btw, I thought it was sad and beautiful but it did not manage to make me tear up, but for some reason from the second and the many subsequent times I re-watched this show, it has floored me. I just cannot watch this without ugly crying to myself. What an arc, right?

David Salazar

Dam you vimeo... I always watch the full reaction first lol

They talk about their friends who tell them about this show and Milena goes on tvtime. I'm sure they get plenty of worse spoilers from outside the comments. Also the girls are smart, that's why we're here. They understand what would be satisfying and it's not like this episode sneaks up on you.

Kevin Inoj Perez

Of all the days Vimeo goes uncooperative, it's on the best episode of HxH. 😭

madgod

Which is more impactful? Gon's "death" whilst Killua watches or Meruem's death whilst Komugi watches?

Shivering King Banana

I believe the real Diego who spoke this episode was actually Togashi speaking directly to his audience.

Seni Adeyemi

Throughout the story Meruem always said “I won’t repeat myself.” At the end, for Komugi, he said “I’ll repeat myself as many times as I have to.”

Paffu

We’re finally here. I’m glad to see your reaction and can’t wait to see your reaction to the next arc!! If you haven’t yet decided what show to watch next, I’d recommend Beastars!!

Yū Nishinoya

They were both blind in the last moments of their life

Alex

cant believe we dont have the full lenght with. im worried . happen always with the best episode

Shrump

Meruem and Komugi's final moments has got to be one of the best scenes in all of HxH. Maybe the absolute best scene. It's incredibly well written and the sheer degree to which you feel the emotions is unbelievable. Its an absolutely beautiful scene filled with so many amazing moments that ends with the "are you here" sequence. Truly stunning. Hope you enjoy the final arc, it has plenty of great moments as well.

Mra Keung

No words. What an amazing episode. The climax isn't this big flashy fight. It almost never is with HH tbh. What you think is a fighting anime is actually a love story. This arc is some epic masterpiece.

I know they always joke about how this show is unpredictable and such but even though they don't actually predict the plot development, they see forward alot on things like themes and messages. they understood this story very well and understood very well what the author wanted to portray. they actually don't "need" those spoilers hints because they deep down already knew what was going to happen and what the fate of many characters was way ahead, because they're good observers and understanders of stories

Aglio Olio

One more episode in the arc and i'm sure they'll cry again

Cole

One of the best episodes of anything I’ve seen. The way this arc added 2 new characters and made you care about their relationship more than anything is crazy.

Sebastian

crazy to realize this arc started being written in 2003 and didnt end til 2011. 8 years of planning (and hiatuses) all culminating in a quiet and beautiful moment between 2 characters

Kevin Inoj Perez

Meruem thinking about his guards for the last time. Meruem turning blind like Komugi. Komugi saw Meruem by feeling his face for the first time. Komugi granted Meruem's wish even though he hadn't won a single time. It has been a pleasure to share this beautiful moment with you two! ♥

idoleyes

It's writing like this that makes Hunter x Hunter so beloved among shounen anime fans. Not many shows could pull off such a beautiful and heartbreaking scene for one of the main antagonists. Hunter has incredible fights, and a complex power system, but the core of it is its characters - I never thought at the start of the arc that I would cry so much for an ant. It's been an awesome ride to get to this point, and I hope you continue to enjoy the final arc.

Stevenmcd4

i cannot wait for haikyuu!

JATLA

Waited so long to see yous react to this. I didn’t see how the phantom troupe/Yorknew City arc could be topped, then Mereum and Komugi happened🥲 The king REPEATING himself to make sure Komugi was still there after he went blind himself😭 Poetry

DelgAlessio

at First i was like "yeah can't wait for Lola to finally watch this episode" but then as time went by I was like "wait wait she's gonna choke, call an ambulance, they're breaking her" lol

Lupa is Dadi

love how during the start of their match you can hear the pieces being moved as they play but in Meruems last moments you don’t hear the pieces being moved anymore, as Meruem looses his sight and strength indicating they’re both playing in their heads, memorising each move. fun little detail!

Louis Blondeau

Lola, you're a magnificent soul. I think you understand this story and its characters the exact way Togashi want us to. You guys are the best at what you do ! Kiss from France

Guilherme Marques

09:50 when Lola saw the dog she was prepared to see Ging and snap at him lmao

Edward Worrall

i love how you actually watch the shows. some reactions on youtube are just empty calories you can tell they arent into the show or even worse have already seen it and know theyre gonna make cash out of it. watching you both experience this episode and just absorb its grander themes has been such a pleasure to watch.
