ok... i'm scared, i'm three episodes behind (counting this one) and that thumbnail is giving me the creeps

Varus

"So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit." (Matthew 7:17-18, ESV) This illustrates that good actions (fruit) come from a changed heart. In Christianity, it's not about striving to be good through our own effort or works; rather, it’s through being transformed by God's grace and having a new heart, made possible by the Holy Spirit. A changed heart leads to good fruit in our lives, like love, kindness, and peace, which flow naturally from our relationship with Christ. This aligns with the concept that salvation and transformation come first, and the good deeds follow as evidence of that change.

Varus

Romans 11:6: "But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace." (Romans 11:6, ESV)

Varus

Christianity uniquely deals with guilt and shame, not by telling you to work it off or ignore it, but by offering complete forgiveness through Jesus.

Varus

In contrast, Christianity offers immediate and complete forgiveness through Jesus Christ, where your sins are washed away and you are made new, no matter what your past was like. You don’t have to go through cycles of reincarnation to "learn" and pay off karma—you are forgiven once and for all through faith in Christ.

Eric

I actually had the same thing happen to a different reactor a couple days ago lol. I just got ahead of the girls by an episode.

lol, what the fuck are hou yapping about?

sand_fl

well @eric, as someone who loves raccoons i salute you for your profile picture

Elijah Glory

God i've waited so long for this episode lol

BND

Milena's face 🤣

Kash B

You know, Heisenberg would have thrown that pizza on the roof. It just goes to show you that Tony never had the makings of a varsity athlete

bondbond53

Idk how to explain it but I just don't like how this storyline was introduced and presented. Don't get me wrong I totally believe the Adriana Tony thing is possible from the characterisation we got throughout the show but I just did not like this execution. I remember hating watching this episode. Like I said in episode 1 of this season, season 5 has many moments like this for me

Darrach

Junior on the phone saying “Apparently, he came all over the sun visor 😏” with that smug little grin kills me everytime

kevin coleman

Love this episode. Deus Ex Machina itself has to intercede to try to stifle Tony's horndog tendencies, and even that isn't enough to stop the fallout of his destructive impulses.

Darrach

…so Jesus leans off the cross and whispers to Peter “I can see your house from here!”

IanJ

I forgot that this is also the episode where Tony returns to therapy. Similar to the Adriana storyline, it feels somewhat abrupt, especially when compared to Tony’s earlier return to therapy in Season 2. Adriana did share a story about giving a handjob to Penn Jillette, so it’s not entirely far-fetched to believe she might be attracted to Tony lol. Overall, her scenes with Chris in this episode emphasize the themes of victimhood and the complex dynamics between abusers and their victims within close-knit groups. When Adriana is with the FBI agent and defends Chris’s actions, saying, “If he was in a car with a woman, I’d kill him", it’s as if she’s trying to justify his behavior to the agent, despite already being aware of his history with strippers and mistresses.

Gaboxxy

Besides how rushed it was, it felt like the writers desperately tried to paint Adriana in a bad light despite her character not having any major flaws before this. Forget that she almost cheated, her mocking of Chrissy's attempt at sobriety alone already felt extremely out of character considering how supportive she's been of him the entire series (for better or for worse). I get that they make a point of showing every character at their worst but still, it was way too rushed to be believable.

IanJ

The telephone game in this episode is really hilarious. Really shows what they think of Tony behind his back.

Gaboxxy

The fact that Georgie was the one to (falsely) tell Christopher that Ade was sucking Tony's dick almost justifies every ass beating he got from Tony.

kevin coleman

I don't think it was that they were trying to give her flaws, I believe the writers were moreso trying to parallel Tony and Adrianna's stories in this episode. They are both dealing with times of immense personal turmoil and acting out accordingly. For me, at least, I can buy into the fact that the incredible stress of being a snitch and engaged to an abusive psycho could drive Adrianna to make an impulsive decision in this ep. Though I do concede that the placement of this story would have made more sense later in the season in order to give those tensions that drive Tony and a Adrianna's bad decisions more time to breathe.

BND

Man, Lola really hates everyone in this show. It's so hilarious to watch her get so physically angry every single episode 😂

BNJ

Grace? She passed away 30 years ago. 10 points to whoever can guess what movie that's from

Jack SV

Ngl, I know Milena doesn’t like scary movies but her expression in the thumbnail is scaring me.. doesn’t help I’m about to watch this reaction at nights by myself lol

Veya

It wasn’t rushed. They just propelled it (which is what the show has done plenty of times before with other story beats so this one didn’t stand out). You can notice on a rewatch some of the interactions they had as far back as season 4, even contrasting Tony and Ralphie’s interactions with her and what she says specifically in that scene (i'm thinking specifically of the episode 'mergers and acquisitions') that laid out the possibility of this type of thing. Not as robust of a foundation as say, tony's reasons for killing ralphie, which was similarly propelled, but the first time i watched this, i didn't think it was so out of place or that there was no foundation for it. kevin coleman also hit the nail on the head. They are both in particularly vulnerable states of their lives. This entire season has been ramping up Tony’s isolation and now he has a cancer scare and with being separated, he has an outlet here. Adriana is consistently being treated like shit by Chris and she’s feeling relatively more tenderness from Tony who’s willing to talk to her about more personal stuff that also happens to be health related which is what she's going through.

Edward. M

“The thought never even entered my head” Yeah sure Tony, I’m sure that’s why you were damn near breathing on one another for five seconds “No I don’t I love you” yeah sure Adriana I’m sure that’s why you were 5 seconds and an interruption away from kissing his uncle, father figure, role model and boss. I know any defence of Christopher in this episode is wildly unpopular but I’ve always felt Christopher’s anger in this episode was absolutely justified, his actions were deplorable but how he felt was absolutely valid. The two people he probably cares about the most were a door knock and Godly intervention away from betraying him in the worst way possible. And for people who make the argument “well nothing actually happened” that’s a pathetic argument no offence, this is one of those situations where even the possibility of it happening or it almost happening is bad enough. You knowing that you’re fiancé almost had sexual relations with your uncle but was stopped by circumstance not her own will would be grounds to break it off if you were a reasonable person which obviously Christopher is not and he crashes out in devastating fashion. And the guy you’ve implicitly vowed loyalty and dedication to for most of your life, the guy you believe is worth going to hell for has such little respect for you that he envisions taking your fiancé and “fucking her brains out” In all honesty that was a reasonably unreasonable crash out from Christopher.

BND

I'm starting to think Dr. Melfi is not a very good therapist 😂

Jack SV

Ngl, this episode came and went like a fucking canon ball lol. Idk but for me it was a bit weird how all these events were presented since Tony doesn’t interact much with Adriana up to this point. Like.. I get what they were trying to do but I feel it could’ve been better.

space colon

Tony fetishizes Melphi as his perfect Italian mother/caregiver/sex object, when

JBK405

More than all the love affair drama, the part of this episode that sticks with me the most is Tony's wording when he's trying to convince Carmela to help at the end: He keeps saying "this family" (A member of this family, part of this family, etc.). Not "my" family or "your" family or "Chris's family". THIS family. I think that's him as-much-as-saying that he's never going to go along with a divorce. This is Tony saying that in his mind they're all still one single family. The separation is temporary, their reunion is inevitable, because to him they're STILL together. Everything that's going on -- him moving out, talking about finances, and so on -- is just playacting until they reconcile.

Knot

The scene where the fbi is mocking Adriana makes my blood boil. Obviously Chris is always being a scumbag to her but the feds are literally supposed to help her and they couldn’t care less about the abuse she takes. EDIT Also Vito (the guy bragging about Adriana calling him) is literally first cousins with Adriana… so yeah

Abacus

Varus you should go back and read my comment on Pine Barrens

Abacus

Space colon's comment. It petered out. It died on the vine.

Mark M

I love this episode for how insane it is, just so entertaining to watch. I love that they go through all that and then it all just gets 'resolved' and they have to go back to normal the next day. Tony and Chris are really starting to break down. Tony's selfishness and manipulation are barely in check at this point. Maybe it's more entertaining than realistic, but what are you gonna do?

Darrach

I should not have to be coming here, hat in my hand, reminding space colon about his duty to the comment section.

Gaboxxy

When was it stated that they are cousins?

cheech

The reactions where it’s shocked face/nervous laughter for half the time are my fav 😭

Knot

I don’t remember which episode but in season 2 when sil and paulie talk to Richie about building beansie the ramp, sil says “that nephew of yours vito” and I’m sure you also remember Adriana calling Richie her uncle many times.

JBK405

I honestly never put together that Vito and Adriana are related. Odd how that slipped past me. It's possible that they're not FIRST cousins, since Vito might not be Richie's direct nephew (We see with Tony and Chris that they often call people uncle/nephew who aren't actually direct relatives), but they're close enough.

Veya

It was done the same way Carmela and Furio suddenly had a thing for each other in season 4 when they barely interacted in prior seasons. The circumstances are what made it believable. Carmela was unhappy and i guess at some point Furio became Tony’s driver so them coming across each other more for infatuation to develop made sense. Same thing with Ralphie’s kid (who was only mentioned in a single line prior) appearing in an episode suddenly and playing a big role. Even if we never saw him prior, it’s been well established in this subculture that these guys would likely have a wife and kids, Paulie and Junior being notable exceptions, which the show lampshades. Pretty much the same thing here, specific circumstances means these two are particularly vulnerable and I would say, there were some small scenes prior that laid some foundation for it. It’s not actually something in terms of writing style the show hasn’t done before. I think people are just more shocked because it involves two characters that are in polar opposite life situations and is more unexpected in a macro sense.

Gaboxxy

@Knot If that's the case, that would also mean Vito killed his own cousin Jackie Aprile Jr.

Gaboxxy

@Abacus 5 season of the Sopranos with LM, I wanted to read a smart comment by Varus. I compromised, I read a once in a blue moon comment by space colon instead.

Knot

Yeah he did, vito ain’t the brightest

Axel

The ending is so beautifully awful.

Simon M. y Atana Sumi

I think it's also modern sensibilities of TV shows creating wrong expectations. Most are plot-per-season and teach the audience to expect that anything big would always come with a big trail of clues before, which is also why I think Sopranos feels more like life unfolding, since some issues drag for a ton of time (Tony's conflict with Ralphie), while others pop and go. That, and the fact that characters contain more layers motivating them through a single episode to explain their behaviour, instead of a single obvious one (like, in this episode alone, Tony may seem to be only dealing with his impulses towards Adrianna, but he's also dealing with the anxiety of the cancer scare, and way deeper, with his unresolved guilt over destroying his marriage).

BND

The FBI's job isn't to help her or any informant, it's to get them to divulge as much information as possible so they can make arrests. In their eyes she's a criminal involved in an ongoing criminal organization. Sure she personally hasn't killed anyone but she's still involved in that world. I'm no fan of the FBI but let's face it, the people they're dealing with are the scum of the earth. Fuck'em. None of these people get any sympathy from me, Adriana included.

Gaboxxy

@BNJ in their eyes she's a criminal for snorting a little H? Nah, they know she's basically innocent and they don't give a shit as long as they get something out of it. The sad thing is that if she had gotten a lawyer from the get-go and immediately told the crew what was happening probably nothing would've happened. The "intent to distribute" charges were bullshit to begin with and the crew could've definitely paid for a decent lawyer. The feds knew this, but they were counting with Ade being dumb and naive, and they were right. Now of course it's too late, she got in too deep.

Veya

@simon you hit the nail on the head with how people are more used to modern style writing. It's the same reason some people found it jarring (though not in this reaction channel's comment section) that we were suddenly introduced to ralphie's girlfriend tracie in an episode with a big role, despite us being in the bing all series long with no mention of her. It does follow more real life logic and flow. Sometimes you just abruptly interact with someone because there was no reason for you to have met that person before. A lot of the mob character's families (in future seasons) will also be introduced this way, but it isn't supposed to be shocking that say, they have kids or a wife/gommah even if we haven't met them before. It's just logical based on what we know about this world and their culture. I also think part of the confusion is that this show DOES occasionally do the more modern style of leaving a big trail of clues to a plot development. I noticed it on a rewatch, but every episode in season 3 leading up to meadow and noah's breakup in 'university' had at least one scene that dealt with tony's disapproval and his issues with black people in general.

Mike

Tony promising "on his children" that nothing is going on between him and Adriana... ten minutes after he was dreaming about running away and starting a new family with her!

Mike

Adriana is an accessory to hundred of crimes. The feds are using the drugs to force her into cooperating, but she isn't "innocent" in the slightest.

Isaac

@Veya At least the Furio storyline began at the beginning of a season, which is coming off of a time-skip. It's more reasonable that dynamics can change in the background there.

Gaboxxy

@Mike come on dude, she's as an accessory as any other girl that is girlfriend of a thug, yet you don't usually see the FBI going out of their way to target any girl that has a gangster for a boyfriend. Hell, in real life Henry Hill's wife was MUCH more involved in his husband's criminal activities yet she was basically left off the hook with a stern warning LOL. Again, they just saw an easy and unethical way to gain an informant and they took it.
