The way you still feel so dreadful, with the soundtrack being an upbeat banger, is a masterful stroke of filmmaking. The contrast makes it feel even worse.

The mother probably knows that imperial officers/soldiers are abusive (and very possibly even more exploitative towards women and girls) and therefore is being protective toward the daughter, not wanting her to show defiance towards the imperials and give them more reasons to take advantage of yet another farmer girl. 31:25 - LOL probably not all that many native english speakers even know that "ochre" is a color (or how to spell it), let alone that it matches a field of grain.

that's the problem though, Mon doesn't comfort her. She just offers her a way out. Leida doesn't want a way out, she wants her mother to console her and say 'everything will be alright'. Mon struggles with the high stakes rebellion, and the low stakes one at home. In the end though, she ends up supporting both regardless of the personal cost to her sense of self.
