Joan, and also Peggy

mundanelotus

Yay Mad Men! Also I forget but is anything set to replace Bocchi?

bondbond53

Don and Joan together are just breathtaking. I'm glad the show never consumed their possible couple as it would do both characters no grace

Josip

youve already seen the wire so what else is there to anticipate??

Josip

this is a spoiler so delete it jesus is it so hard to not spoil shit

Subwoolfer

they literally asked for warnings in the post

bondbond53

Guys, when is the next poll for a short show happening? I've been joking before but now that I've finished "Heated Rivalry" I genuinely can't recommend it enough to the girls. The best TV experience I've had all year genuinely and at only 6 episodes. I know the girls LOVE romance so this should be up their alley because the chemistry between the main actors is crazy

Mike

Pluribus, surely.

bondbond53

It's just 6 episodes guys let me have thissssss. Would LOVE Deadwood and Pluribus after obviously

Chris

oh nice its Leftovers time

Darrach

Unfortunately they’ve seen it

Griffen Rosado

Like you said in the discussion, they know just how to deploy Don and Joan scenes. We don't see them a lot but they hit like dynamite everytime. Regarding the script, prospective writers used to submit scripts all the the time. Ron Moore, the Battlestar Galactica showrunner, had washed out of the Navy and got a job as a TV writer for Star Trek The Next Generation by submitting a spec script to the production offices. It's more of a network tv tradition but some tv veterans will say that its instructive as a way to develop your skills since writers rooms used to be bigger and new writers were hired for ongoing shows with preestablished character dynamics more frequently.

Jack SV

Damn I didn’t know we were re watching the wire next week.

Chris

oh wow i didnt expect them to watch The Knick. great news.

thenamelessgirl

sooo can we get an anime movie reaction? 👁 or frieren 1x01 rewatch? 👉👈

Taya

Mmmm I'm really craving a plate of Megan's plain dry spaghetti....looks delicious

Dhaval Kale

*Wild Hinduism appears* "Is this a cult?" lmaoooo

Myeh

ok what is actually best show to ever exist haha

La Baanga

Best show to ever exist, you say? What a way to announce you'll be watching Justified next.

Jack SV

I’ve only seen one episode of Deadwood but I’m voting for Deadwood if it comes down to a poll.

Alfie Harrison

It’s literally Mad Men imo. It’s the most meticulously written series of all time

windyMelon

"You want cheese with that?" Erm, yes please for the love of god

Juanma88

Paul said that his girlfriend used to be promiscuous and now she is saved. The thing is that she is still the same and had sex with Harry because people never change, an usual theme in Mad Men.

PIG

Warn you?! Never!! lol We all knew you would love what's coming. So glad you are enjoying this :)

Mark M

They're talking about Frieren lol, new season starts next week

Taya

Not sure if "love" is the right word lol, I imagine they're pretty upset about what happens. But god it's such a good episode

Jude’s IFs

I love how they handle these scenes with Joan and Don. Cause they hardly ever put them together but when they do it’s magnetic. They clearly respect each other quite a lot

Alfie Harrison

This string of episodes from now to the finale might be my favourite of the whole series

petitcorbeau

Yes omg it's time for a change of pace. They are always watching such heavy shows especially live action like people always want to make them watch lighter animes but huh live action shows then?? And heated rivalry is so good!

Mark M

Love the scenes with Don and Joan. "Surprise, there's an airplane here to see you!" They almost feel like old friends catching up despite working together. Not really a fan of the Paul story. Not my favourite character but to bring him back as a punchline feels cheap.

PIG

Agreed. And it really truly is a great episode, along with the rest to come

ruseka

Deadwood! Deadwood! Deadwood! Best show they haven’t seen; but for a real long shot (and I feel like I’ve said this before) but I think they’d really dig into The Deuce, the David Simon show. It’s a shame it doesn’t get recognised for its quality.

Mike

"I think this is the most meaningful work I've ever done in my life. It's a speculative episode of the hit television show Start Trek." Elite Don & Joan episode. Elite Meredith episode. Elite Harry episode??? The scene with Harry & Kinsey at the diner is the most seriously the show has taken Harry since S1, and I honestly love it. A genuine mix of shame about Lakshmi, concern for Paul, a desire to right his wrongs, and the dirty feeling of having to do it with $500 in cash... Really strong stuff from a character (two characters, even) who has mostly become a punchline. I learned from entourage (which I think we should watch someday) that the hobbit script was written by fans, so that can happen as far as adaptations from books, but writing scripts on spec of an ongoing series is a long shot. Though, maybe is can showcase skills.

JBK405

I believe wholeheartedly that if Lane had asked Don, or even Roger, for a loan, they would have given him one out of their own pocket. Don may not have even asked for it to be paid back (Although Roger probably would as a way to assert dominance). But he can't bring himself to ADMIT that he needs help, so he lies to his wife, and his coworkers, and his partners, and tries to fix it with embezzlement. (Bert Cooper and Pete wouldn't have given him a personal loan. Pete because Layne knocked him flat a few episodes ago, and Bert because of his extreme social darwinistic philosophy.) What I think is so apparent with Don and Joan's scene is that Don honestly doesn't mean to treat other people badly. There no ill-intent. And that somehow makes it all the more sad, because that means that all of the harm he causes is incidental and didn't need to happen. I think this episode is actually Harry acting at his best (which is a low bar to cross). Leaving aside cheating on his wife with what he thinks is a friend's girlfriend (Which is inexcusable), he truly wants to help Paul. He doesn't want to crush a friend's dreams, he also doesn't want to break his heart, so he pays out of his own pocket to give him the opportunity to explore his dream elsewhere. Is it the right thing to do? No, it's not. I think it's going to explode and ruin Paul's life even more in LA. But he was really trying to help.

Kendall Roy 🇧🇷

The chemistry between Don and Joan is insane, the two of them together in a relationship would be chaotic to a level that even the show's writers wouldn't know how to handle

Jamie

They couldn't even get many platonic scenes in there. The bisexual panic was too real. They even got Milena to use the word “babies” in a scene with Don Draper in it. Even though she walked it back in the review and said it was all Joan. Haha.

tilden katz

The FAN SERVICE that was that scene with Don and Joan, was exactly what we thought a scene like that would be. Doris Day singing the Christmas Waltz in the background. Oh, man................ Don can only feel that a woman is special if he doesn't want them. Peggy is the love of his life, (yeah, I said it) and he admires Joan greatly. Lane has been going to far away places, figuratively, all season.

tilden katz

It does feel a little shabby.

Virgil Hawkins

I’m on my first watch through right now, and I agree. I was trying to watch it alongside LM, but I couldn’t not watch ahead, and I’m 2 episodes from the ending. I am in awe of the quality of this series.

tilden katz

How do you think she's going to react to THAT episode??? I have an idea.

tilden katz

Harry: It was really hard for him. Peggy: Then he shouldn't do it. BINGO. That was the line of the episode. Peggy has become ruthlessly perceptive, almost as much as Joan.

Kendall Roy 🇧🇷

I love Milena's love-hate relationship with Don Draper, and it's been building since the first season 🤣🤣 but when he shows even a little decency, it's impossible not to be charmed

Scott

Lmao at the caption, it's great you were so surprised!

Mahad Ali

An unsolicited Star Trek script was how Ronald D. Moore, the creator of Battlestar Galactica got his start… He was on a private tour of the set of Star Trek Next Generation and, unsolicited, handed an episode script to the show creator’s assistant. That one interaction got him an agent and they eventually bought the script and filmed it as an episode. He was 25 at the time. (I think he eventually became the show runner.) So there is precedent for what kinsey is trying to do… and ironically the precedent was set on the very same show.

I think Don would have given him the loan but I also think any normal company would have let him go once he informed them. Since no prudent company would allow a guy with money problems to have such control over their finances.

Mahad Ali

I don’t know if that’s fair. From her perspective she wasn’t being promiscuous. She was using sex as a weapon against harry and not for personal pleasure. As she indicated, she was disgusted by what happened. I think the problem is that she learned from her past life that sex is the only power she has and she used that power to protect the cult. As delusional as it is, this act kind of demonstrates selflessness. Which is the opposite of the hedonistic lifestyle she supposedly led. (To be clear, my above comment doesn’t change the fact that she is an awful person. Especially when it comes her treatment of Paul.)

JBK405

Bert, definitely. Roger...MAYBE. Don, I think probably not, because being bad at personal financials is not the same as being bad at company financials, and Don's entire gimmick is moving forward from past mistakes. And if he did tell Don (or possibly Roger) in confidence instead of lying and cheating , he could have said "And here let me SHOW you how good I'm doing at the books!" to back himself up at work. Plus, like L&M pointed out at the end, they really can't "fire" him since he's a partner. Being in personal debt isn't grounds for cancelling a partnership agreement. They could restrict his duties, or go through the work of buying him out, but that would cost them all a fortune. They'd have to spend way more than the cost of this loan, and would even end up needing to hire somebody to replace him (Not a partner, but still some financial guy). I'm not saying it would have gone well for Lane (it almost certainly would prevent them from making him a senior partner at any time in the near future), but it could have gone not-horribly and been resolved with a single cash exchange.

Julien

Roger is obviously rich but nowhere near a present-day billionaire lol. Remember, he agreed to sell S&C to PPL because his divorce was expensive. When you are a billionaire, you require a security detail - even if you're not famous. You might ask, who would know? But there is no way to quietly have that kind of money. And Roger is a man of society. He would need security. Yet Rogers runs around town solo, sometimes in seedy places (like the illegal gambling joint, the brothel, or the part of town where he got robbed with Joan). When you're billionaire, you fly by private jet, even if you don't own one (you can charter it). Even if you are frugal, again, it's a security issue. Roger flies commercial. When you're a billionaire, access to you has to be controlled. That's because that kind of money attracts all kinds of people. People will seek you out for example to fund this and that project. Constantly. You are basically an institution. For your own tranquility, you have to remove yourself from regular people. There must be people in your employ to filter out who gets access to you. Roger's seems quite accessible. When you're a billionaire, you can call the president, and I assure you the White House would get him on the phone. If you request a meeting, he will see you. Roger has nowhere near that kind of clout. A billion dollars is an extraordinary amount of money. It's fuck you money. It's very easy to buy an expensive apartment on a whim with a far far smaller net worth.

Sami

Yeah, Don Season 5 is my favorite Don.

Sami

Golden Kamuy please, i know they are going to love it.

Juanma88

I'm not judging her. And I think both takes can be true at the same time, she can't help to have risky sex with a stranger and then feel disgusted after the fact, like a sex addict. That how I read the character. Then there's Paul that has a saviour complex with his partners, but he is unable to see things as they really are.

Sami

Yes, as much as I loved seeing them together, it definitely feels like fan service.

Sami

Also, we need to get you to watch Golden Kamuy, it is the closest thing to FMAB and even surpasses it in my opinion.

Scott

Imagine if Frieren season 2 winds up like Arcane season 2. LM might shut down the channel.

Mike

Yeah, in the days before tightly-serialized television, it was pretty common to write and sell spec scripts to on-going tv shows. That's how Vince Gilligan got his break on X-Files.

Mike

I would hardly call him a punchline (though the shaved head is funny.) It's part of an on-going trend to bring back old characters who've found themselves in dire straits (see also Midge last season) as a mirror to the SCDP folks. Our main characters, generally speaking, have it made. High paying jobs, loving spouses, everything they could want -- and they're still miserable, disillusioned, and unfulfilled. Harry, for example, is a serial cheater who complains about his wife every week. Meanwhile, here comes his foil Paul, who didn't luck his way into being Head of Media, didn't get the SCDP life raft, and has *actually* seen his life fall apart around him. Paul's "girlfriend" fucks his best friend to keep him trapped in a cult. See the difference? Jason

If they do a long show before Pluribus, I’m breaking up with Lola.

Julien

@tilden: lol yup

Julien

Never felt that way. It's normal for shows to pair characters for an episode. Don and Harry had an episode recently with the Rolling Stones thing. Don and Pete famously ended up in CA together. The episode widely considered the best of the series is a pairing of Don and Peggy that was so tight our reactors called it a bottle episode. There is nothing fan servicy about pairing Don and Joan.

Julien

Bisexual panic?

Julien

Lakshmi made it abundantly clear that she wasn't cheating on Paul because that's not the nature of their relationship. I don't know why people keep saying she did.

Scott

I think Lakshmi seduced Harry because she wanted to inject some poison into the friendship between Harry & Paul, not necessarily because she was "making a trade". She probably felt as though Harry would be far less insistant on continuing communication with Paul if he knew that Lakshmi could bring up their little office romp at any time.

Julien

@Jaime: Jane's apartment likely costs a couple of millions in today's money. She would be in a good part of town. You're not buying anything in Manhattan for $300K.

Julien

Excellent point that I hadn't thought about. Finally after many years, her strategy makes some sense! In effect, she is blackmailing Harry.

on crip ...

Taya

Julien

Haha fair.

Julien

I saw them once in a park in Chicago a couple of years ago. Didn't know they were still around. They were dancing and singing that or something similar. Same vibes. Seemed fun tbh. I love that the series showed this aspect of 60s counter-culture. Lot was going on at the time with the youth.

tilden katz

Looking at real estate prices congruent with the inflationary rise of the dollar is useless when applied to Manhattan. Let's use The Apartment with Jack Lemmon, as an ad-hoc example. His character pays 85 buckeroos for a 1 bedroom near Central Park west in the 60's, in 1959. A 1959 dollar is about 11 dollars today. So, logic would dictate that, that apartment now would rent for 935. A 1 bed in the 60's anywhere near Central Park west goes for about 4 thousand, at least. So whatever place Roger bought for Jane from Jane Street, it's not in line with what the dollar bought back in 1966, as what that place would fetch today.

Julien

They’ve already seen it. Also, we don’t like expectation-setting comments.

Julien

The realities of the current NYC real estate market (beyond inflation) were accounted for above. Things weren’t just multiplied with a a generic inflation factor. Local conditions were accounted for. I live here. Jane’s apartment would cost a couple of millions today.

Kara

Not to bum you out but there is a near zero percent chance of them watching this. By the time a new slot opens in many, many months, the show won't be at all in the zeitgeist and there's a ton of shows they haven't watched it would lose to.

PIG

I usually don't like it either but LM clued in about the next episode above in the caption. Don't think it's all that bad in this case :)

Mark M

How dare you 😤

Infode

The Mohawk plane model that Joan breaks (the one Pete placed) foreshadows the Mohawk strike that further indirectly strains Lane by the end of the episode.

Kev

It's a great scene that demonstrates development in contrast to the past. It's almost hard to believe that Peggy was ever in competition with Paul just a couple seasons ago.

Kev

Why were you glad if you already knew the outcome before finishing the show? I'm just saying that because clearly by writing your comment you assume LM also know the outcome before finishing the show.

Josip

2026-09-19 14:00 Excluding Lane's plotline, I find everything about this episode hilarious. Also, Pete's line "no one has given me the reaction I desire from this blessed event" REALLY gives Dennis Reynolds / Patrick Bateman energy.

Kendall Roy 🇧🇷

Despite also thinking it's not necessary to create a lot of hype about specific episodes or seasons, this always happens and is even inevitable for reactors who have an established community, so it's pointless to get so angry every time it happens. In The Wire S4 they already knew it was going to be a great season because many people were already talking about it and the reactions were amazing anyway, in Sopranos they already had an idea of which female characters were hated and were already talking about it in the review of the first episode because they saw the names in a list, at the beginning of Black Sails they also had an idea of something specific that was going to happen soon and none of that changed the quality of the reactions for me I also think that hype should be avoided, but at the same time it's not something I take too seriously.

Jon Smith

Kev you are the only one smoking something and taking it out in the comments. The caption of the post mentions "why didn't you warn us about episode 11..." and "on crip..."'s comment was a joke in response to that. I'm not sure if you didn't read the full caption from LM but you missed that line and you are lashing out because someone called you out on that. Just take a deep breath and log off.

Kara

You can watch LM react to every episode of BCS on YouTube (or full lengths here) right now.

Mike

@Jamie are you saying Carlton can't join the Hare Krishnas???

Biberius Caldius Mero

Honestly, I'd it really interested to see them react to a comedy because I haven't seen them do that. And Curb your Enthusiasm is great. It would be a huge commitment though with 12 (albeit short) seasons.

Mitchell

Lol. Harry is definitely the worst

Mitchell

I also think she sleeps with him because it is an old trick called the honeypot. Now that she slept with harry she has something that will ruin Paul and Harry's relationship if she ever decides to tell Paul

Mahad Ali

Its Lane’s job that’s the problem. If he had another role, i could see forgiveness. And if he had other skills, i can see reassigning him. But the show has made it abundantly (clear) that Lane only has one skill — managing the books. And i just dont see how any sane person could let someone with admitted financial problems continue to manage the company money. Even if they are a good person, having all that money there for the taking can make them do things that they otherwise wouldn’t have done. So it would have been in the company’s interest and in Lane’s interest to separate him from that role. I just don’t see how Lane fessing up before hand could go any other way.

Mahad Ali

I’d also add, regarding the claim that he cant be fired because he is a partner, that isnt true. Not all partners are equal. Lane had far less equity in the firm than the other partners. The named partners Sterling, Cooper, Draper… and to a lesser extent Price, are all millionaires. Lane, without their equity is not. And is in some ways closer to an employee than to a named partner. So I dont think buying him out would have been that costly for them. Also, regarding his importance to the company. He is far from indispensable. All he does is balance the books, which is why he told Joan (in a previous episode) that she could do the work that he does. And also why Pete told him “we stopped needing u the day u fired us.”

Mahad Ali

I totally agree and think that they wanted to incorporate the Hare Krishna’s and then reverse engineered Paul’s return as a way to do that. Also, i once heard a tv writer say that u shouldn’t introduce a problem in an episode and then resolve it in the same episode. (I think he wrote for sopranos.) He said doing that makes the story feel a little cheap and manufactured. The Mad Men writers appear to break that rule with this storyline. I think they were familiar with that writing convention but wanted to incorporate the Hare Krishnas and didn’t have much time to do so. Which is why it feels a little convoluted and cheap.

Julien

No one was ever going to fire Lane because he is broke. That makes no sense. Nor could they. As a partner he can't be dismissed just because. Not even with a vote. Ultimately these things depend on the terms of the partnership contract but I am quite certain that SCDP's contract doesn't allow a partner to be ejected without cause (being broke is not a valid reason).

Chidi.

@Julien - what expectation does the word "prepare" set?

Sebastian

Does Pluribus get better? I watched about half of it, and honestly was pretty disappointed with how shallow it feels.

Deadwood fucking rules, but I'd still put in a vote for Six Feet Under next. It feels like it was tailor-made for them. (Also, why would you want them to watch something lighter? The whole fun of this reaction channel is to have two actually intelligent people dissect the themes of complex series for adults.)

tilden katz

Who would think the finale of season 3 is fan service? Fans of Betty, who finally get to see Don annihilated? Or, did that happen in the previous episode? Shut the Door, Have a Seat. is MM's greatest episode, because everyone is impacted. It's the Los Alomos episode, and marks the clear demarcation point of the entire series.

Even your short replies are gems. I love reading your perspective, whether I agree, or not. Especially, when I don't agree. I called the extended Don, Joan scene fan service, cause not one person hasn't imagined those 2 in a flirty/ maybe this will happen, scenario. We all know it wouldn't be good, and we don't care. In the end we got something even better; Don confirming his high regard, and esteem for Joan. For once, Don doesn't behave like a dick.

Shut the Door, is the episode that Don is torn to pieces. Is that winning? That he manages to pull a 'Win' out of it by the end is a testament to his resourcefulness. Maybe watching Don with his tail between his legs, as Roger put it, IS a win for a large portion of the audience. LOL

Sami

In term of how he's mentally stable I mean, for the most part he's better than ever.

Sami

I felt that way because they barely interact with each other, idk maybe not even a handful scenes and now they are like BFF, for example it would have felt more natural if it was Peggy in that situation instead of Joan because of how much they know each other.

As shitty as this sounds, but......thank God Peggy isn't hot enough for Don, or he'd be fuckin up 8 ways till Sunday with her. Peggy is the Madonna of Don's world. She's untouchable, and pure, in his eyes. (Regardless of the fact that Don knows "people DO things".) A big reason why she is the de facto love of his life.

Sebastian

My interest in characters over plot is exactly my issue with it though. To me, the high concept overshadowed everything to the point where there's barely any characters interacting at all. I just don't see it working while Rhea has to carry everything on her shoulders while the entire rest of the cast is basically one recurring gag. I miss some relatable humanity.

Dante

Not to get into spoilers, but with how the season ends I think there will definitely bee some more relatable humanity in S2. But I also don't think someone should have to watch an entire season of something they aren't into. Maybe wait to hear about reviews for S2? In like 3 years lol

on crip ...

hell yeah i still got it. 4 words 11 replies kept it pg too

Fortunately, video tapes haven't been invented yet. Pete has no need to return them.

Why not something light, but substantial. A pinot grigio of a show for them imbibe on. Curb, The Larry Sanders Show. Yes, Im dating myself, but Deadwood is good not great, and only greatness, or near- great should occupy space here. Im still waiting for Godpappy Part 2. Then they could do Network, Chinatown, The Hustler, amd Lawrence of Arabia.
