Most predictable thumbnail ever? Megan and Sylvia were talking about miscarriage/abortion in the context of growing up Catholic (you can see the crucifix on Sylvia's wall later when she goes to bed with Don). Sylvia claims she'd never consider an abortion, because *gestures at God*. Kind of flies in the face of cheating on your husband in your marriage bed while the JC looks on from the wall, but I guess people are complicated. I like the connection they are drawing between Pete & Herb here, and the connection they are drawing between Don & Pete... which means a connection between Don & Herb. Don can stick his nose up all he wants at the dirty business with Jaguar -- refusing to shake Herb's hand, etc. -- but he's rolling around in the same mud as Pete & Herb, no matter how holier-than-thou he acts. I know some people have "Don is cheating" fatigue by this point in the show, but I think it treats this affair with less romance than anything that's come before, and that's significant. This is dirty business.

I haven't even watched the video yet but WE WERE ALL WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!!!!!

The name of the company is still "Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce" (SCDP). That is its own legal entity, even regardless of who is a partner at any one time. They could change the name if they wanted to, but that is a separate process than gaining or losing a partner (For example, the name for "Sterling Cooper" didn't change when Don became a partner at the end of season one). When they formed SCDP at the end of season three and Roger & Don were trying to recruit Pete, they specifically talked about NOT putting his name in the title of the company at first until he earned it later on. For the question of what happened to Lane's partnership, SCDP paid out the value of his shares to his wife after his death, so his partnership disappeared. I believe the only remaining partners are now Roger, Bert, Don, Pete, and Joan. Roger, Bert, and Don are "senior partners", while Pete and Joan are "junior partners". I love -- love LOVE LOVE -- the way Trudy demolishes Pete here. She doesn't ask any questions or give him any opportunity to explain or justify his actions. She KNOWS what he does. She's known for a long time. She doesn't have any doubts about it at all. But she's been willing to let it slide as long as Pete hid it well enough to let her pretend. But when Pete can't even do that any more, she stops pretending immediately. She kicks him out, she refuses to let him have ANY emotional leverage, and she doesn't even let him salve his pride by leting him see her cry or angst about it. She is in total control and she is DONE. Pete's line about her not knowing anything for certain was his attempt to reclaim some power in the dynamic. He wanted to imagine her tormented by indecision once he walked out the door. But she refused to engage and so now HE is tormented.

I'm pretty sure the conversation between Sylvia and Megan was about abortion, not about being a mother in general. Megan said she felt relieved that she didn't have to make a decision because the miscarriage made it for her. Sylvia said she couldn't relate because she would never make that decision. So yeah, go ahead and judge the woman whose husband you're actively sleeping with Sylvia! What a great Catholic. I actually do like Sylvia as a character though. The dichotomy between her apparently strong religious beliefs and her very immoral affair is interesting to me.

Taya

Part of what makes it appealing is that it's bad. The sneaking around, the wrongness of it, the potential of getting caught. Plus people want to maintain the stability of a (boring) long term partner while enjoying something new and exciting on the side. (not that I'm condoning it lol)

Eric Viola

In Season 4, Pete guilted his father in law into giving him the rest of Vick Chemical + keeping Pond's which was in conflict with Clearasil. Pete kicked Clearasil over to Ken's former firm but it got snatched up by CGC.

tilden katz

Why do they get to decide? The more things change, the more they stay the same.

tilden katz

For real. Don needs to limit his exposure.

tilden katz

Bowl Cut Dick actor, is looking almost as old as Jon Hamm. Man, did that kid shoot up in height. Don saying he wants to "stop this" with Sylvia. Does he think she'll be the last one, cause he thinks he can only do this so many times? Or, is it that he actually sees some hope for him in being a better person?

tilden katz

The affair is just Don resetting to master, as Matt Weiner likes to call it. Megan didn't become the compliant wife he wanted, so he's free to be the bad husband he is 'supposed' to be. Don lost the lavender haze with Megan faster, (less than 2 years) than Roger did with Jane. "This is how you're supposed to behave". For guys who see themselves as a couple of sharp cynics, they sure are dumb.

The look on Trudy's face as she walked into the bedroom was a flashing neon sign that says "I KNOW WHAT YOU DID, PETER"

Robert

Pete is the best character probably on the show. lol. Like what is your issue with him. He has saved don multiple times. He has saved the company with jaguar. he did what needed to be done. he is right everything craps on him and theyre sorry butts would be done for without him. Theyd be under without jaguar. His issues with trudy and women are separate, but everyone owes pete. hes not don draper to make the big bullspit speech to defend himself, but ive always liked him, he is pretty funny when hes not trying to be, and i consider his background and the time and he's amusing. i never hated him.

Robert

also joan was with roger when he was married with mona and peggy slept with pete when he was engaged. but no one mentions that. plus joan sleeping with roger again cheating on greg.

"Let's not laugh at Ken" you guys are reading too much into things lol. Friends take the mick out of one another all the time

We're at the point of only 12 more weeks of Mad Men. Going to miss revisiting this show with your commentary and discussion. Don't want it to end!

Sebastian

People love / are afraid to leave their partners / want to keep them in their lives, yet also want the thrill of something new. I don't think I could ever cheat, but it's not eactly a mystery why people do it.

Taya

I understand why L&M hate him. However... by this point it's no surprise that he's a terrible person, that's been long established. Why not just enjoy the character for the humor and theatrics that he brings to the show? Because he really is so ridiculous and entertaining to watch.

Sebastian

“He has more loyalty to the beans than to his wife” is such a perfect summary of Don’s character. I've always been fascinated by how he has such a sense of justice and loyalty to the clients, is the one who speaks up against dropping Mohawk etc, yet he takes none of that home with him. It's like he's completely compartmentalized the cheating as something that does not count.

Kev

I think the joke about Sylvia sending money to their kid (note: joke) was about Arnold not knowing how she spends her money and/or saying she is too soft on their son, who probably likes his mom more than his dad.

2026-09-19 14:00 There needs to be a study done on how Pete has exactly the same flaws he had in the first episode of the series, but somehow they were completely enamored with him in the beginning of the show, for at least two seasons.

Kev

Sylvia is very Catholic, despite the adultery. So yes she felt bad when consoling Megan but then when Megan brought up feeling relieved about having a miscarriage that made her turn cold and it's why she said what she did, even urging Megan to listen to her guilt. In a twisted way, Sylvia probably lost some of the guilt in that moment because here is Megan also committing "sin" by having complicated feelings about a miscarriage.

2026-09-19 14:00 I like the unspoken moment where Don lets Joan have his office for a bit to drink and be alone.

Trudy laying down the law is a scene I could watch all day, I love how flabbergasted Pete is. The revelation that it's the appearances that Trudy cares about is a great one, I joked with another patron about this a while ago when LM was like "Unlike Betty, Trudy would not stand for cheating and would immediately leave him if she found out", only for that to not be the thing she cares about. Amidst this season opening with cynicism is Pete cheating so soon after that poignant self-aware monologue in the S5 finale. You would think that he actually took something from that scene, but instead he has already reverted back to his old ways so casually. That's the ironic part, the affair that he probably thought of the least, that he just did because it was there, is the one that leaves him standing there dumbfounded as Trudy destroys him. He had a conscience and a chance, but he ignored it and that karmically contributes to why his punishment here is so immediate and ruthless. If he had just quit while he was ahead, which he showed signs of being able to do, maybe things would be different. He had a chance to give up his vices, but he couldn't help himself and it happened to be the one thing his wife would no longer tolerate.

Kev

It's similar in "The New Girl", such a heavy contrast between how he treats Peggy and how he treats Betty. Also "Christmas Waltz", how he treats Joan and how he treats Megan.

tilden katz

Peggy and Joan are women that Don admires. His wives???........are you kidding.

tilden katz

LM only like well adjusted male characters. The fun is with the villains, and grimy little pimps. They should know that, but their indignation at the trespasses of the Bad Men just consumes them.

tilden katz

Most married people (men) are not capable of getting side action. Have you seen what the typical 40 year old American looks like nowadays? I know, I know, its not all about looks, but still..... So, when they actually land someone, they try to hold on to the side piece like grim death.

tilden katz

Yes! Best single moment of the episode.

bondbond53

Why would you say that, this makes me sad now

Jay- Esque

I swear their hatred for Pete boils down to the fact that his looks have declined considerably over the course of the show. There are several characters who are more reprehensible within the office.

Mitchell Atkins

It wasn’t that she wasn’t the compliant wife…. It’s a total misreading of Don… Don is not the actual person… it’s two-fold, if Don doesn’t cheat, it would be what his actual self is and a reminder of dick and his trauma, but mostly, he actually goes into relationships being loyal because he’s looking for actual love, love that he didn’t get growing up… he realized long ago with Betty that she didn’t truly love him deeply but if you notice he was loyal all last season with Megan and there were no flashbacks of his past either because he was in “love” but when Megan asked for that part he realized she actually didn’t love him but the idea of him and what he could do for her, so him watching her film was him letting her go and the possibility of her actually loving him, so it shows him walk away at the end… and now when he doesn’t have that “love” with Megan, his past trauma is showing back up in the form of flashbacks

Jamie

I'm curious who you would say is more reprehensible than Pete (Don?)

Jay- Esque

Well Don of course, but that’s also why he’s the main character. Joan and Roger are equally detestable. Betty also has her ill wills about her. Everyone’s vulnerabilities manifest uniquely, but Pete’s clearly a little uglier and dorkier so he’s the worst. Their disdain for him solidified after Joan’s situation with Herb and that’s just it: Joan chose to do something with certain conditions and they’re up Pete’s ass about it. Joan expressly made the mission more beneficial to herself prior to agreeing. Thus making it less of an exploitative sexual deed and more of a business transaction. (And no, I personally would’ve never taken to Joan)

Jamie

The rape episode was the turning point. They actually explain this very thing in that reaction (why they found him endearing in the beginning, despite him always being terrible). It would've been interesting to see how their feelings evolved without the rape.

Darrach

I love the little smirk Roger has as he watches Don purposefully bomb the Jaguar pitch, just enjoying seeing the sabotage in real time.

Andrew

I'm sorry, the only people more detestable than Pete are Harry and Don. Roger is literally the only person in the entire office, working on bettering himself, but even without that, he is not nearly as bad as the others. And I don't see what Joan ever did wrong other than cheating on her rapist-husband once.

Sebastian

"They hate Pete because his hairline's receded, not because he constantly cheats, pimped out a coworker, and raped an au pair" is a pretty incel level take, my dude. (I love Pete as a character, but as a dude he's pretty scummy.)

Jay- Esque

The incident with the Au Pair completely slipped my mind. My apologies. I have to stand by the fact that Pete has stated and proven to respect Joan as a person even if we’re only talking about the Herb incident. Pete’s been witness to the grimy business practices for years already, why is telling Joan (someone who is no stranger to deceptive & unethical sexual encounter — cheating and sleeping with married men) about a chance to elevate the company and herself such an evil?

ryany

I always felt like Dick Whitman, through his trauma and life experience, is incapable of loving/admiring a woman he has sex with. Don Draper is the character he plays and that character needs to have a wife. Betty/Megan are just part of the facade of Don Draper and he certainly doesn't love these women. The only women he is capable of loving/admiring are women he has a relationship with that doesn't include sex. Anna, Peggy, Joan, etc. I sense there is connections to them having aspects of a mother figure for him in some ways, but that is getting in to the weeds and above my pay grade

Jay- Esque

You’re correct as I may be undercutting the manipulative undertones of Pete’s proposal. However, it is not an illusion of choice. She had options. Once said options had been laid out Joan then revised the situation to be more beneficial to her (understandably so) and Pete agrees. And Joan sleeping with Roger is something I’m accounting for as it’s indicative of the clear and obvious fact that Joan isn’t oblivious or unaware of her environment. The whole situation surrounding her child and the 2 potential “fathers” is especially unethical😂 It is what it is. We pick and choose.

mad men in their soap opera bag with this one

Dante

I truly think a large reason for them liking Pete so quickly and early on were all the comments saying things like "They are going to love Pete" or "Pete is the next My Boy" and other things to that effect. I saw many of these after Mad Men won the poll and early on in the first season alluding to how they were supposedly going to love his character

on crip ...

@Jamie ya, if pete has the exact same flaws as in season 1, then the answer is in the question

on crip ...

im curious, why is pete the best character in the show for you?

tilden katz

Pete is the best character, even though Roger gets all the best lines. Pete is an evil man, without being J.R. Ewing cartoonishly evil. He harms people, and thinks nothing of it. Whereas he sees himself as a pitiable victim because of 'circumstance', (not pretty, though hes not ugly, not suave, though he can be coercive,) and not receiving the credit he deserves from others. Disgusting. He has some self-awareness, but just bathes in his bitterness without trying to do anything about it. He LIKES the mendacity. Its his default setting. Watching him wander to wherever he lands on the evil spectrum, is the most fun part of the show. Its also the thing to hate most about the show. Watching someone who is basically irredeemable, chips away at your soul.

Double H

This is definitely the first time I came across a Pete defender hahahah

Robert

Chat GPT: is pete on mad men evil? “Evil” is probably too strong—but Pete Campbell is definitely a walking bundle of entitlement, insecurity, and bad choices. Pete isn’t a cartoon villain. He’s more like a painfully realistic guy who thinks the world owes him something because of his name and education… and then gets angry when it doesn’t deliver. A few things that shape how people read him: He’s selfish and manipulative a lot of the time, especially early on. He’ll betray coworkers, leverage power, and cross ethical lines if it helps him get ahead. He feels perpetually humiliated, and that resentment curdles into cruelty. Pete often hurts people because he feels small, not because he enjoys being cruel. He does have a conscience, which is key. Unlike some characters on Mad Men, Pete actually feels guilt and shame—he just doesn’t always know what to do with those feelings. He grows (unevenly, messily). Over the series, you see him become more self-aware and occasionally decent, even if he backslides. So: not evil. More like toxic, privileged, emotionally stunted, and sometimes awful—which is kind of the point of Mad Men. Pete is what happens when ambition outpaces character. If you want, I can compare him to Don, Roger, or Harry and rank who’s actually the worst 👀

on crip ...

it's true, other characters have consistent, or additional, flaws across the show's run. that demonstrates persisting flaws don't predict a character's likeability. amusingly, betty is often adored or abhorred, so viewer disposition also affects a character's likability. so it's not: likeability waning = character + (persisting) flaws it's more like: likeability waning = viewer disposition + specific character + specific actions + specific (persistent) flaws which the statement "Pete has exactly the same flaws he had in the first episode of the series, but somehow they were completely enamored with him in the beginning of the show." hints towards, given LM's disposition

on crip ...

oh shit. very true. never thought about it, but pete is written extremely well

Kev

3 polar bears died so you could have a robot argue about a tv show for you...

Mack

I love Pete as a character but there is no one who is a recurring character that is worse than Pete. Even Harry is not worse… Harry is annoying and unlikable but Pete is a genuinely awful husband, co worker, he has stabbed multiple people in the back, he’s vindictive and has done some of the most deplorable things.

Mack

Im sorry I know we cant condone Don’s cheating but the scene with him tellin Sylvia, “you want to feel shitty up until the point I take your clothes off” was some fly ass shit talking.

Mack

What makes Mad Men great is that the portrayal of these characters are very realistic and so with Sylvia, that is a real portrayal… some people know what they’re doing is wrong and try to talk themselves through the guilt they’re feeling… despite knowing that they really dont want to stop. I’ve seen a lot of Sylvia’s in real life. Hell Im sure I’ve been Sylvia (as a man) before. The portrayal is excellent… I always liked her character the most out of all Don’s mistresses.
