You finished Book 1 out of 17. 16 more to go! :D EDIT: It's based on a book series, not a manga! 😤🤣

Hi! My comments for this episode: This episode also marks the end of the first volume of The Apothecary Diaries light novel, which the anime adapted across its first twelve episodes. In imperial China, serious crimes such as treason or rebellion could result in collective punishment, extending beyond the offender to relatives and sometimes other associates. This helps explain why the investigation into Fengming also involves identifying her family's connections. In this episode, around eighty of the two thousand women serving in the rear palace are affected, including Maomao, because the merchant family who bought her from her kidnappers had business ties to Fengming's family. It was Gaoshun who secretly arranged Jinshi and Maomao's reunion. When he realizes that replacing Maomao won't solve Jinshi's unhappiness, he decides to contact a military officer. Later, Maomao mentions that Lihaku introduced the Three Princesses to the officials hosting the banquet. Connecting these clues suggests that Gaoshun used Lihaku's connections to bring Jinshi and Maomao together. There's a beautiful visual detail in this episode that connects to the flower symbolism we discussed back in Episode 7. Right after Jinshi's indirect kiss, the Three Princesses of the Verdigris House question Maomao about him, and the scene transitions to a flower arrangement representing all four women. It features white kobushi magnolias on the left for Pairin, pink chrysanthemums on the right for Joka, and pink plum blossoms across the front for Meimei. Nestled among them is a tiny yellow katabami, or yellow wood sorrel, representing Maomao. Katabami is also known as "cat's paw" in Japanese. When Jinshi pays Granny to bring Maomao back into his employment, he isn't purchasing her as a courtesan. Maomao owes Granny money after arranging Lihaku's expensive visit with Pairin, and Jinshi's payment settles her obligations to the Verdigris House so she can work for him instead. Although Maomao believes Granny might force her into prostitution, that's her assumption rather than something we know Granny would actually do. The unusual gift Jinshi brings Maomao at the end of the episode is a fungus called Ophiocordyceps sinensis. It infects moth larvae, eventually killing them and producing a stalk that grows out of their bodies. It has long been prized in traditional Chinese medicine. The Last of Us was inspired by a related cordyceps fungus, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, which infects ants and manipulates their behavior, earning it the nickname of zombie ant fungus

AH yes, the ladies first "He's a freak!!!!" first of many probably, lol. What I absolutely love about this show is that as great of a character as MaoMao is, Jinshi is also right there with her in terms of layers and dynamics. He's truly a fascinating character in his own right and for both of them it's clear as day that their personalities is a product of their upbringing. The rest of this season but definitely next season is top tier!!!!

Between Jinshi doing that and Maomao being so excited by that fungus, I believe we're looking at two freaks. 😂
