Oof, yeah, that episode and episode 21 is tough. Also, with regards to Hange's gender, this portion of their wiki page may answer your question to some extent (don't worry, no spoilers here!): "The manga's author, Hajime Isayama, has left Hange's gender open to interpretation as he told his editor that 'either one is fine' and instructed Kodansha Comics not to confirm any gender in their translation. Since then, Kodansha has removed gendered pronouns for Hange in their translation and clarified that indeed, Hange's gender is up to the reader's interpretation. The anime and the live-action movie, on the other hand, have consistently depicted Hange as female or with more pronounced feminine traits, as well as many manga translations into languages where avoiding gendered pronouns is difficult or impossible."

Nope, non-binary. They only use she/her in the subtitles because English uses more pronouns than Japanese. In Japanese, they never specify Hange's gender, and the voice actor was told to play Hange as non-binary.

I think it was the director of the anime (I could be wrong) that said he can’t speak for Isayama but Hanji can be whoever you want and people who attack each other and argue about who Hanji is are completely missing the point because whether Hanji is male or female isn’t important

I don't know if non-binary is the word, in this case is just open to public's interpretation... If is a man or a woman, it doesn't matter. To me Hange is a woman, cause it's easear to me to realate to female. But even if it bothers you (I really do'nt know why) don't be disrespectful Maurizio, as you said: ''You can't push your beliefs to other people''. We are not discussing biology or psychology here. Maurizio, I think you're confusing sex and gender. while sex is biological, quantifiable and bimodal, gender is a social construct, and changes depending on culture and region. While Hanji's sex is female, that has nothing to do with their gender identity. You can claim that "the majority of people don't believe in that crap" yet the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization and the vast majority of studies confirm that gender identity is not binary or bimodal and it is separate from sex. You're taking the anti-science stance here, my friend.

in the end hanji in the anime got female voice actress so i personaly call they "her" but i heard from reliable source that no one called her "he or "she" in the manga (aswell as any gender traces)... so call hanji however YOU want.. just know that part of nice info
