Hyde, World’s Best Shoggoth

I’d keep my pregnant meat close to the work table (right) and my belongings further away (straight)

Rabid’n’Cheez

I feel like straight ahead is too simple. Along that this is a lair, so there should be a few twist and turns here and there.

Nicky

Right = masonry, more like an actual building Straight = natural stone, likely more tunnels. Also have to get closer to the green stagnant water (and whatever’s lurking in there) for the length of the room

Megs

I’m sure there’s horror behind both doors, we just need to make sure we don’t get a tie 😂

Theta

I'm leaning right personally.... Something tells me that the straight ahead door is a red herring

Heather Bruce

Yorick keeps saying womb, though this is more a house. I think avoiding straight ahead for now is good. (Where's the freaking rogue when you need them?)

Amanda Nicole

Something tells me to choose right. It can't be as simple as "go straight ahead."

vol_ctrl

I think the door to our right, being near the slab and what seems like a work area based on the description, is not going to contain what we seek or lead toward the inner sanctum. Meanwhile, I think the door ahead, which appears to be set into the natural stone, presumably older, seems more like it could be an inner sanctum where the witch might store valuable/precious items. More so than all of that, though: if we turn right to open the door, we leave our back exposed to the stagnant water and the rest of the room. This is the critical reason I think we should forge straight ahead.

GPTC

This is almost a tie I'm so scared. It was tied when I voted and my heart dropped

Layali

I think since the hag's home is described to have floor made of cracked stone, and if I've understood correctly, the right door is also made of the same material, then the right door should be a proper part of her home, and going through it would be going further into her 'inner sanctum'. But I'm not 100% sure it's the right door that's the same as the floor of this lab area.

Nicky

It’s made of similar material and style as the windmill, so may just be another way in to the tunnel system with the true *inner* sanctum being through the more natural rock wall

Layali

This is gonna be one of those decisions where the right choice is pretty obvious looking back huh 🥲

Liz

I've been considering this off and on for a few days now, and I don't really know that there's an excellent way to puzzle this out. However, here's the facts that I think are worthwhile to consider: 1) That Yorick felt the need to mention that the hag is "cleverer than [Arthur and John]" and that she would have multiple exits to her lair, and then goes on to specify that she would have three exits. 2) That one of the doors (the one to the right) is set into stonework consistent with a built structure. 3) That this area is 30 feet down from the balcony that was already underground. 4) The the other door (the one straight ahead) is set into natural stone. 5) There is a large pool of murky water in this room. Now, working from these points, I think we can draw a few different conclusions that are - if not fact - at least probable. Firstly, that the structure that the stonework belongs to is unlikely to be part of the windmill or even a peasant building. Now, my reasoning for ruling out the windmill itself is because the cellar part of the windmill that we entered the tunnels from was already dirt floor at that point below ground. I find it highly unlikely that there would be further masonry under what ought to be the bottom portion of that building. Additionally, building something significantly underground would likely be uncommon outside of very large buildings during this era. One might expect it of a castle, or perhaps a mine, but a flour mill would likely not have a basement of significant depth. Now, on the other hand, we have the door that leads into the natural stone. There's no reason to believe that this will lead into anything other than a dead end, although it could equally lead into yet more tunnels. Regardless, this is significantly more likely to not be easily accessible through any way other than moving through either "the backdoor" as Arthur has done, or entering through whatever front entrance she has by way of what may be a ruined building of some kind. If I were inclined to secure something that I do not want thieves to access easily, I would put it as near to the center of my home as possible, in a place that does not contain any direct routes to the outside. And my intuition says that the door straight ahead is more likely to be that. Now that's where my thoughts on this poll that are firmly rooted in common sense and the facts as we know them end, and where I start getting a bit more speculative begins. So, if you want to stop here, and not consider my more paranoid musings, this is a good point to consider my arguments so far, and take them on their merits. Let's start with what a green hag can do in D&D 5E: (Here I originally attached a screenshot of a stat block for green hags from D&D Beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16911-green-hag ) I'd like to draw particular attention to amphibious, and the spell minor illusion. (Note that I also dropped a screenshot of the spell minor illusion, which indicate that this spell can make fearsome sounds) I draw attention to that spell in particular, because of the odd and terrifying noise that we heard right before the torch was blown out. And I draw attention to amphibious because of the pool of water, and how odd it was that Harlan felt so strongly that this needed to be included that he made a point to re-upload the chapter. It may just be my paranoia speaking, but I'm inclined to think that there is something lurking in that water. And given Yorick's insistence on calling this creature a hag (in a very pointed manner), and the fact that hags are often associated with water in real folklore and have a particular type of them in D&D that clearly references this folklore tradition, makes me nearly certain that the hag that we may encounter could be lurking, unseen beneath that pool of water. "Although not necessarily smarter than other hags, and they were highly knowledgeable, green hags were certainly the most cunning and duplicitous, outmatching the other subraces in their ability to tempt, persuade and manipulate,[7][10] and doing so happily from behind webs of lies and secret intentions.[1] Even the most basic plots of the green hags were devious, involving the use of their particular abilities to lure travelers to specific places in their swamps for some nefarious purpose. They could mimic cries for help or fearsome noises depending on where they wanted their victims to go, and that was for their simpler schemes." - quoted from https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Green_hag This particular bit of information from a wiki on D&D hags makes me side-eye Yorick's insistence that the hag is more clever than both Arthur and John. I bring all of this up, in part because I think it makes an uncomfortable amount of sense, especially coupled with the knowledge that S5 is at a minimum related to the unplayed D&D 5E Blackstone campaign that was teased at the end of Call of Cthulhu Game 2, but also to point out that if this hag also frequently rests or hides in that pool, knowing that unwitting human victims would not expect her to be able to stay perfectly submerged without drowning for excessive lengths of time, having the only way to get to her most treasured possession be to pass by her pool where she can ambush and attempt to drown them makes sense. (Noting that entering this room either from the door set into stone masonry or from the balcony stairs and heading toward the door set into natural stone requires you to go by the pool.) I think the talisman is behind the door straight ahead, but there's a high likelihood we may be ambushed by the hag in the process of going after it. I also am not confident we'll get a second shot at searching that door.

Veneza Shade

I know we're mostly queer people here, but we need to go STRAIGHT! NO TIEEEESSS

Veneza Shade

Ugh... Guys... I feel I little silly rn.... Maybe right Was right all along, who knows????

Nicky

Since Mal is somewhat associated with the Call of Cthulu RPG, do we know anything about hags in that system? Also, I’ve been leaning toward the inner sanctum being in the water itself, actually

Fisher

THE DOOR TO THE RIGHT HAS A HATCHET AND A WORK TABLE. THERE’S GONNA BE PREGNANT MEAT IN IT. WE HAVE TO GO DEEPER IN, PICK STRAIGHT AHEAD!!!!!

Aebriel

C'mon y'all, untie this asap please

Daisy

RIGHT IS RIGHT! We still have 5 hours and 42 minutes to get back on the right track!!

Alder

There is nothing good that can come of going into the workroom on the right. That's no sanctum, just a workspace! Head straight for the cozy place hidden away in the earth! More seriously, we shouldn't turn our vulnerable back towards the water, either way. A flank is more defensible because peripheral vision.

Veneza Shade

NO TIES EVERYBODY PLEASE NO TIEEEESSS 🚫👔

Veneza Shade

NO TIES‼️ WE DON'T WANT THE AWFUL CONSEQUENCES, DO WE⁉️

Heather Bruce

Still new here - question. Is thw rule of "no ties" an actual rule or derived from patreon experience? Cause I agree, don't tie, but did Mr. Harlan ever say or is it merely inferred from consequences?

Veneza Shade

Yes, the tie is “breaking the rule” - if we tie, we gonna get the worst consequences, so everything is better then a tie, i suggest looking on our wiki for the poll data!

Veneza Shade

The poll is closed, it’s closed at 8am EST

SavageIvyy

Weird this morning when I checked it showed Right ahead by 2%. I was up 9am MTN

Nicky

Yeah, Harlan has shared his opinion that indecision /failure to make a decision about or commit to a course of action is the worst possible outcome. He views a tie vote as representing failure to make a decision, so the outcome must reflect that and be terrible in a way that is not “fun,” only punishing. This has played out in the few ties that have occurred in the history of the show -no decision how to start the conversation at the bookstore so Ackerman wasn’t even there and Arthur was shot at (in background COC games Ackerman is an excellent ally and souce of info) -no decision about whether to wait or leave when the lighthouse keeper stepped out so the magic light went out/broke and the guy died horrifically

Heather Bruce

Not to mention the intentional tie between Arthur and John, leading to Arthur getting Yellow and John in the Dark World. I just wanted to be sure it wasn't something I was reading into. Thanks! Also, my first voting being this close stressed me out. Lol
