Yorick's right, she IS a queen putting John on blast like that.

Emily LoCicero

Hearing John defend humanity makes me smile

SeerOfTime

This was honestly one of my absolute favorite chapters since becoming a Patron. The WAVES of chills I received were unmatched.

NotKayne

I have a feeling the "Mother Darkness" is Shub-Niggurath.

AUGHH MY BABIESSS <33333

Heather Bruce

So this is why he made Devisor. Not for the (brilliant) story, but practice on the unsettling soundscaping. (Also, the thought of Arthur waking up full of maggots slithered in my head and made my whole being shudder in horror)

SavageIvyy

I kinda had the same immediate thought. Despite not being a major player she keeps popping up in conversation

Heather Bruce

But she got deleted. Though maybe treating Kayne as a reliable narrator is prob a bad idea...

SavageIvyy

Two things: via Kayne she left a stain on this reality and Arthur actually saw the black goat waaay back in Season 1 at the library. And a theory my husband and I have is that Kayne may not even intentionally be misleading us there. He's reporting what he saw, and she wasnt where she normally would be. He's smart but not all knowing, and he may have just lost the ball in a giant cosmic cup and ball game. Also she's the mother of 1000 young. Fun idea. Could one of those young become a new Shubby if she died? Like a new queen taking the place of a dead queen bee?

Konnstant

im thinking if we keep it, maggots and if we give it, maggots its a loose loose situation T-T

I feel like these choices are building up to a final choice in this episode. What I mean to say is: the first choice and the second choice are both technically ‘meaningless’. As in whatever choice we take has little immediate difference. We told the truth, but as we see in this episode Yorrick would’ve picked up the slack if we’d lied, and told the ‘truth’ himself. This second choice - to tell her where we left the talisman. I mean, she’s going to find it with or without our help. Last episode, Yorrick said it was smart of us to hide it in the walls. Maybe it was, maybe she wouldn’t have found it as easily - but she has the Leng item now which word for word John just told her ‘would guide her to what she desires’. The choices we’re being given aren’t in changing what will happen (in the immediate moment), just how it will happen. The first choice to tell the truth didn’t impress the Queen, but it inspired truth from her too - John made an argument he truly believed in, and she had to make one she believed in as well, to shut him down. The 2nd choice won’t likely make her forgive us, but it might affect the results of a choice later on. With each choice we invite something from her - the 1st: truth, the 2nd: ? (Maybe trust, since she clearly had an issue with thinking every word John said was a lie, instead of accusing him of sentimentality or anything else. She met every word he said with ‘lie! Lie!’ Until she ended the episode with a truth of her own, then a question for him to answer. And I don’t know, I think accusations often reflect a person’s ideals/etc. like she could’ve accused him of being sentimental, and revealed by that that she disdains of humanity bc they’re weak. But she takes issue with him possibly lying - then when she realizes he’s not, that he’s then misguided.) With each choice maybe we can impress something on her. Or maybe we’ll get a final choice at the end that, if we lied the whole episode, deciding to tell the truth at the end wouldn’t be met well by the Queen who will find our words unreliable. We might lock ourselves out of a choice we could’ve taken. Or maybe depending on our choices, we could ‘unlock’ a new set of choices later on that we wouldn’t be able to access otherwise. I feel like for this episode, I’m personally going to see it as a set of choices that will mean something in the end - not a single choice that will change everything in the moment. A cumulative stock, that could bear dividends (or at least shape a new identity for John, or a new frontier to be explored, with Arthur). I don’t know, I’m really sleepy so I’m sure I don’t make any sense. Maybe tomorrow I’ll reorganize my thoughts. (I’m tempted though to have the Queen use the glass of Leng just to see what exactly she ‘desires’. Like obv the talisman but maybe it will shed light on why she desires it, etc. or surprise us with a new discovery about her.) (And in this episode, John is more human than he ever could be. The type of human that both he and the Queen can agree on - powerless, with no real freedom of choice. How often do people get choices that can have an immediate impact on their life? But more than that, a lot of being human is living with an unchangeable reality, and being faced with meaningless choices. It’s like the whole ‘do not go gently into the night’ where either way you’re going to die, but you can decide how you approach it, or how you face it. Surrender, fight, accept, save your energy, pick your battles…it’s the sort of ‘humanity’ you can only learn when trapped in a flesh and blood vessel, the way every human being is, and the way John is right now. I mean the whole concept of dignity is to do with traversing the indignities of life, like with the whole ‘dignity in defeat’. And the ‘you have a choice’ but it’s unfair shtick was already introduced to John with Kayne and the poor guy whose head got blown off. Ohhh I’m not making any sense, off to bed with me.)

manderpantz

if we lie, i have a feeling that Yorick is just going to snitch on us anyway so i'm leaning towards tell her where it is...for now...this one is really doing a "brain.exe has stopped working" on me

Rook

Lmao John trying so hard to throw his weight around when he has zero leverage with this woman is hilarious. "I'm a god!" Honey, all you are is lunch. I think its a coin flip for the next one. Worms if we do, worms if we don't. I'm gonna say lie though. I'm nothing if not spiteful and if we're going to die anyway I say we be a dick about it.

SavageIvyy

I'm really having a hard time seeing either option going well. We give her what she wants, we have no leverage. We don't, she finds it anyway and we still have no leverage but now she's cranky about it. The only hope is that maybe just maybe, the Leng shows her something other than the talisman

Brie

Well, from the sound of it, I'm sure this SWEET person will show us mercy if we just give back what we stole from her home. She seems like the kind to forgive and forget 😄😒

Nicky

In which case it isn’t about the destination but the journey…

Positive

"I am the king in yellow" are you, though? IS this the truth? But also LMAO I knew she wouldn't know who the king in yellow is. "Oh I'm sorry, whomst?"

HakureiRyuu

yeah, but also... yorric. bj's "you may not get another chance" gives me pause.

MomoTheMoogle

I feel like you could be on to something here. What you said also brings to my mind when Harlan said that this season will go deeper into the exploration and development of John as a person (just paraphrasing). In John's dealings with the Queen here, and going based on what you said, it does feel like we're sort of helping to shape who John is, by way of how he engages with the Queen. I don't see what we would have to gain by lying to her when we could easily be outed by Yorick and the glass of Leng. Unless John suddenly manifests a power (which is doubtful because Arthur is in such a weak state and it would feel a bit too much like a deus ex machina in this early part of the season), the only "power" he really has in this situation is his voice and how he chooses to interact with the Queen. Why sow distrust when it likely won't do any good and may just set us back even further?

MomoTheMoogle

The "you may not get another chance" at the end has me properly terrified...between the bad decision of going after the talisman and my Call of Cthulhu group recently failing utterly with our most recent scenario, yeah I'm scared of where these choices might take us 😰

MomoTheMoogle

Yeah, he's really getting us good with these choices. I feel like we're getting extra horror out of this podcast because we have to face the horror of our own decisions 😭

Brie

Might as well keep it then. At least then we'll have maggots AND a powerful amulet!

NotKayne

Plus with that strange woman that we saw in the portal a few episodes ago, it could be the remaining fragment of her.

Layali

Sowing distrust is exactly the phrase I was looking for! To be honest, it’s not necessarily that I want to John to tell the truth. I just want the Hag to take whatever he says in the future at face value. But the more I think on the choices we’re presented with (tell her where it is VS keep it hidden) the less I feel like I choosing to share the glass’ location will serve the aim we want it to. The way I wish it could go is (apologize and explain the reason behind your intrusion, tell her where it is VS refuse to tell her where it is) but I’m thinking it might come off more as (try to appease her by telling her where it is, therefore making everything John said before about ‘sacrifice’ and his desires seem insincere to her, VS stay true to John’s sentiment of protecting Arthur by refusing to tell her where it is, even if it is pointless - precisely bc it’s pointless, it’s true to his heart). Honestly if I could know for sure choosing to tell her where the talisman is would end up with 1) John apologizing 2) avoiding any further distrust 3) keep the glass of Leng in the room with John while she goes looking for the talisman, which might allow him an avenue to escape with their full inventory - then I’d choose it. But there’s a chance that it’ll end up with the Hag taking this sacrifice from John for granted, and considering it false and only to appease her. She might even consider it a symbolic yield from him in their verbal spar this chapter. That’d be a disservice to John, and a slap in the face after his vulnerability this chapter. For that alone I think I’ll choose not to tell her where it is. It’s pointless and it’s vaguely risky, but it stays true to the sentiment John has shown. It might inspire anger from the Queen in the moment, but the senselessness of it would make it the greatest testament to his argument - that there is something in humanity worth sacrifice, worthy of protection. Some arguments can’t be made with words. And if nothing else, then again, we stay true to John, and honor his actions. He went after the talisman to protect Arthur, and told the truth to protect him, and would refuse to tell her where he hid it to protect his friend just a little longer. Honestly it would break my heart for John to just be…humbled or silenced right now by the hag. John hasn’t lived a meaningless life without his own character before this chapters choice. He makes his argument already: the impact he allowed the nurse to have on him, the sacrifice he made for Arthur…and other things he doesn’t bring up: the deal he made with Cain, the fact he came back to Arthur, the regard he shows for Faroe, the reverence he has for poems, the heartbreak and disapproval he shows Arthur in Bedrock, but the decision to stand by him regardless, the purpose he feels at being Arthur’s anchor for that one moment, the fear he felt at being indistinguishable to Noel from the KiY, that drives him to so insistently remind Arthur not to tell Noel who he really is, his reassurance to Arthur that killing Larson in part 40 wasn’t worth dying, even though he knew he had a deal to uphold. All of this has already been carving out John’s character - it’s just that he hasn’t had a moment to reflect on all this and decide if this says something, what it says, and if he wants to follow this statement he’s making to its conclusion. So I think rather than trying to change John right now, it’s best to stand by him and have him stand true to the sentiment he’s shown so far. Arthur has had his moments where the chips are down, and where there was nothing more he could do, and any further resistance was futile - and those where the moments where his identity/values could crystallize and present itself. When anything you do has no material purpose, no impact on the way things will go away, by virtue of this fact alone, these actions or words become the greatest indicator of what you embody. So I guess this is John’s moment to do that, to affirm his actions so far - which I really think he has the right to. He has nothing to be truly sorry for (only the way he was forced to go about it), so I don’t want to make him apologize. I’d only be sorry to lose the glass of Leng, but I’m just as excited to see how the Hag will interact with it. If the choice was to lie again, I wouldn’t take it so as to, like you said, not sow further distrust. But the choice is to refuse to engage the Hag, to help her in her goals, and I think there’s a meaning to that the Hag might be able to acknowledge, even if not appreciate. Maybe the best case scenario will happen, and this will register for the Hag as a sacrifice, and she’ll have to reconsider Arthur as something that could inspire sacrifice in someone. Sorry, I rambled there. All this is to say I’m still acting on my first comment: our choice now will probably build up to something. But I’ve thought it over and I feel like telling the Hag what she wants to know isn’t going to necessarily deliver the message we want it to, or make her show John’s past or future choices any more regard. Therefore, I would rather make the choice that affirms John’s words this chapter the most.

Layali

Tl;dr: ‘giving in’ might sow more ‘distrust’. From the Queen in John’s words, from the listeners in John, from John to John :p. Again, if the choice was to lie about where the item is, then I’m 100% agreed with your words - pointless to lie, and would sow further distrust, and shape John’s character in an unflattering way. I’m still 100% agreed with your words, but I think making the 2nd choice would fit our argument better.

Layali

Even the way this episode goes…who are you? I’m the king in yellow and this is my flesh vessel that’s off limits. Okay, fine, I’m the king in yellow and this is a flesh prison but I need it…okay, I care about it…I do care about it! Here’s proof! ‘Tells us a bunch key highlight moments that had an impact on him, or that he had a big hand in’. That’s John’s answer to ‘who are you’. So it’s not that he’s lost, it’s just that he’s taking the first step on a looong, scary road, and it’s disorienting so he feels lost. But he’s not! So I refuse to have him made doubtful of how far he’s come, and the journey he’s taken. I can’t have him disheartened, brow beaten and subdued at such an important big boy first step! He’s finally realizing how far he’s come!! And the miles more he has to go! :p It really feels like this chapter is John replying to himself from the very first chapter of this season. Like a reassurance. He really isn’t as lost as he feels he is.

Or it shows her the wall it's hidden in. Cue "damn, why do all the walls in my lair look the same." (joke courtesy of the Invictus server)

melissa hohman

If we don’t tell her yorric surely will to curry favor I think. Better to just tell her. But what about the brooch??? That must have some significance here

I love that John is getting therapy, good for him
