I DON’T THINK I’LL BE ABLE TO CHANGE MANY PEOPLE’S MINDS BUT I HAVE TO TRY. This is a book code, it’s from the King in Yellow collection of stories. Both options are “sleep.” However, they are pointing to two different instances of the word sleep being used. The first option’s sentence: “But as she moved away I recollected that unless I wanted to sleep on a windy moor that night I had best recover my speech without delay.” The second option’s sentence: “It was the signal for breaking up, and everybody came and shook hands with Trent, saying they hoped Sylvia would sleep it off and that it would be nothing.” The first option is someone realizing they might have to sleep outside unless they gather their wits. The second option is people hoping that a woman would sleep some sort of ailment off and that it would be nothing - basically, just resigning to hope it’ll all work out, with the character in question remaining asleep. Because of this, I am voting for the first option.

THE SECOND ONE IS A QUOTE ABOUT SOMEONE REMAINING ASLEEP. it is about someone remaining asleep and everybody else just hoping that she’ll “sleep off” an episode she’s just had, which she ends up NOT doing once she awakes and is just as worse off as before!
