Take the mask off, let John see!

Nicky

Frederick was already infected when he gave them the mask off his face There are no longer visible signs of blight Harlan prefers wide FOV / despises limited FOV

I think letting John see is our best bet here. If Arthur starts to react poorly to the blight they can put the mask back on-but if they keep is on and are attacked due to tunnel vision-it'll be too late.

I have a few reasons why we should take it off: 1: John says he doesn’t see evidence of the blight (which we assume is the black webbing and the spooky thick air from before). We have been trusting John so far so why stop now 2: if the blight is so easy to catch, we are already infected. Fredrick had it on him when we were wrestling him. We were full nude so definitely had contact. That and Fredrick isn’t confident the mask will do anything so we could be infected already. 3: people keep saying that we have been doing fine with limited vision but you can tell John is worried. Being in a close space with limited vision will give us no time to see potential threats (and to either hide or defend). 4: We’ve seen previously that anytime John’s sight is limited, he gets scared and frustrated. In a place where negative emotions are heightened, we will have to use the lighter to abate them and, unfortunately, the lighter is a big old beacon for everything to find us

Well…we have to take off the mask at some point. But what does everyone else want that to look like? A proactive choice or a reactive one? - Proactive logic: we remove the mask ourselves once it seems safe based on environmental cues OR reward > risk. - Reactive logic: waiting for a plot event, character, or danger, to force the mask off - or to clearly tell us we’re safe now. Here’s my argument for people who want to be more proactive: If we wait for a ‘safer’ time, what would that even look like? The only markers we’ve used so far to identify blighted areas, are now absent. That doesn’t mean the blight is gone now, but does mean this area is virtually indistinguishable from whatever future areas we encounter that we’d call ‘safe’. If we wait to remove that mask later, we’ll be relying on the same ‘absence of evidence’ we’re seeing now, to call that area ‘safe’. So there’s no factual basis to say a future moment would be safer than this one. For people who lean more reactive: whatever we might encounter in these tight quarters with low visibility might just force the mask off. Either a fight, a fall, a cracked lens, blood on the glass…if we’re waiting for a narrative clue, we might be getting an outright narrative smackdown next chapter. Might be better to avoid that? We haven’t fought so far with the mask on, it’ll probably be a huge hindrance. We’ll need to compensate for its restrictions (some we’ll only find out when we fight in it for the first time!) while also having THREE goals: 1. survive the fight 2. keep the mask on + unbroken + unstained 3. hopefully kill the assailant OR hide from them (but with restricted vision, we don’t know how well hidden we are). If it were me in Arthur and John’s place I would be too scared to take off the mask for a while longer until I got used to the idea of taking it off, and until I had time to FEEL safe - even if it turns out false. But because I’m not in their place, and I can make my decisions with more distance and based purely on my reasoning, I’ll vote take off the mask. The only thing that would make a future area more obviously ‘safe’ to take the mask off is if they had banners saying ‘SAFE ZONE HERE - NO MASKS NECESSARY! 100% BLIGHT FREE!’ Which would go back to being suspicious lol. Or if some dark world Malam appeared and went ‘yeah trust me take off the mask now, I promise you won’t die’.

If we’re planning to take off the mask at some point, then why not now? If we wait for a ‘safer’ time, what would that even look like? The markers we’ve used to identify blighted areas is now gone. That doesn’t prove that the blight is gone now, but does mean this area looks the same as any future area we’d call ‘safe’ - basically, this is as ‘safe’ as it will look. If we ARE planning to take off the mask, then if not now when? In the middle of a fight, when the lens are splattered with blood or cracked and we can’t see?

Sarafu

I'm going to guess that Harlan is going to fuck us either way.

0rthor

I vote keep it on with all the war parallels in the chapter it's worth reminding mustard gas isn't visable which seems to be a small parallel to the blight

Nicky

The Dark World is full of lots of different areas. We aren’t in the war zone any more

keyraven

Even if they get attacked, they have a better change of fighting it off if they have face protection, and protection against gas/disease/the blight. What is more peripheral vision going to grant them? A few extra moments of warning? But the mask will grant ARMOR.

Kass

fredrick didn’t even know if the mask would help against the blight. that is all
