Harlan here, creator of Malevolent

There was some upset with my comment yesterday in the POLL about teaching lessons and the tone of the Booth Entity in Chapter 135 and I want to address that.

First off, this show has always had meta tones and yes, punishment is one of them. This is the nature of the show and it’s been forgotten because, well, you’ve just had it very easy as of late. The heart of the show has ALWAYS been this way, look back to Chapter 18 when the entity punished you for pulling the trigger without checking the gun if you’ve forgotten.

This is the show. It isn’t personal, it isn’t an attack on you, it isn’t always going to work out the way you want.

Why?

Because the nature of Lovecraftian Horror is about these themes. It’s the point. Trying your best, and failing. Going to far and losing sight of where you’re heading. Obfuscated truth and the horror that comes from diving too deeply. It is about unexpected turns and evil forces that wish to do you harm. Overwhelming Malevolent entities that you have no chance against.

This is the show.

Please don’t take the prodding personally, these votes don’t have a right or wrong answer. Sometimes every choice will result in a bad outcome, just as is the nature of Lovecraftian Horror.

For those out there that punish you; remind them that it is a show and that you are the protagonist and sometimes the protagonist is not given a good or bad choice, just choices.

And the punishing voice? Well, get used to it. Cause you’re playing someone’s game and it’s not mine. If this we’re easy anyone could do it, persevere, be smart, pray, hope, do whatever you can and finally - accept that the game may be rigged sometimes.

EDIT: Cause I know some people don't like making waves but feel they have valid concerns feel free to ask questions at the following link

Harlan I honestly love the tone so much, and the way you tease and "punish" us with your writing and characters is 1000% part of the fun! Interacting with a creator and a narrative like this is such a special thing, and I hope you keep your passion and love for making it YOUR way. I made this analogy yesterday in a DM with a friend, but this is your train and we're along for the ride. We might help decide what's being served that night in the dining car, but YOU'RE the one driving the train! Keep up the incredible work!

The fact that sometimes there just isn't a "right" choice is a big part of what made me listen and sign up here as soon as I'd caught up. The polls are deliciously terrifying. I love this aspect of Malevolent and I will enjoy every moment of this twisted and crazy ride, no matter the outcome. I hope this keeps being fun for you, and I look forward to every little bit of it. Thank you for communicating so openly with us, and most importantly for sharing what you create with us. Getting to interact with you along the road is an amazing part of this as well, and I appreciate it very much. Take care!

I, for one, absolutely love the fact that the game is so rigged and unpredictable. That's what makes the show fun! That's what makes the POLL fun! If everything had a correct and obvious answer every time, that's the only thing that would ever be picked. Things would grow so boring so quickly! How is John supposed to take over more body parts if we never split the vote again?! How would we continue to piss off Kayne?! All of you, be honest; doesn't like, 80% of BJ's charm come from the constant mockery? Do you REALLY want everything to always go according to plan? Because the fact that this train starts multitrack drifting at the drop of a hat IS EXACTLY WHY I GOT ON. I think it's good for people to remember that, at the end of the day, this is an especially advanced/lovingly made tabletop campaign. It's literally a game. We're meant to have fun here! We're supposed to be tricked and surprised! It isn't meant to be that serious! I, for one, am having a blast once I put all the discourse aside. Is this a Dark World run? Do we see Kayne again? Will John cut the deal? Will Arthur get "Yellow'd"? Does the KIY come back now? Will Arthur ever get to friggin' bathe properly?! I have absolutely NO IDEA, about ANY of it, and that's AWESOME. I'm ride or die for this show, and I eagerly await the next roast, Harlan. You're good at them!

That fact that enough people got upset for you to make this post shows listeners are invested. Just want to let you know that while I may have felt the 'attack' and 'punishment' of intro-John, I didn't feel it as a personal attack from you, Harlan. Would say a majority (if not all) of us trusts that you make the decisions in spirit of the story and style it's meant to have. I also don't see you as the type to abandon the show either, unfinished. At least not without explanation. Keep doing what you do. I absolutely love what you create (and always amazed at how fast these episodes can come out). My only hope is that you also enjoy making Malevolent (as much as we love listening to it) and doesn't become a bitter chore. Please take care!!

If anyone is getting their knickers in a twist over the poll then they need to give their heads a wobble. *edit* actually managed to listen to the episode and I can see why everyone is getting all upset. 🤣 This is your train..we're just on it for the ride. We can try to choose where it stops but it may just sail on past the station anyway 😅 Ps. Keep doing what you're doing, Harlan. It's perfect. You are extremely talented and I feel so lucky to be part of it in any way with the polls. 💜

It was brutal in the most delicious way possible. Most people who play rpgs and the like get that sometimes you make decisions that seem right in the moment but are short-sighted. But, dealing with the consequences of those choices is what makes a compelling story!! I’m feeling the angst but excited to see what comes next.

I've said it several places, but I'm here for whatever roller coaster you have for us and whatever flavor of ice cream you throw. Please keep doing you and keep doing your show as you have been, I don't want to miss out the fun of part of the reason I'm here for. Keep going on Harlan!

I will keep sending all my love to this project, to invictus all and to booth john for being so mean♡. Send my love to this genre and this dinamic, bc we are not owners of the story, we are collective passengers. There is something that we all need to get clearer: being a patron is not being a boss or owner or holder of stocks, that is such a consumist/market-driven way of thinking about creative processes. We are here to support independent art. The perks like voting (fun and interesting and meta as they are) are not the reason why I'm here, I'm here bc what little I got left at the end of the month I rather have it for projects like this than monopolic media structures. We are patrons bc we want autonomy for the creators to create what they want. For spoon-fed tales that shake no one I would put my humble money (pesos argentinos, imagine that) on mainstream media. The key is creative liberty of the author. We are not owners. We are supporters.

What part of "horror fiction" is unclear? I *loved* the intro to this episode, it was brutal and delicious. That laugh is just one of my favorite things. You don't owe anyone an explanation. I hope that you keep working on this for as long as it brings you joy. It is a delight to be along for the ride. Keep making amazing things, Harlan.

Horror is my favorite genre, and it's a precious thing when I find a horror story with characters I truly care about. The stakes are so much higher this way! Thank you once again for the amazing podcast.

I cannot wait to increase my pledge to become one of the Voices. I love this podcast- I was convinced I struck gold when I found it & wouldn't change a thing! Lovecraftian horror is my jam & no one does it better then Harlan. I hope this show goes on for a long time! I have enjoyed finding Harlan in many of the other podcasts I listen to. Super excited for 9IIM2 tonight!

Imagine being mad because the disembodied voice of an Eldritch god told you you dun fukt up.

I just want to say that I love the fact that we get a say in the story and that there are actual consequences for our choices. I like that I don't know what's going to happen. This is the first podcast that I've listened to that has given me that. Thank you and I hope that you've had as much fun creating this as I have had listening to it.

I personally don’t think you ever need to justify creative decisions, especially when it comes to your own project. It says a lot about your character that you not only took the time to reply; you addressed the “issue” in such a thoughtful manner. I’m a proud patreon 🖤👏
