Hello you lovely deviants,I know, I know - "Are we talking about the Merchant again?" we are, and it probably most be the last time either haha.I did a post previously about aspects of games that can feel redundant over time, one thing that was mentioned a few times was the Merchants use beyond just selling stuff as you progress. At the start of a game the items being sold seem really viable, but as you progress further and further they end up mainly becoming a means to sell items to.So I would love your feedback and thoughts either in the form attached or in the comments below on what the merchant could offer, how you interact with the merchant, or maybe mechanics that could help with making the merchant or shop feel like a consistently useful place throughout the game.I look forward to hearing from you :)

I wanted to get your thoughts on considerations that would make the Merchant still feel useful throughout the game beyond just selling items as

My thoughts are that items the merchant sells would depend on how important you want the merchant to be. For example, when players come across the merchant would you want their reaction to be "oh thank God it's the merchant..." Or "oh sweet, it's the merchant" etc. I'm not sure what ideas have already been proposed aside from the obvious equipment and weapons, but maybe also include healing potions (limit purchase) or other ways to buff or cure yourself. Maybe even some kind of trading system for same rarity items rather than just selling and repurchasing (ex. Trade an uncommon for another uncommon). Perhaps make the items for sale random or rotating to make it exciting for the player, maybe include a small chance to get high rarity items in the shop.

Crafting materials if there will be crafting. And you can never go wrong with just like healing potions and just items you use mid combat

Thats a great idea, thank you Lukas!

I really appreciate this thorough response Mr Battery, thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and suggestions. All wonderful ideas, and apologies for my vagueness - I do have some ideas but didnt want to sway any opinions or discourage any ideas :)

nsfwpixels

Thank you so much, there will definitely be crafting :)

She could be like a brothel?

Thank you so much for the suggestion :)

Perhaps a randomized roll for a random piece of gear? Depending on level or progress but im not sure what your view on gacha mechanics are.

nsfwpixels

Thats a really interesting idea, thank you so much, so this game will have some gacha aspects (no micro transactions to be clear haha) so I appreciate this suggestion!

They could sell random or rotating rare materials for crafting and upgrading for some higher prices that also keep currency relevant as well. Money can also be invested into the merchant to update/upgrade their inventory.

Thank you so much for these suggestions Tommy, you never miss!

Maybe gallery unlocks? Either unique scenarios, or after X scene has been triggered, you're then able to purchase the scene for future use in a gallery instead of having to constantly trigger the scene (or 1 off scenes that can't be retriggered). You can even throw in alternative costumes, hair colors/styles, can go wild with it.

I always really appreciate your feedback and suggestions Leon, thank you! :)
