Hello All!

Introducing Firefly to the roster! Only one ep into this show but really feel like it's a great fit! So many familiar faces in just one episode and the characters are so layered and interesting, I just wanna know more already! I think there's a lot to learn about this world and i'm excited to find out more!

I will aim to watch two episodes a week and then I will start some pilots and hope to continue one as a regular reaction series. It appears that Fringe is a popular pick so I will start there I think.

I have never watched this show but Buffy is my favorite show of all time and I love Angel too. I might just do a first watch through of this show right along with you. Dakara I have watched enough of your reactions to get a decent sense for what makes a show good for you. “Fringe” is top tier tv. You will LOVE it. And I cannot wait to see/hear what you think of it when you get there. Seriously… Great stuff. 😊

One thing I want to say, especially since if you haven’t actually watched the next one yet behind the scenes, is I have a rewatch recommend for you. You were talking about your struggles with Mal as a character, and I wanted to recommend that now that you’ve seen the whole pilot you go back and just rewatch the intro scene of the battle in the war. Mal is so different in this scene, and I think it says a lot about the character.

Obligatory "shiny!" comment lol this show is such a cult classic now, but then it was completely massacred by the network airing it out of order. And you recognise a lot of familiar faces - it used to be a badge of honour to be on every Whedon's show. Only a very selected few were part of that club. I gotta say Firefly was always an anomaly for me personally. I used to hate westerns and sci-fi (still cannot stand westerns) so when this first aired I was reluctant but it surprised me in the best way. I'm a huge sci-fi fan now, tho I thank Farscape for changing my mind on that genre.

No interest in fringe at all so will enjoy this show while I can then go back to watching nothing until cobra Kai which is fine because I support you and the channel regardless if I watch any content or not 👍 the characters are wonderful in this show I'm not surprised you are invested already dak 🙂

I hadn't seen this show in a good long while, but earlier this year I treated myself to the Firefly and Serenity blurays for a quick reminder. I think you spotted most of the Buffyverse actors. Summer Glau (River) played the ballerina in Angel 3x13, her first acting role. Andy Umberger was the Alliance captain near the start of the episode, he played D'Hoffryn in Buffy and also the bad guy in Angel 1x04. I'm sure there will be a few more as the series goes on. Never seen Fringe and don't know much about it, but it does seem to be a popular suggestion so we'll see!

I also hope Dak will give Farscape a go sometime (assuming she hasn't seen it before). If you can think of a suitable bribe then I'll chip in!

Just to add, you did catch that Carlos Jacott as the Fed agent was also in Angel 1x7 "The Bachelor Party", but he was also in Buffy 3x1 "Anne" as Ken the cult/demon leader of the hell dimension.

I gave up on people ever reacting to Farscape :( It's such an incredible piece of television with one of the best female characters ever created but I think the minor puppet aspect is what turns people off. The same way I'm giving up on people watching Dark because it's in German.

Really excited for you to undertake this journey! I am going to be honest. My first time watching this first episode it didn't ring with me right away. It wasn't until my friends convinced me to give it another try that I went back to the first episode and then carried on the rest. In all honesty I now don't recall why I didn't like the show at first. But after the rewatch of episode one and continuing with the series it quickly became my absolute favorite! I really grew to just love these characters and the ship. Now I have lost count how many times I've rewatched the series and the movie. This show and it's characters is one of the few things I really cherish. I don't want to say much more than that for now, but I do want to ask: Did you recognize the actress portraying Kaylee? Jewel State. You've seen her before in Supernatural. I was really happy to see your look when you saw Mark Sheppard in the opening credits. I love Mark Sheppard so much. He was brilliant in Supernatural and is just brilliant in this as well. Badger is such a fun character. Really looking forward to your reactions to the rest of the series. The first time I saw Mark Sheppard in anything was an episode of Burn Notice. Great show if you never seen it. A bit longer with 7 seasons but a real good one. Anyway great reaction, excited or the next episode!

i forgot how slow the first episode was lol. the standout moment for me has always been the "kaylee's dead" gag, it makes me laugh every time just some cute context because the show literally never translates it's sporadic chinese: mei mei means little sister. i believe we heard mal call kaylee that early on in the episode

First off, I want to thank you for starting the (albeit short) Firefly journey. Whedon originally planned for it to be a 7 season series, but the network cancelled it after, I think, eleven episodes, leaving three unaired. They also aired them in the wrong order which didn't help matters, and I'm so glad you were given the correct order in which to watch them. This is very nostalgic for me as the cast are actors and actresses that have been part of my life for a very long time. I grew up watching Ron Glass (Shepherd Book) on Barney Miller (1975-1982) and guest appearances on many other series' over the years. Then of course you have Nathan Fillion who I've enjoyed since the Buffy/Firefly era to The Rookie (2018-2024), and many others, particularly Castle (2009-2016). How crazy is it that you had Nathan Fillion, part of the final season of Buffy, and Adam Baldwin, part of the final season of Angel, in the very next series you start? Actually, if you look at all the main characters on IMDb, you'll find that a good many of them have worked together on the same shows and movies over the years. Oh, the actor that you recognized at the beginning is Alan Tudyk (Wash). I know him mainly for Firefly, Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010), and Deadpool 2 (2018), but he's been in many things and has done quite a bit of voicework. Yeah, Crowley looked so much younger, even though it was only 7 years earlier. Also, I forgot that Morena Baccarin (Inara) was in the series as I haven't rewatched it for almost a decade. She was also in Deadpool 2 and I loved her in Gotham (2015-2019). I was surprised to learn that she was the voice of Gideon on The Flash (2014-2023), probably because she was uncredited, which I find rather insulting. The actress that played Patience was born in 1929 and was in her 70s when this was filmed; she's still alive, God bless her. Personally, I really like the opening theme "The Ballad of Serenity". This is the best space western that I've ever watched and it really gives off that vibe. When I first watched the show when it aired, I thought the ship was called Firefly, but Firefly is a type of ship and Serenity is the name of this particular Firefly. Every time I rewatch, I'm reminded of that because I keep reverting to that thinking, which annoys me. As you get older, memory fades bit by bit. One last comment regarding the length of the episode. I believe it was in your Angel series finale outro that you talked about reacting to Firefly but were iffy about reacting to the movie Serenity because you had never reacted to movies on the channel. Seeing as this episode was the length of the movie I would just look at Serenity as a long episode. Plus it would complete your Firefly journey. Thank you Dak, I really enjoyed this one (when do I not?) and can't wait for the next episode. Bye for now!

That was just the physical prop of the controls not being present though, not a missing CGI element. Alan told a story on it, for some reason the controls had been torn down (I remember none of the details on why) so he just mimed it in the pickup shot that they did.
