Hello All!

Did I just see a teleportation device?! That could open up a whole new world of story opportunities! Very exciting. I felt for Walter yet again in this one, going to the place that he'd been trapped in for so many years, talking to his friend that was struggling, looking out for Olivia and Peter looking out for his Dad! It was a fab episode, yet to watch a bad one.

Truly hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a fab week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Hi Dakara! New subscriber here! Came for Fringe, stayed for your insight and empathy towards characters at the end of the episodes <3 With Fringe there's quite a few standalones, at least in the first seasons, but the story is always there, just given to you in breadcrumbs. Obviously you'd get more of the hints and the foreshadowing with a rewatch, but the lovely characters, the amazing performances, and the x-files type of vibes just draw you in everytime so I'm just glad you're appreciating this stellar show

now may be a good time to tell you if you don't already know that those little cards with the glyphs actually spell out a word central to the theme of the episode. each image corresponds to a letter, getting 26 when you take orientation and light position; i think the apple has 4 different iterations just because of which corner the light is in, the hand has 6! lol

genuinely, don't worry about not talking a lot during these reactions; like you said, there's a lot going on and there's a good chance you'd miss either vital information or a fun character beat if you were giving full blown thoughts and impressions in the middle of the episodes. you're still reacting with your laughs and tearing up and comments about peter being oh so cute, you're just waiting until the end to give your more complex thoughts lol

When this episode first aired in 2008, hypnosis was still considered "fringe" science. However, in the relatively short time since then, that perception has changed significantly, largely due to advances in brain imaging technologies like MRI and fMRI. For example, research from Stanford in 2016 has documented and clarified what the brain is actually doing during hypnosis. Back in 2008, we weren't even sure if the brain was in a different state, leading some to believe that hypnosis might just be a case of someone "pretending" or "playing along" rather than a genuine physiological phenomenon. What’s particularly fascinating is that brain scans now show that during hypnosis, the brain's default mode network (DMN) decreases in activity, making us feel dreamy or sleepy. At the same time, activity in the executive control network (ECN) and salience network (SN) increases, causing us to become hyper-focused and fixated on specific thoughts. These networks were previously seen as operating in opposition to each other, which makes hypnosis all the more intriguing. Under hypnosis, the brain seems to be moving in two different directions at once: sleepy yet focused, making us more suggestible—an ideal state for planting ideas or responses. Interestingly, this state is also true when we daydream; in essence, we are practicing a form of self-hypnosis. If we become aware that we’re daydreaming, we can use that moment before we "snap out of it" to give ourselves suggestions—potentially helping to modify our behavior or integrate new ways of thinking. So, in 2008, hypnosis was often dismissed as "fringe" science. With scientific advancement and research, it’s now recognized as a legitimate area of science and study. Importantly, this is the essence of science: the process and concept of evolving our understanding as new data comes to light and then knowing better how to use it. Regarding Walter: The actor, John Noble, is simply amazing. I almost confused his name with 'John Bishop'—an understandable mistake, as the line between actor and character in this show feels blurred. When we watch these characters, we're able to "read" them beyond just their dialogue; we pick up on their intentions, knowledge, and even what they're thinking. We are noticing and cleverly picking up on tiny things, and these are only real to the character. The actors add so many layers and levels and intellectualization of the characters. This isn’t shared headspace LOL -As I typed the last paragraph, you are now at the end of the episode saying this about the acting, referencing Joshua Jackson. I guess it is not something to share, but something that has become obvious. An in a way obvious because it isn't typical.

Random but I've rewatched Roswell during the pandemic and sadly, I don't think it aged well. I thought it went downhill when they started the galactic war crap instead of focusing on more character driven plotlines but this time I couldn't even get through some episodes. Can't even blame the replacement music, like I did with Dawson's Creek, cause I have the original airings... Anyway, it is indeed sheriff Valenti in this episode :D

The Mindful Witch

Great reaction! A couple things. Firstly, I am so glad that you are only on episode 8 and you can already tell that this will be up there with some of your favorite shows. I definitely felt that would be the case when you started just based on your love of strong and well written characters and being that this show is just so damn good. As for you not talking too much during the show it totally makes sense. Not only do you have to try to figure out what the hell they are talking about with the science aspects but the character moments are so well done it is easy to get pulled in to the moment. Your reactions have been absolutely fine for this show in my opinion. No complaints here. I'm so glad you are enjoying it and I am looking forward to watching along as more crazy stories unfold. Take care.

John Noble acting praise is a given I think lol Josh Jackson needed some love too. I think he's better than people were giving him credit back then. Tho there was a lot of criticism for Anna's acting so clearly some viewers were insane :P BTW love your entire comment!

Neumann

dude i didn't know any of that about hypnosis! see, this is why i get annoyed when people conflate fringe science with pseudo science; fringe science at least has a scientific basis, it TRIES to respect the scientific method with limited information, we just haven't found a way to prove it yet. and tbf, some things DO get disproven the more we learn about things, but that's the other key difference: it may take a while, but fringe sciences DO have ways to prove or disprove them lol

I was really into this show. It had a touch of the magic the X-Files had for me, so that helps. I tend to get into the story being told in the episodes. I do also really like good characters, though. But if they don't do a good job in the stuff surrounding the character elements. I really don't like it when they just focus mostly on the character stuff and the rest of it is half-assed. Some shows do that. But this show doesn't, and I like that. They put in a good effort into making the surrounding elements worth watching too. Another thing I love is when a show gives the viewer insider information that the characters aren't given. I get so impatient and want to know what's going on. Like when we found out about Sam drinking demon blood before Dean did, so we knew what was going on with him. That's what I wanted with this show, but they were just giving us bits and pieces. A good kind of frustration, though. Regarding your concern about not talking much - I think you're right in needing to pay attention. It would be so easy to miss something. The only option would be to pause the episode while you give your thoughts. Or, turn on captions. That could help so you don't have to worry about hearing what is being said while you're talking.

I came across a review of Fringe where the author said something to the effect that if any show deserved the title of spiritual successor to The X-Files, it would be this one. As an X-Files fan I agree. It's not a direct comparison, but something about this show just hits the right spots in a way that makes it feel special.

No way, this is such a shame. I was into roswell massively back in the day. Crushing on Max and wishing I was friends with Izzy and Maria.

DB

It's so cringe but i don't think that's surprising to anyone. tbf even back in the day I mostly watched it for Liz, Maria and Alex interactions and Michael/Maria (I have such a type when it comes to ships it's not even funny... I fully blame obsessively reading Anne of Green Gables as a kid for getting into "enemies to lovers" lol).
