The Expanse, also known as The Cliffhanger :)

Shanwyn Nightfox

I love your reaction. Especially when they add details like the tears not falling from the eyes in zero G. Compliments for noticing, I only caught that at the second time I watched it. Lots of the technical details they add are actually simple physics which we learned in school, but because it is all around us in every day life, we do not notice. The spinning of the drum is a great example. the drum is the huge portion of the ship shaped like a cylinder. It is build around a stable axis and spins around it. By spinning around it creates artificial gravity (technically its a centrifuge). Imagine a children's toy, a ball attached to a string. then you swing the ball in a circle above you. The ball spins around in the air above you and doesn't fall down as log as you spin it on the string. That's because the force of the spin is greater than gravity. Technically if you were inside that ball, you wold stand with your feet against the inner wall that would face outward of the spin. So you would stand horizontal. Again, very simple basically, but we never think of it because we are so used to our surroundings. But it would be very important in space. The little details, like small wounds become lethal without gravity, are such an important part of the story. It didn't add really to the story, but it makes it more realistic and adds to the mood. Something other Sci Fi shows don't often adress

Isak Haugerud

This episode had so many cool scenes to do with gravity, or rather lack thereof. From the weird but fairly accurate spherical zero-g fire in Naomi's skiff, to the tears pooling up in Tilli's eyes. How internal wounds are so much worse without gravity. And then the epic "spin the drum" scene near the end. Gravity almost felt like a character of its own in this episode! You asked to have us explain the "drum spinning", but I think you understood right after when Ashford said "spin-gravity". If not (or to make it more clear), you can think of it like the UFO/Gravitron ride at some amusement parks. Where it spins so fast that the riders get stuck to the wall inside it due to the centrifugal force. Another example could be spinning a bucket of water around yourself fast enough that all the water stays inside, even though the bucket is upside down half the time. In The Expanse we've seen this principle being used in several places. Tycho Station has artifical gravity because it spins, and it's been mentioned that the Tycho corporation's main business is "spinning up" asteroids. Ceres and Eros are examples of asteroids which have been spun up to make artifical gravity. The people on Ceres and Tycho live on the inside, like the water inside the spinning bucket, feet towards space and their heads towards the centre. Usually, ships in The Expanse don't create artificial gravity this way. Instead they are laid out more like skyscrapers, with the engine at the bottom. Their engines/reactors (Epstein drives) are so ridiculously efficient that they can just keep a constant acceleration/deceleration from departure to destination. This pushes the ship towards the people and objects inside, which would feel indistinguishable from real gravity. Now The Behemoth (fka. The Nauvoo) is different. It was designed to travel to another star, 12 light years away. This would take about 100 years, and even the Epstein drive isn't efficient enough to stay lit for more than a fraction of the way there. So in order to have artificial gravity on this journey, and thus avoid the negative effects of long term zero-g on the colonists bodies, it was designed to be able to create spin gravity. That's why it's pretty much just a giant cylinder. The cylinder (or drum) spins fast enough that the people inside are stuck to the walls.

You beat me to it by 3 minutes, and posted while I was still writing 😂 Very well explained!

Shanwyn Nightfox

I just noticed yours. You did a better job explaining though. In my defense, it's been over 20 years since my physic lessons. But somehow watching that show the memories came back. It all is really basic, but as I mentioned, we kinda forget and do not notice since, well, we have gravity all the time around us. Doesn't help that english isn't my first language either hehe

Shawn Anomaly

Will the show slow down...oh you know The Expanse knows no such mercy. Things are only going to ramp up further as we step towards the finale! As usual you think you've seen some bonkers stuff BUT The Expanse still has more in store for you that you're not ready for whatsoever! No way you can guess where things are heading! 3x13 can't come soon enough; I can't wait to see the look on your face as you go through that episode!

Ian

One crazy episode people literally floating unconscious everywhere that's bananas . Only good melba is a peach Melba glad Anna came in clutch 🙌 . Yes yes yes dak drummer better be ok or I'm coming to get you and we storm the writers offices and trust me they don't want that 😀 . Once again the visuals are just beautiful, frightening but so cool . Where the frig is chrisjen we havnt seen her for ages 🤷 . This was another edge of your seat , try to breath , tense AF episode but another belter 🔥 cheers dak awesome outro as always

Robert

Zero G's will play havoc on your body. That's why astronauts try to engage in some form of exercise to maintain bone density. Think of the Fred Haise character from "Apollo 13". The primary reason his tooth infection got so bad, is it couldn't drain normally. A simple cut could be fatal in space.

PongPong31

Dak you said X, Y and Zee. Justice for Zed! "I can't help but like him". This is what The Expanse does to us all. With the spectacular magnitude of the actual plot, how they manage to keep writing such compelling, enigmatic, characters, is truly a miraculous achievement. From Ashford and Melba this season, to Champa the champ and Manneo the belter slingshot racer, who've immortalised themselves in the show's lore after just single appearances. Incredible. Keep going bosmang! Loved it.

AC10

NO FKIN WAY!!!! Nooo I didn't miss that... O_o Imma check

AC10

#173 times saying.... She still don't get what's coming... It just keeps... Idk... Expanding?? I guess that word will do for now.

AC10

I can't help but think that a simple, small widdle vacuum device attached to the wound would drain it similar enough to gravity.... But I'm no doctor. So maybe I'm missing something obvious.

AC10

The example I'm used to is a bucket of water.... Hold a bucket with water one handed by your side.... The water stays in the bottom of the bucket. Now keep your arm straight and spin the bucket around in a big circle up to the sky and down to the ground... The water stays in the bottom of the bucket even completely upside down.

AC10

Isn't it incredible how a tv show can be Mind Blowingly INCREDIBLE!!!! to watch leaving you all but drooling to see what happens next.... While also simultaneously teaching you cool a$$ science sh!/ all along the way!!! Why can't more shows be like this??? Oh yeah... They can be.

AC10

If I'm not mistaken.... The Astros on the ISS lift weights/run on a treadmill with bungee cords making the "weight" for 1+ hours a day... Every day... For 6-9 months. YAY!!!! Said no one ever. 😫 (As soon I I finished typing this I feel like it's 2+ hours a day) (OH GOD IT'S 2.5 HOURS!!!! I looked it up...) O_O

Azraelov

the betrayal! where's the opening scene hum along Dak!? 😭

PongPong31

Haha I was gonna give her the benefit of the doubt and wait for 3x12.

AC10

I tried not to think about it after the fact... I started saying it as kinda a joke... But then she hums it so beautifully. (Makes me wonder if that guitar that used to be in the background was hers...)

AC10

I wonder how many young people watched this show and were inspired to pursue a career in one of the astro sciences.... I wonder...

Etta Eskridge

Many of us kids watching Star Trek back in the day were inspired to go into astrophysics, astronomy etc, my brother among them!

AC10

Hech Yea!!

AC10

I did general mechanical engineering myself... But I kinda regret it... Not really... I LOVE IT. But I'm seriously considering an astro engineering as the second half of my career.

The Martians seemed to be playing/running on both spite and their prejudices. Combine those, on top of Bobbi just getting reinstated, so the squad hasn't built a repour with her yet, they don't fully trust her. But, I find them stupid BECAUSE of those prejudices that they won't let go, even to save their own lives. They're not thinking logically. I don't get the weird suspicion of Anna here. I've never seen a reactor say they thought she was not acting like herself. It makes me think, "What did she seem like before, for you, that you feel she's drastically different?" You can't understand how someone there couldn't be freaked (like the man who killed himself because he was so freaked out) nor someone in awe at this amazing, one-of-a-kind find (Anna)?

Tony Leadholm

Even though the main plot of the series doesn't advance all that much here, and the overall pacing is much, much slower than any other episode in recent memory, THIS is my favorite episode of the latter half of the 3rd season. It tugs at every emotion while we get to witness the fruits of SO MANY relationships that were so brilliantly planted & nurtured over the course of the series. Which makes the scenes with Ashford & Drummer So thoughtful. So heartfelt. So effective. The tiny little interaction with Amos & Naomi was overflowing with meaningful layers of enotion hidden behind minimal dialogue. Just a brilliant, brilliant episode of television.
