Hello All!   

Another pilot and today it's Xena!! Won over by her baby blues and bad-assery! This was a fun watch and you guys know I love the older shows. This one feels a little more theatrical than others I've watched but I'm enjoying the different vibe and I feel the more the show goes on the more they'll find their feet and embrace that aura that they're serving. Happy Christmas, Dak! I'm glad you're starting Xena. I'd wanted to start Hercules when it came out (as movies, 5, I think) but missed 'em, so when this came around as a spin-off, I jumped on the 1st episode. I could tell from it the basics, that she used to be a bad guy, but now she's changing her ways. I loved at the beginning her burying her old stuff symbolizing that part of her is dead. I mean, who doesn't love a redemption arc? I ended up finding her appearances on Hercules quite a while later, so I could see who she used to be. These shows were produced by Sam Raimi, hence the eclectic style. 😁

And there we go! Xena's "hoop" (and you may be the first person to call it that 😁) is called a chakram. (Shock-rum.) Now, most people who watched this show were aware of how genuinely bad (like, seriously evil) Xena was, because they had seen her introduced on Hercules. People have real reasons for hating Xena, and her mother had reasons to have a hard time accepting her. However, I kind of like how bothered you are by Cyrene's (Xena's mom) attitude. Gabrielle is a great character, and I think you will appreciate her friendship with Xena if you continue with this show. It's one of the highlights for many fans. (You did see Renee O'Connor in the opening segment for the Hercules movie, but she wasn't playing Gabrielle.) I don't know how you will structure the vote for new shows, but I hope you consider having Hercules and Xena as a combo, as it's a much richer experience and how they were meant to be watched. (Had to say it.) I hope the holidays are great for you and your family!

I'm glad you already have the sense that Xena and Gabrielle are two sides of the same coin. They are a complementary pair, the dark and the light, day and night. You can't have one without the other. There are some excellent character arcs ahead, but it does take time for the show to gain its footing. This was Gabrielle at her Gabrielliest. She's good at getting herself into trouble, and just as skillfully talking her way out of it. And yes, Lucy's eyes really ARE that blue.

Oh man, I was OBSESSED with this show when I was a kid! It’s so campy and fun. In hindsight, Lucy Lawless may have been my bisexual awakening. I’m now regretting not doing a proper Xena cosplay when I was a strength coach and at my peak fitness 😅💪🏼💕

Yeah, Xena was a warlord before. Seriously bad and the people that hate her have good reason to and she knows it. She's plagued with guilt. The longer the road to redemption, the more interesting the character, for me. People who have done things so bad, they never stop trying to atone for it. Reminds me of a line from the movie "The Shadow," "Do you have any idea what it's like to have done things you can never forgive yourself for?"

The thing I immediately loved about Xena was seeing how much she loves to fight. She always seems like she's having a good time. I guess she's got so much anger that she relishes the opportunity to let it out in a righteous fight.

I remember some people did NOT like Gabrielle, especially in the beginning. I always found her funny and a good contrast to Xena.

No one looks up. Seriously. Think about how often you do. I tend to look down. I've found a good amount of cash that way. Not as much cash up in trees. 😁

You can't really judge Xena's mom too harshly when you don't know what Xena's done in the past. I took the cue from Xena, since she never disagreed with the representation everyone had of her, I figured she did some very bad things before. That kid at the beginning (that she gave bread and cheese to) said she killed his parents. She killed a lot of innocent people before and enjoyed it. Xena fighting Draco and making that deal for the village showed her mother that she really had changed.

To get the full/some backstory of Xena that leads into the pilot you ideally need to watch the Xena episodes of Hercules Season 1. I could tell you which ones but that might be considered spoilers especially if you were to watch both shows. (S1 of Xena and S2 of Hercules were out at the same time if memory servers)

Xena is a complicated hero(Anti-hero?), in that she has red in her ledger and she wants to try to get it out. Gabrielle has the distinction of being her witness, The best way to describe their relationship is to think of Gabrielle as Willow to Xena as Buffy, you'll get the idea.. The "Hoop" thing is called a Chakram, pronounced shock ram, and is similar to the boomerang as a weapon; an actual weapon, amazingly enough. Most were blunt, but some had edges that made them dangerous in combat. The wielder had gloves that where padded allowing them to use it. Love the sweater, and I hope that you have a great holiday. P.S. Almost forgot, but I absolutely LOVE your sound effects!!🤣❤️ I'm going to be smiling for a few days now!

This show is great and I think you'll like it a lot. Get ready for some over the top characters and some cheesy fights. They will also hit you in the feels and funny bone. If you truly want to know about Xena's backstory, there are a few episodes of the Hercules show to watch. Otherwise, I don't want to spoil anything for you as they do steadily give more details about Xena's past as the show goes on.
