Hello All!

I really enjoyed this one & I hope you enjoy watching this reaction! One of my faves so far for sure. Spike seems terrifying to me! There's just no fear in him at all & zero control, he's a wild one that I'll be keeping a close eye on! The relationship between Buffy & her Mum was so strong after a rocky start. The principle had me creasing throughout too, he does comedy really well with his dry delivery of hatred haha.

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

This is my favourite of all the 15 episodes so far. Also, 'Uncle Tom' is a term that was coined by slaves to describe other slaves who collaborated with the slavedrivers. It's based on a slave character from an 1852 novel who had kindness towards his 'owners'. Spike is saying that Angel is betraying his own people by working with humans against vampires.

The title "School Hard" and the structure of that attack at school are a reference to Die Hard (appropriate watch now that we're in December ;)). I love this episode for many, many reasons: Spike and Dru being the biggest one but also because of how layered it is once you scratch the surface. There's a very sexual (albeit disturbing) aspect to most of it from the way Spike and Dru behave with each other to all the innuendos of that final fight with Buffy. There are some very witty papers written on the symbolism of the 3 objects that Xander takes out of Buffy's bag. Or some deep analysis of the parallel of Spike's cut and Buffy's cheek smeared with red paint in the same spot. But mostly I'm just loving finally getting rid of the useless kid and getting vamps with personality and charisma.

So, Spike was supposed to British but actor is actually American. His accent drastically improves as apparently he worked with Anthony Head (Giles) behind the scenes and his accent evolves closer to Anthony’s Heads actual accent.

Joined your Patreon tonight. Watched first and last episode of season 1 and first of season 2, but this episode seems sped up a bit and the audio is pitched a little high. Not sure if this is a PAL transfer for the UK so 24fps sped up to 25fps. I don’t remember this being an issue with the other reactions of yours that I watched. Edit: Went back and checked and only the Pilot episode is the correct speed. Probably a UK thing.

"I cant decide if spikes handsome.." the concensus of many, including me, is yes, absolutely :p and his accent does get more stable. Its a bit of a mix of English dialects in this one. Glad you're enjoying the show!

RavenSteal

Love all the Buffy reactions! Love this one especially. 🥰🥰 I'm still here. 🙋‍♀️🥳

Bart Aansorgh

Love this episode. Spike is a great character, and they should just have had Bad to the bone playing when hje arrived. Drusilla is competely loco, and im here for it. Can't wait for the rest of this season :)

Merkavar

I haven't noticed any speed issue with the episodes. Are you noticing 24 sped to 25 fps? I am not sure how or where Dakara is getting these episodes of Buffy, but wouldnt PAL etc only be an issue if these were original recordings? Assuming these episodes are from say itunes or netflix etc wouldnt they be the same FPS as everyone else being digital versions, not PAL/NTSC versions.

Claire Eyles

This is the only episode I've noticed it on.

Claire Eyles

Love me some Spike and Dru! Also opening shot of the gang, excuse me but Buffy stole my top & Willow stole my hairstyle and choker. God this show is like a nostalgia trip of ghosts from fashions past. :D

Claire Eyles

Spike's accent is meant to be a bit English working class, sort of 'cockneyesque' I guess you could say. The actor being American though, the accent is more of a mix of general British. As someone else pointed out James Marsters did work with Anthony Stewart Head behind the scenes to develop the accent. Tony Head's real life accent is closer to the one Spike is doing, although he sometimes softens it a bit in interviews.

Claire Eyles

Oh, by the way, 'spot the obvious stunt double' is a time honoured tradition in Buffy watching. :D

Gina St Phillips

LOL! Even Supernatural gave us a horrific wig.

Gabe Morales

There are some great behind the scenes videos of James Marsters explaining his accent and Tony Head saying how he worked with him on it I wish I could direct your way. They we were released around the time Buffy went into syndication so it does contain spoilers so we’ll have to hold off on those lol

Found this in Wikipedia: The Region 2 and 4 DVDs play the episodes at 4% faster than the Region 1 DVDs. This reduces the running time of each episode by about two minutes (not counting the "scenes from previous episodes"). It also causes the sound to be raised by two-thirds of a semitone. For example, a C note is raised to a note two-thirds of the way from C to C♯. The speeds of the different region DVDs match the speeds used during the original television broadcasts in the respective countries. Thus the Region 1 DVD plays the video at the same speed as the American broadcasts (which is the speed at which the show was filmed), while the Region 2 and 4 DVDs plays the video at the slightly faster speed that was used during the original British broadcasts. This effect is not particular to the Buffy DVDs but affects all television shows, because film that uses 23.976 frames per second is sped up for PAL that uses 25 (in the 30fps NTSC standard it is subject to 3:2 pulldown and there is no speed variation). But since the signal from a DVD player is ultimately analog, the Region 2 and 4 DVDs will still play at the faster speed when played on an American television with a multi-region DVD.

Jim Greer

Loved your reaction to this episode. The arrival of Spike & Dru really ramps things up to another level .

Merkavar

so are you two really noticing 24 sped up to 25 frames? Also are we assuming these episode are from a DVD? personally I have buffy on itunes as I dont have anything that even plays dvds any more.

Merkavar

Is buffy available on bluray?

Merkavar

I dont really get how they got away with it, it is way too obvious.

Darrell Palmer

The speed difference is noticeable, especially during the theme music and many scenes where an actor raises the pitch of their voice it goes WAY up and sounds unnatural.

Claire Eyles

Hence the time honoured tradition. :D

Really enjoyed this episode a lot it's cool you get to see spike and dru who is totally bonkers and total cray cray but the way she speaks I kinda love her lol, I'm sure you're going to enjoy this show more and more as we go on and I'm here for it 😛 more subdued chair dance this time you misplace your air brumsticks already or has grayson borrowed them 😀 cheers as always for the fun dak and have a cracking weekend

Josee (Griffe)

Fun episode and delightful reaction! Spike and Drucilla are very interesting, the antagonism between Xander and Angel peaked at an othe level, but what shocked me the most was the principal and the policemen talking like they know more then anyone else about what is really going on in Sunnydale... Are they bad guys? Or good (ok, let's neutral) guys trying to keeps the hellmouth madness under some kind of control?

Venice Bitch

Spike!!!!!!! He’s so cool. My fave ep hands down. Really loved the interaction with Buffy and her mom

Corey

You don't recognize him but Spike was on an episode of Supernatural but like 12 years after this. It's the same episode Cordelia is in and they play a married couple. Not sure if you've made that connection yet. There are so many Supernatural episodes lol

Dave Ford

Great episode - but I'm feeling you may have missed the importance of Snyder's last scene with the policeman.. Snyder knows _exactly_ what attacked the school.

The Ginger Historian

Yeah, there's a lot of asking questions directly over dialogue that would explain it. I feel like a format that included pausing would be more beneficial if the plan is to talk this much.

DakaraJayne

I’ve watched the scene while editing Dave thanks for the polite comment though :) Tommy, I will try pausing more but from doing this in the past I realised it does bring me out of the episode a little and the general flow of the reaction.
