Hello Buffy Fans! (Is there a name for the fandom?)

So this episode is officially the kookiest one yet from this show! I was so confused through 80% of my time watching haha. Seeing the world through  Xander's eyes was quite the experience haha! I did feel for him when he wasn't being involved & Cordelia was saying some hurtful things. Xander did however get laid soooo his day turned around hahaha. I would have liked to have known what the huge threat was that almost wiped them out for good but I get that, that is the point too. So much goes on that people are unaware of when the team are fighting on a daily basis. It's a thankless job apparently lol. So many funny moments in this one though, really enjoyable.

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support, you're all amazing!

Much love & stay safe out there!

Dakara x

I love this so much.

I don't think there's anything random about that being Xander's first time to have sex. Actually, since there's been no indication otherwise, it makes total sense.

Todd Bolton

Good question. Anyone with any cultural knowledge, or cable tv, would but I don't know what the demographics were for the show. (Personally I didn't start watching it until a few years after it was over, and I was 50 years old - so I'm no test case.)

Todd Bolton

The show is making fun of itself. The constant references to the end of the world, Giles talking to the spirit guides, the over-the-top battle with the hell mouth creatures, and especially when the music swells with Buffy and Angel’s romantic, end-of-the-world encounter – and then goes silent when Xander appeared – only to pick right back up when he left. We are not supposed to take any of that seriously. The funniest line to me is when Buffy tells Giles that what he did was the bravest thing she’s ever seen. We don’t care what he did, nor should we. The episode was about Xander. It was a deconstruction of its normal narrative. Brilliant comedy with only one serious point – as you said, we all have our own battles going on during the crisis-of-the-week. And I love that Buffy and Angel’s music swelling – then going silent – and then *not swelling* (just picking back up where it left off, just as they did) points to how we’ve been misled by the music this season. Romantic music when Giles and Joyce kiss on the cop car; romantic music when Willow and Xander betray Oz and Cordy (a lot of reactors think that means we’re supposed to “ship” them. Nope, the writers are no more pro Xillow – or Wander? – than we are).

Yummy! Now I want Eton mess.

This is one of those episodes I missed on my first watch of Buffy - back in the day when if you missed an episode on TV you missed it... so it wasn't until I bought the DVDs that I saw this episode! It is a concept episode like Supernatural do. I wasn't a fan of this episode before, but rewatching it I love the transitions between the Xander and Buffy gang. I also got a bit frustrated about the Buffy plot line, but I like this episode now as it's very well directed - in terms of not sticking to traditional story telling. my favourite SPN episodes are the 'concept' episodes.

The xander centric episodes always are entertaining. His character is not always likable but he does serve a purpose in the gang. What i took from this episode is xander role has always been protecting the protectors. His first important role was cpr on buffy that brought her back to life to kill the master. He is very protective of willow and gets very upset when she was hurt in the finale of season 2. He is the one who helps them in anyway he can. Taking care of heroes so they can save the world. Being the humor the comic relief. He faces death everyday with no powers or knowledge just himself. He cares more about them then his own wellbeing. The guy said the difference between them is fear. xander shows fear constantly but he still fights and that makes him a hero as well.

I've always loved this episode, I like when shows can poke fun of themselves a bit (Supernatural? *ahem*). It's a divisive one though - love it or hate it. Some reactors get it early on and love it, others rank it worst of the season. It's obviously shown through Xanders eyes, and so the drama is turned up to 11. He thinks Bangel is super dramatic. Which it is, and the show kinda acknowledges that. I think there are lots of people who don't quite know what to think on a first viewing, but enjoy it for what it is on a second viewing. It's perhaps more enjoyable if you know it's a monster of the week from the getgo.

This is a hilarious episode. I love how the end of the world is just a subplot this episode. On the flipside I don't like how they treat Xander here. Sure he's helpless and gets into trouble quite a bit, but then theres also the moments he saves the day. And even though Buffy & co saved the world here. Xander saved them. Cause if Xander wasn't there, they would have saved the world only to be blown up by the "cake". Overall this is a good episode though that showcases the hardships Xander has at times, with him the only one that doesn't have a "special power or knowledge". Though to be fair, Xander's special power is something else, which they need more than they know. He's the witty remarks, the unexpected voice of observation.

As others have said, I have grown to appreciate this episode over the years. To me, Xander is actually the bravest of the group- no special powers or anything but he's usually the first one to jump in to help. So I always have a soft spot for him. I love how self-aware they are in this episode as well!

That’s Not Acting

I loved this episode for, the start. I’ve always been a fan of Xander the character and have found myself defending him in many conversations over the years. These little Xander-centric episodes always make me smile. We’ve gotten them since season one in varying degrees (Teacher’s Pet; Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered; and now this) and I’m always here for it. Also, I’m glad you’re feeling better.

Tim Pierce

You could almost say he's the heart.

Steve Quast

"I hope you used protection." The best protection when having sex with a vampire slayer is not to piss her off.

Dutchkel

You are correct we are following Xander's perspective this episode. It does feel a bit frustrating that we also, along with Xander, are left out of the main group. We are following the B storyline. It is disorienting at first. But Xander saved his friends. As he does and he is ok knowing he did so with no help and nobody knows he did it. Fun ep. I noticed because you had the subtitles in they said Xander was 'headed' to the school right after he beheaded that gangster lol. Never caught that before. Also, seeing how dramatic Buffy & Angel's relationship seems out of context was hilarious.

Mycatisajoker

Dakara, the guy you mistook for the Frankenstein monster is Michael Cudlitz who played Abraham from the Walking Dead. That maybe why you recognized him…

Xander is far from my favorite character, but gosh darn it, he gets some of the absolute best one-off character episodes. I love this episode so much. I feel like the "sub-plot" about an apocalypse is the show poking fun at and parodying itself. The little Bangel scene, for example, is completely over the top. How many times have we seen basically that exact scene before? XD and the way the music cuts in and out is just *chef's kiss* Xander has found his "cool," or maybe just a renewed self-confidence, which is all cool really is anyway. And he doesn't have to tell the rest of the gang what he did, or have the perfect comeback for Cordelia. It's a wonderful moment of growth.

Denni Caid

Re: Giles and Buffy's relationship... I'm guessing that his getting fired from the Watcher's Council because he loves her like a daughter probably went a long way to helping her forgive him.

GenU

Yeah. The Bangel scene where the music stops the second Xander comes in and starts back up when he leaves is hilarious. It shows the writers are well aware it's all over the top.

Collinson

I think this episode can be a little confusing on a first watch it benefits from a second viewing later on. It’s basically a writing exercise where they swap the A and B story then ramp up the drama to make fun of themselves. I love it now and appreciate it a lot more than my first watch.

Jim Greer

Xander - is it hard to play the guitar . Oz- not the way I play it .

cruzinbosco

I LOVE that you understand the character of Xander and truly appreciate him. So many viewers don't like him or think he's not important and it hurts my heart because, in some ways, he's the most important. You got me teary-eyed when you were talking about him at the end. ❤️

Blain H Granado

A masterpiece of madcap self-parody and Xander psychology. I love this episode if you can’t tell lol

PongPong31

Not a Superman fan I see 😅

The third time Xander has saved the world.

Josee (Griffe)

I always loved Xander, and this episode is superb. A little all over the place, but easy to follow for me. I like that Xander found some self-worth and confidence in himself, enough to not have to tell what happened to his friends. But at the same time, for the first time, I realized he was ready to die. Not in a gut reaction "I have to save my friends" way. Not in a "I don't know how to desarm a bomb but I'll take my chances" way, which would have been closer to his regular reaction when trying to save or help his friends. He said 'I like the quiet' almost as if he had givin' up on life. As if he was not so much looking for a cool factor, but for purpose. Helping his friends is kind of his purpose. It could be braiding one of the girls hair, or getting jelly donuts, or dying to protect them, there is not a big difference for him, as long as he feels needed.

neonblackdirtinthegarden

This is such an oddball episode, but I love it. It's basically BtVS parodying itself. The super-dramatic "end of the world" stuff is made to seem incredibly important, but we only see it in little bits and pieces, cut between the goofy scenes of dead frat boys. Essentially, it's the standard formula of a Buffy episode, with a "main plot" and a "B plot", but in this one they flip the script and give the "B plot" the main focus. It is a great opportunity for the show to take itself less seriously, poke fun at the typical storylines it uses, and tell a story from a different perspective. The emotional conversation between Buffy and Angel in particular is comedy gold. Your comparison to Supernatural's one-per-season "weird" episodes is quite accurate, actually. This almost feels like it could be a trickster episode. Not quite as extreme, but it has the same idea of flipping the show's usual storytelling method on its head. And then of course we get some interesting character development for Xander, which is nice. Overall it's a very one-of-a-kind episode but I think it achieved what it set out for quite well. Watching the next one straight after this, can't wait!

Merkavar

yeah that's my understanding, he betrayed her but regretted it enough that he lost his job and put himself in danger to save her

Ian

I think Dakengar might be my new fav Pokémon 😃 this episode was a bit all over the place like an Eton mess all sorts in it but it's good 🙂 how the ek did Oz even get out of that solid strong cage but great timing on his part 😅 fun episode and fun reaction love the omg moment when guy no longer hangs off the door ouchy lol

ADDButterfly

This episode is always a favorite. It just shows that Xander is in it to do the right thing, and do everything he can to save people. He doesn't have the urge to brag or bring attention to himself, because he knows when he does the right thing. I would not have enjoyed the Buffy and Angel side of the episode, because it would be boring. Xander keeps it fresh, funny, and entertaining to watch. He may not have saved the world, but he saved everyone in the school from that bomb. I always had a theory about this episode. What if the boiler room was under the Library? So if they killed the demon, but Xander wasn't there, they would have all died from the explosion. So thank god Xander was around, going through his crazy life.

Venice Bitch

Not a fan of this episode at all. It had some funny elements in it like Cordy, Xander getting doughnuts because it’s the only thing he can do and also the Hellmouth/fighting stuff was nice however the fact that it’s a Xander centric ep makes it really hard for me to like it. Just don’t like him.

Jon Dub

This. I just cannot fathom fans of the show who really hate Xander. He is such an integral part of the show and the Scooby dynamic, seems odd to me.

Hollywood Outsider

I saw this episode back when Netflix would mail DVDs (before streaming). It's one of those episodes where I had to pick up the DVD sleeve and double check that I wasn't watching the series in the wrong order.

PaulC

I wonder how many viewers got the "Zeppo" reference back in the day? Is that something a typical high-schooler would have known about, or is it more of a cultural thing?
